That not only looks really nice but it’s also great that you were so thoughtful to make such a special piece for your cat. I know that the animals in our lives become a real part of the family and are often looked at as sort of a child that you want to take care of just as much as an actual child. I think it’s quite funny that you have your cats food up on top of the dog crate. We have one of those metal wire type dog crates that sits right next a window in our living room and our kitten is all the time laying on top of it or just sitting on top looking out the window lol.

This is wise and caring! Aging cats can develop arthritis, inner ear balance problems, and muscle atrophy. My poor little 17-year old girl can't get on the couch without help. Her brother has intermittent vertigo. The stairs really improve their quality of life in old age.

Jay- what a great build for a simple project. I love seeing the care and attention you give to even something like this. Your “straw” visualization really works for routing “down hill”.

I like how the cat is accepting the stairs. I have to do the same since my cat platform is away after a winter storm a few weeks ago. But - it´s outside, and the cats need to climb 3 meters to my balcony to come up from the garden on ground level. Anyway, this solid construction should make it. Although I´m not going to use expensive wood. I guess this can be made from construction wood as well. And you can buy these wooden breakfast boards / planks as steps for little money.

@@pteddie6965 it's probably mostly leftover parts from other projects. I doubt he bought the wood just for this, but I'm with you there. I'm mostly using poplar for projects. Occasionally I can use a piece of a maple that I got as some scraps from a tree and dried in my garage over a few years.

My sister had a cat that lived until she was 21. The last few years the cat suffered from arthritis in her hips that made jumping on anything pretty much impossible. This might sound crazy but my sister started getting acupuncture treatments for the cat and the results were nothing short of remarkable! For weeks after each treatment, the cat was like a young cat again. She was jumping and playing. It was incredible. When the effects would wear off, she’d get another treatment. Before that I was a complete skeptic about the efficacy of acupuncture because I thought the treatments “worked” on people due to the placebo effect. However, cats are not susceptible to that phenomenon. It was truly helping her and made her last few years so much better and less painful.

Many old cats live in constant pain; especially arthritis is quite common and needs to be treated. Acupuncture helps many, but so does medication also. Gabapentin and some other drugs are used. Cats are really really good at hiding their pain.

One of the first projects I did when my GF and I moved to MA was build a set of stairs for her 12yo cat to climb into the bed (yeah... the cat sleeps in the bed. I've gotten used to it.). Fun, easy project and certainly gets a lot of use.

I had made several pet stairs for people years ago but made mine were free standing with two full length and width sides. Looking at this and comparing it to the ones I did, I like your design much more. Does the same thing with much less material and much smaller footprint without sacrificing function.

It will be interesting to see how the stairs work long term. Our cat makes a louder thumping noise descending the stairs than our daughters. Always figured it had something to do with weight to small paw contact area. The build looks great. Best part of woodworking is solving specific problems.

My puppers can climb stairs. Nice stairs.... Now you have slick stairs on a plastic dog crate. I've seen a lot built like furniture around here. Its popular on FB market place. I was going to build a top and sides around my dogs crate so it looks nice, but I can still slide it out and collapse it to travel with them.

First off, I loved this quick build. Second, and I' know I'm not alone here. There seems to be this ... thing ... in the woodworking community. "One day build X for cheap $ with hardwood!" projects as the title... Then you get 30 seconds into the video and realize they're building it with $10-20k worth of pro tier or pro-sumer gear in a 900+ sqft workspace with proper power, lighting and ventilation, who has has a source for actual wood on speed-dial (IE, not a box-store) and pumps out something like this masterpiece with it in minutes. Even though I wish to one day, I will most likely never have the space to enjoy a good plainer or table mounted router. I'm just hoping for a solid exhaust fan one day. Heck, I'm still digging the trench to run a proper 60 amp circuit to my garage to start the process. And Third: I think we all need more good-woodworking in our lives. When I watch this, and get sad and envious, I'm reminded of other channels where all the joinery is done by hand. Where everything in the fitting process is done by hand with hand-only tools. Maybe I should tend that way... unless I win the lotto.
