I remember as a young teenager back in the mid sixties l would always try & get a window seat near so l could see the Pratt & Whitney JT8-D’s on Douglas DC9’s & Boeing 727’s when l would take off from Essendon Airport in Melbourne before Tullamarine opened on my way to Perth when in those days there wasn’t a direct flight to Western Australia because l think as Essendon runway was too short for the then new jets to take off with a full fuel load to get there hence there was always a change of planes @ Adelaide, anyway the JT8-D’s were much louder & had a far better sound than the newer jobs, back in the better days when the wonderful new Boeing’s & Douglas jetliners were a real adventure to travel on after the DC-6’s & viscounts, it may now be in the name of Progress but it is just not the same & never will be.

All transport gets more sterile and computerised as time goes on with a hand full of exceptions. Sydney's new Alstom light rail vehicles to Randwick and Kingsford sound pretty interesting.

A great flight on a perfect day with amazing scenery including the ascent from Hobart and descent into Sydney. Scintillating spooling up sound of engines on departure. Interesting commentary on the history of this initially unpopular plane to one now highly sought after by QANTAS and others. The joys of flying!

My first flight was around 1983 in a TWA MD81 from Philadelphia to Chicago on business. When we were cleared for takeoff, the pilot “hit the gas” and I was pressed into my seat like never before. I turned to my colleague and said something like, wow, that’s some acceleration. Soon after, we were in the air and I was having a cheese omelette for breakfast.

Great ‘little’ aircraft with a heritage stretching way back to the DC9 of the early ‘60s-and wow you get a good perspective on just how low that wing is to the ground on landing!

Awesome video Paul, really clear footage out the window. The 717 is my favourite Qantas domestic plane, I've flown half a dozen 717's this year including only a few weeks ago. I remember one flight from last year from Hobart to Sydney as you flew, the pilots accelerated their 717 hard we were really pushed back into our seats - I loved that! Keep up the good work mate.

My first jet type rating was on the B-717 at AirTran Airways. The airframe is absolutely rock solid, but the engines and avionics had some initial "teething issues" which needed to be sorted out. By the time they went off to Big D all the kinks had been worked out and they were very reliable. Great short to medium range aircraft.

I have fond memories of Qantas-Link, using it to travel about Australia's interior a few years back. Especially tho', our B-717 ride, where we were, at first fearfully, seated almost opposite your view. From my experience of DC-9'ers, Mad-Dogs (80's AND 90's), and then the 717, the FIRST thing noticed was how MUCH less noisy those BIG (in comparison with previous engine selections) turbofans were. Given those earlier - MANY years ago - rides, Q-Link's 717's are a vast difference. Still handle like a flying sports car, I am also happy to recall. We were flying/travelling during a period when State elections were being (LITERALLY!!) fought, and yet the everyone we met; aircrews, bus drivers, and hotel staffs, on every segment of our 21-day odyssey were wonderful. LONGING to return. AND, fly "the Link"!!

Great video! In a world where all new aircraft have the same 2 engine under the wing design, it’s great to be able to fly on something different. I’ve always thought the rear engined jets look far more elegant. Flown on many, but not for years now. What a strangely enjoyable and interesting video! Now I have something I can send to friends and family all over the world, so they can see what Hobart airport looks like. I always thought that one off the coolest things at Hobart was that they did not waste time with 'push back', but just revved up one of the engines and turned around. I hope that has not been changed for all aircraft, from now on.

@@PaulStewartAviation For almost a decade Hobart had been my 'home airport' (now it is the nifty Launceston Airport, which you should come to visit some time). Before Hobart, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson had been 'my airport' for a decade. What a stark contrast! Sometimes, in Hobart, I would be home within half an hour after the plane had landed, whereas at ATL it would sometimes take that long just to get off the plane! At least in Hobart a friendly little dog comes to say 'hello' (unless you have fruit or vegetables with you, in which case you are in deep trouble!).

Aloha from Hawai'i! I was surprised to see that Qantas uses B717s because they're rare. I've heard that Hawaiian Airlines has the largest number of 717s of any other airline, used on its interisland routes. Although not especially comfortable, these planes are perfect for HAL's island hops which normally are only 25 - 40 minutes long. I'm happy to see a new post from you.

Enjoyed the video. Loved seeing the clouds draw level with the plane during decent and realising how low some are. I noticed the aircraft fly through a darker grey cloud. I presume they are far denser than the white cotton wool variety. That plane does look un-Boeing and the McDonnell Douglas origins explains it. I heard BMW did make aeroplane engines a long time ago but never knew they dabbled in Jet engines these days.
