One GIANT Bass Solo?! Bass Teacher REACTS to 88 Fingers Louie - "100 PROOF"

➡️ No matter what video I post lately, it's guaranteed that there will be requests for "100 Proof" by 88 Fingers Louie in the comments. Bassist Joe Principe absolutely monopolizes this song, and I think it's actually one long bass solo disguised as an epic punk rock song. Right out of the gate, I was hit with a monstrous, high-fidelity bass tone packed with precision and clarity. The bass intro IS the main song structure, and everyone else gets in line behind it all the way until the very end. While the chord progression and the syncopated rhythms rarely change, the way the guitar and bass chords intertwine touch on some clever chord inversions and give the progression a bit of tension under the hood. I discuss Joe's chordal approach using an open-string "pedal" tone, his crisp bass tone, how he completely controls the tonality of the chord by changing the root notes on the fly, and more. Honestly, the actual "bass solo" was the most normal bass line of the song 😅👏🏼

Come back to The Fest!
You know I think I’m realizing why I luv these so much. Punk always tends to get ignored by the more musically trained, you’re honestly the first I’ve seen to really delve deep and give commentary on this genre, from the perspective of someone with a sharply trained ear and a wealth of knowledge on music theory. It’s nice to have my favourite genre finally recognized and examined closer in such a way, and with someone expressing such clear joy in the music to boot! It’s very educational as well, helps the learning process greatly when you really enjoy the material being used in the lesson…but music teachers don’t listen to punk, so these are awesome! As a musician playing guitar in multiple bands over the years, these are what I’ve been waiting for, greatly appreciated! Thank you! 🤟😊 Yes, punk rock around the late 80’s really started ramping up the production quality. Thanks to some artists starting their own record labels and really getting into the production side of things, guys like Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion who started Epitaph records, Fat Mike of NOFX who started Fat Wreck Chords, etc. They started at the perfect time, because they caught a wave in the early 90’s when Nirvana got huge, suddenly listeners were looking for the next alternative rock group, there was demand for it, and punk rockers were growing up and finally just getting good at production. Suddenly we have Green Day, Offspring, Rancid, Sublime dominating the charts…now money is finally flowing, so these guys can REALLY get to work on increasing production quality. By the late 90’s, every punk band was sounding super good! Because there were so many good producers and record companies (still underground not major label) backing them. That’s typically referred too as the third wave of punk. First wave was the 70’s bands, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones. Second was the hardcore wave, Black Flag, Dead Kennedy’s, Bad Brains, all grimey and raw with pretty poor production but tons of creativity and charm. But it was gonna be pretty short lived if punk stayed there. Then the third wave kicked off with one album; Bad Religion, Suffer. That became the blueprint for what punk could be, and suddenly punk had new life breathed into it. An explosion of new bands came from that time, one of them being Nirvana, the rest is history. The third wave saved punk rock and solidified it. Most of these bands you’re covering are from the third wave, that’s why they sound so good. That’s when punk really found its chops. To clarify though, I realize Nirvana is a grunge band not a punk band, but they all played in punk bands before forming Nirvana, and that’s the scene they grew up in. But Nirvana kicked down the door for that style of music to flourish, if they hadn’t, I don’t think punk would have had such a resurgence in the 90’s. Fat Mike says that all the time too; Nirvana was single handedly the reason his record label went from a few hundred sales, to millions of sales, making it possible for him to sign and support more bands. Anyway, that’s today’s punk history lesson, thanx again for your vids, really awesome! 🫠 Face to Face sometime soon! Scott Shiflett is a real shredder of a bass player! 🤟 He’s also the older brother of Foo Fighters lead guitar player Chris Shiflett, which is just cool. 😄
I'll keep saying it on every video, but you gotta do Bent But Not Broken by Face To Face. Scott Shiflett is a beast and the bass is constantly moving with 16th note strumming. There is also a video he made of himself playing it so that may be a good one to watch.

Coolest aspect of this tune, thinking back now, is that he somehow played such lead, upper-register parts but kept that lower note pummeling the whole time. It’s really smart writing if he put the riff in D just to make that work.

The whole 88FL album kills. Do NoMeansNo!
I was in punk band in the early 2000s and played a show with Rise Against just after they put out their first album. Our drummer was playing around on the bass when Joe walked into the green room to grab something, John without missing a beat started playing the intro to 100 proof. Joe just stopped what he was doing and looked over with a smile and gave him a nod before walking back out.

Fun Facts: 88 Fingers Louie has a follow up album - “Thank You For Being A Friend” - it’s excellent. The bass player and guitar player went on to form Rise Against. Seriously, when I heard the first five seconds I immediately thought to myself "Wow, this could be some Rise Against intro too.", and when I looked the band members up I noticed why. 😆
Joe still has a handful of tasty basslines in Rise Against. Some of my perosonal favorites would be Long Forgotten Sons or 1000 good intentions. Which one I would suggest you to check out, I don't know and would be curious to see what others think. Honestly, more bassists from the punk scene compared to the other ones made me go "I want to grab a bass and play my ass off". The art of "punk bass" fascinates me.
