One day builds should be a regular feature. Love it
That not only looks really nice but it’s also great that you were so thoughtful to make such a special piece for your cat. I know that the animals in our lives become a real part of the family and are often looked at as sort of a child that you want to take care of just as much as an actual child. I think it’s quite funny that you have your cats food up on top of the dog crate. We have one of those metal wire type dog crates that sits right next a window in our living room and our kitten is all the time laying on top of it or just sitting on top looking out the window lol.
This is wise and caring! Aging cats can develop arthritis, inner ear balance problems, and muscle atrophy. My poor little 17-year old girl can't get on the couch without help. Her brother has intermittent vertigo. The stairs really improve their quality of life in old age.
Jay- what a great build for a simple project. I love seeing the care and attention you give to even something like this. Your “straw” visualization really works for routing “down hill”.
I have a 21 year old cat that needs these. For some reason all my cats live a LONG time. My Maine Coon was 26... That' cat was such a bad ass.
Win win for the cat, win win on that awesome soundtrack! Not something that you typically do, but I sure did enjoy it, very fitting!
I like how the cat is accepting the stairs. I have to do the same since my cat platform is away after a winter storm a few weeks ago. But - it´s outside, and the cats need to climb 3 meters to my balcony to come up from the garden on ground level. Anyway, this solid construction should make it. Although I´m not going to use expensive wood. I guess this can be made from construction wood as well. And you can buy these wooden breakfast boards / planks as steps for little money.
A wood working video that warms the heart! I was hoping to see the cat using the stairs...perfect!
I want to see her use it. What a wonderful man you are. Thank you for your video!
(Looks at oak and walnut cat stair. Looks at own veneer-clad particle board end table.) (Looks again at fine hardwood cat stair. Looks again around own room at cheap RTA pieces.) Dude, your cat's furniture is better than mine!

My thought exactly, Jus. I can't afford to buy that lumber to build projects for my family and Jay uses it for his cat.

@@pteddie6965 it's probably mostly leftover parts from other projects. I doubt he bought the wood just for this, but I'm with you there. I'm mostly using poplar for projects. Occasionally I can use a piece of a maple that I got as some scraps from a tree and dried in my garage over a few years.
What an awesome idea for an aging pet. My dog could've used a set in its last years. Great build.👍
Very cool build Jay. I built our cats 2 sets of stairs so they could get on the bed easier a few years back. Pretty awesome to see our new cats use them also.
Jay that is a wonderful thing to do for your family friend.
Jay, it's clear to see that you are a cat lover, as I am. Your cat is fortunate to have such a caring 'staff', such as you.
Thank you Jay! Our 11 year old cat is exhibiting the same decrease in jumping to countertop height ability. This build adds to my arsenal of ideas to help out our family member Zydeco. P.S. - War Eagle! :-)
My sister had a cat that lived until she was 21. The last few years the cat suffered from arthritis in her hips that made jumping on anything pretty much impossible. This might sound crazy but my sister started getting acupuncture treatments for the cat and the results were nothing short of remarkable! For weeks after each treatment, the cat was like a young cat again. She was jumping and playing. It was incredible. When the effects would wear off, she’d get another treatment. Before that I was a complete skeptic about the efficacy of acupuncture because I thought the treatments “worked” on people due to the placebo effect. However, cats are not susceptible to that phenomenon. It was truly helping her and made her last few years so much better and less painful.

Many old cats live in constant pain; especially arthritis is quite common and needs to be treated. Acupuncture helps many, but so does medication also. Gabapentin and some other drugs are used. Cats are really really good at hiding their pain.

Yes, it does sound crazy. Very crazy. Animals that are suffering need to be put out of their misery. They're not people.
Awww, this is such a sweet thing to do for your kitty! So nice to watch her happily going up and down the stairs. Bless you!
One of the first projects I did when my GF and I moved to MA was build a set of stairs for her 12yo cat to climb into the bed (yeah... the cat sleeps in the bed. I've gotten used to it.). Fun, easy project and certainly gets a lot of use.
Thanks Jay! Any project to make life better for an aging pet is time well spent!!
I like where your heart is J Bates--in so many ways!!
I had made several pet stairs for people years ago but made mine were free standing with two full length and width sides. Looking at this and comparing it to the ones I did, I like your design much more. Does the same thing with much less material and much smaller footprint without sacrificing function.
This video is very instructive in detail which makes it easy to follow along & actually understand what is going on 😊....
So sweet. Happy kitty. :)
Awesome build, love the teaching on what direction you should use your router, the way you described it makes it obvious. It's the little details you go into what makes this channel stand out from the rest. Thank you again
Perfect timing! I just decided this weekend to build one for my cat! Thank you, Jay!
Thank you for doing that, Jay. She deserves it.
Nice build we have to take care of our fur babies
The little dog may soon figure out there's food at the top of those stairs.
it's pretty handy making the stairs 45 degrees so your speed square speeds things up 😋
It will be interesting to see how the stairs work long term. Our cat makes a louder thumping noise descending the stairs than our daughters. Always figured it had something to do with weight to small paw contact area. The build looks great. Best part of woodworking is solving specific problems.
My puppers can climb stairs. Nice stairs.... Now you have slick stairs on a plastic dog crate. I've seen a lot built like furniture around here. Its popular on FB market place. I was going to build a top and sides around my dogs crate so it looks nice, but I can still slide it out and collapse it to travel with them.

The crate was a gift from the owner of Gunners Kennels. It's a fantastic crate with a lot of great features. I don't think I'll build one.
What a great practical project combined with top quality design and build. Love these videos.
Great project, Jay! This is something that I really need to tackle my cell for our dogs. This is a great example of what I need to do. Thanks for sharing. Felix
First off, I loved this quick build. Second, and I' know I'm not alone here. There seems to be this ... thing ... in the woodworking community. "One day build X for cheap $ with hardwood!" projects as the title... Then you get 30 seconds into the video and realize they're building it with $10-20k worth of pro tier or pro-sumer gear in a 900+ sqft workspace with proper power, lighting and ventilation, who has has a source for actual wood on speed-dial (IE, not a box-store) and pumps out something like this masterpiece with it in minutes. Even though I wish to one day, I will most likely never have the space to enjoy a good plainer or table mounted router. I'm just hoping for a solid exhaust fan one day. Heck, I'm still digging the trench to run a proper 60 amp circuit to my garage to start the process. And Third: I think we all need more good-woodworking in our lives. When I watch this, and get sad and envious, I'm reminded of other channels where all the joinery is done by hand. Where everything in the fitting process is done by hand with hand-only tools. Maybe I should tend that way... unless I win the lotto.
Looks like now the dogs are going to have it easier to get to the food! :)
Nice workshop and love the D-town rep, lol. All I pretty much have is a few 2x10s, a circular saw, a drill but nonetheless this video gives me some ideas for my cat ladder. Thanks! 🙂
just beautiful work
That is awesome! And looks so elegant. Was going to make something similar for my dog but, alas the cancer took him faster than expected. Great build!!
Your love for your animals are awesome

More light needs to be shined on love. Too much negativity highlighted these days.
Congratulations from Brazil 👏👏👍
First time seeing your cat, thanks for showing that
Fantastic, thanks so much. I’ve been thinking of building something like it for my cat. Beautiful inspiration! Thank you.
Very nice build. Also, that was the best explanation of uphill and downhill router cuts that I have heard.
Love it. I came here because my two girls are 15, and find it hard to jump off the bed in the dark - I have to turn the light on so they can see the floor. Anyway, I'm going to make mine shorter, but wider steps so they can sit or lie on if they want. Great work.
These are just beautiful! Thanks for sharing your very talented product.
Great Job Bud 👍 And The Cat Is Happy Hey Great Upgrade The Miter Station 🔨📐
What a great cat dad! Thank you.
Great build Jay. We think alike when it comes to stuff we'd do for our animals... - Jim
Genius. Thanks for the vid!
Beautiful build. And thank yoi for the straw explanation - it finally makes sense!
Those are beautiful Jay.
Excellent build. Love it.
Nice thing to do for our pets. Remember David Picciuto made a ramp for his dog some years ago.
Beautiful and brilliant
Mr. Bates, your cat has taught you how to human very well. Nicely done.
Excelente Amigo. Saludos desdé Ciudad Juárez México.
You are so sweet! Thanks for inspiration!
Love this!
Jay very awesome and you did an amazing job teaching them how and which way to go when using the router thumbs up my friend and thank you for loving your pets they are members of our families lol
Looks Great. I'd love something like this for mine.
Nice work young man! Awfully nice what you did for your cat . We have have three of them, good day, William
Cool design Jay, and nice contained pet corner you’ve got going there.
Best job! I did something similar for my cat but was worried about his footing so I put a strip of carpet tile on each step. Yours looks a lot better than mine
Thanks for sharing
Nice!! I was hoping you would show her using it. Fun easy build man. These projects must refreshing from the larger more complicated builds you do.
Beautifully done and very simple to make 😊 I'm sure the cat will love it ! We have three cats and I am thinking making a cat house on the top . Thanks
A bespoke ramp for our non-bespoke feral cat? Unlikely. Nice museum-quality materials and craftsmanship.
Nicely done. I have some free hanging cat boxes i built years ago that are on the walls. Might need to add something like this to make it easier to access as the cats age!
Your dogs need a wooden box now. ;)
OMG you guys have quite the setup there...I love it!! I don't know what half of what you have is even called lol ...my fiance is very good at building things and very creative and that setup would be perfect for him....
Looks great! So good of you to build something to make life easier for your kitty. :-)
Love it!!
Need this rn heavily
Your using nice walnut for the cat stairs!? Must be a very special cat.
There's a lot to like in this video.
You just earned a subscriber because of the drawer pulls. LGRW! :)
Really enjoyed the edit on this one Jay.
One happy cat !
nice design
Sweetness!!
My grandpa is getting to the point where he can't lift his cats up on the counter to eat this vid is exactly what I'm looking for appreciate you👍👍
Wow that deflection in that cutoff @ 1:48...
Looks great. Now you just need to build a nice wooden kennel to match.
Watched on your website but stopping by to give a like!
Great Video! new subscriber, the "vertex" you were talking about is the throat depth.
Jay you’ve come a long way since the apartment workshop days.
Two uploads in one day? I feel spoiled. Great way to spend a Sunday morning.
Nice one
Big fan
Would not take long for my dogs to get this down! Lol Good build!
Nice.
I was wondering about the dados not being centered but it makes sense once you put it up against the wall. Very nice wood combination - that plank of walnut would be a hundred dollars (rough, not S4S) where I live...I understand it is considerably cheaper in other parts of the USA.
JAY THE CAT STEPS CAME OUY GREAT VERY COOL .FROM DOUG
Aha, a cat staircase! Well, if you say so! 🙄😂 And again, you do a better job than 99% of your colleagues here on You-Tube. It is worthwhile to have a look at your channel! Nice work! 👍😎
@1:17... thanks, I wasn't sure what that was! 😁
I made something similar to help our rat terrier get on our bed when he was a puppy as soon as I put it next to the bed he learned to jump from the floor!! Eliminating the need for the steps LOL
Nice project. I have a 17 year old cat with atheriltis. She has trouble getting up on bed. I'm going to make a shorter version of this for bedroom.
Pensando en ellos, es muy tierno 🐶🐱
My stairs are made from plywood. Lucky cat.
Love your attention to detail. How far apart are the steps? Thank you for showing us how.
