****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Tuesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.Today we are giving an update on our Jersey cow, Hope, and her new calf along with other lessons we have learned on the farm this summer.

As soon as he smells like her from drinking her milk & pooping it out she will take to him easier also if you take a towel and catch some of Henry's pee & rub it on the new calf it will help fool her into thinking he is Henry nursing

I was holding my breath every time the new calf approached Hope! It melted my heart to see her looking after Henry, but even more to see her allow the new baby to nurse. What a good mama she is!

I'm not surprised that you bought a 2nd calf to put on Hope, but I thought that you might buy a heifer to start to 'grow your herd'. I used to put an extra calf on my cows and raise them for veal. My experience was that less than 50% of cows will accept a calf that isn't hers if her calf is still nursing. That makes Hope special! As the calves grow, however, you will need to watch that Henry doesn't crowd the smaller one out. My wife and I are retired and the grandsons have the farm now, so please keep us posted! We relive our younger days twice a week through your blog!

Great animal husbandry! Mamma cow "Hope" seems content with having another baby around, to help drink her plentiful bounty of milk. The pain sometimes of two sucklings is a nuisance to a milk cow, and can be painful. She seems to be taking to it very well. Good for you two.

You guys have to know that this was the cutest video ever to wake up to!! I said OH HOW CUTE outloud when you showed the calf in the trailer. I live alone, so I guess I was hoping you would hear it through the television. LOL I live in Illinois and I absolutely love cows. You must show us more, they are adorable playing together. Also, Henry looks so healthy!! This new calf definitely needs some fattening up. Take care and have a blessed day.

Good luck little calf, you might let him nurse before you milk in the evening. That way he’ll smell like her sooner! God bless you guys!

I added them to the hurde I gave each mom a calf and the cow that didn't accept the calf I would put the calf behind the mom once it stands up because that's when they usually poops and I rub the poop over the calf whether it's #1 or #2 and that does the trick. When the mom smells the calf she will let it nurse

Kevin and Sarah, just a thought... If you Rub Mama's and her own calfs scent onto other calf right away... Before she even gets an idea that new calf is not get own.... It goes really well, usually for all involved! We did this on many beef cattle ranches which is a bit different than dairy cattle, but I've had NURSERY dairy cows take several calves, worked with this method over the years! Named one cow "Nursery Rhyme" because of how much she loved her four babies every year, always mooing to them Softly! Love your farms, your videos and content and your heart for the Lord and sharing with all of us! One of my Favorites channels for sure! Deb

I've seen moms do this. Usually once he smells like Henry and herself, starts to pass stool from her milk, and she hears him crying to be fed, she'll let him nurse. The bond may never be as strong as it is with her own. She may wean the new calf before her own, but it will be a acceptable time for it. I'm surprised you didn't get a female. Maybe next time as Hope is still young. Dairies are known to have a calf whose mother died or rejected her calf and don't have the time to bottle feed them. Henry will enjoy a playmate!

We wait all week to watch to see what is happening on your homestead. So glad things are improving. I have taken some of your suggestions on gardening here in Texas and so far my fall garden is improving. I am always so motivated by watching what you all are doing you on your farm. Thank you and God Bless.

How about Harry for the name for the new calf? Henry, Harry & Hope? The 3H ranch? Just loved this video and thanks for not leaving us hanging between the days and including it all in one video! I can’t wait to watch many more videos with the cows playing together and Hope being as loving to the new calf as she has been with Henry. The new calf is so timid and sweet and when Henry and him were nuzzling together it was just the sweetest thing! I’m sure Hope will be loving on him in no time too! God bless you all and wishing you success with your new little addition. 🙏🏻🇨🇦🥰

G’day Kevin Sarah & Co ;-) Congratulations absolutely beautiful new calf, & pair. An old fail safe is to rub the cows manure on to the surrogate calf, this gives the cows bio load to the surrogate, and encourages the mothering instincts to clean & nurture potentially believing its her own. Works with many different critters too. Another way is to tether the cow, allowing the calf (s) to nurse. The calf’s may also need to be drenched within the next six weeks, always followed directly by a paddock rotation. The chooks are doing a marvellous job cleaning up the patties, you shouldn’t have too many fly issues. Well done it’s a credit to you both and family. With many source blessings with truth love light laughter happiness joy fun play creativity adventures and may peace be with you all! Victoria Australia xoxo

Hi there. I'm not understanding your comment about the calves maybe needing drenched. With what and why? Is it something you do routinely in your herd? I've been around cattle for years, but am not familiar with this. Just curious.

Fascinating dynamic between Hope and the new calf, Hank? 😁 How Hope is making sure that Henry is fine. How the 2 calves were interacting. How Hope went to the milking stand. Where is the new calf's mum? Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend 👋🍂🍁🤗🌻

They got him from a dairy farm. His mom is a dairy cow, she's still at the farm, they breed for the milk production. Dairy farms keep the girl calves and have to get rid of all the boy claves.

Cute🥰 please fix animals always in the trailer, they do funny things. Yes, the drinking from backside seems to be quite normal for foster siblings. I've seen a report about on TV. Most important seems to be a cow with good mother feelings.

You don't tie calves in a trailer. That's asking for a disaster, especially if they're not trained to stand tied.

@@lmd2454 ok. My collegue didn't tie a cow, she jumped forwards on the iron girder of the trailer. And the owner could be hurt while opening, but ok, not by a so tiny calf.
