One Column Two Effective Length : Assign Lx and Ly
One of the most confusing concept in steel design is the assignment of effective length/factor about different axis of the column.
In this video let's learn about-
Major axis and minor axis of column,
Slenderness ratio of column,
how to design steel column,
effective length of column about major axis,
effective length of column about minor axis,
how to assign effective length factor in staad model,
concept of lx and ly in steel design,

hat's off to you, never saw such series of videos with practical example, keep making such videos for staad also with real life example pictures.

Sir, Your videos very much helpful. Can you please explain the Lx, Ly and Lz parameter for rafter and which parameter should assign for which member of structure.

hello sir, Ly and Lz parameters are only for column? or we need to define these values also in beam. Please explain.

Could you please make a complete detailed video about the releases given in staad pro considering different type of structures

It's really tedious..
also you have modeled purlins also....is it mendatory to model purlins or can we simulate the effect of purlin by just assigning the value of Ly to rafter members?
@TonmoyMaity

No never.. don't model it..just adjust the ly
Thanks for sharing! your VDO is very helpful for young Engineer like me, if you can make the example of steel frame column design with Autodesk Robot is good.

Great suggestion!
Now also column height is full height only if want to divide by 2 u should connect bracing at strut location.so then only from strut location bracing will transfer the load to foundation.if u dont provide bracing column will bend between foundation and eave joint only.
Excellent

If the main frame is moment connected then why have you taken the effective length as L it should be 0.65L as for moment connected frame the column is fixed on both side. And for longitudinal direction, column is pin connected so effective length is L

One time
the lx and ly parameters are with respect to local axis of crossection , not on global axis . Please check I think there is an error in your presentation . Following staaadpro conventions , Z is local axis and is major axis Y is local minor axis X is axis along length Lz is used for buckling length for major axis Ly is used for buckling length about y axis Lx is buckling length for torsional buckling case . Usually ly and lx are same value in cases like for example the column braced by a strut in middle . But again this need not be 100 percent to true , depends on the crossection of strut and connection of strut to web of column .
