THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF.... "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR" It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person. I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats, and of course I got rid off the stinky nest, lol!!! Then I assembled everything back together and... bingo it's runing like a champion!!! For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel). Just picture this: (Any gasoline engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed. Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover because you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding, lol!!! After testing the gen with the help of a gasoline container, a piece of hose and 12v battery, I did put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover, then it was ready to be installed at my RV. Once the gen was installed back at my motorhome I started it to be tested for 120v electricity but not before flipping the AC circuit switch (on) at the gen starting control panel (sometimes hiding under or around the panel) to be able to transfer power to my RV GFCI main outlet and electric panel as well, my motorhome it's equipped with GFCI so I reset it and tested for green led light indicating power is ready at my main breakers panel, so I turned my main breaker (on) along the others ones but no power was present at my breaker main switch (faulty main braker) so I flipped it many times, sometimes you can make it work again, mine did work, lol!!! I'm happy because everything works now including the refrigerator for cold drinks and AC for this crazy summer, lol! Later I'll buy me a new main braker, for now this is a resurrected generator story that needed to be shared. If this can help eaven one person to save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading.

Had the same problem with the same gen a few years ago. It would run as long as you hold the star button down, but would die when you let off. Replaced the control board did the trick..

If I am not mistaken I believe Onan makes glides for your unit so it can slide out. You can also use aftermarket drawer glides with a 300-500lb rating as the genset weighs in at 262lbs. to save some money over the Onan branded glides. Obviously you will need to make a cutout in the body to accommodate the muffler or an adjustment to the exhaust alignment for fit. The cutout could be incorporated into the generator cover door to restore the finished appearance. On mine the coach has no provision to slide out like yours. As Onan lists it, It is a thru the floor mount which sucks a big one. The only really safe way to get mine out is to use a transmission jack under it. Without a transmission jack it is dropped to the ground in 2 steps and God help your trying to get it back in. Previously was your starter sluggish when you tried to start it? If so, that is the same problem I have with mine. I see the cost of a new starter is about $30 +shipping.

Sir, I would simply shoot a couple blasts of starter fluid in that carburetor - to see if it fires up on that first. It seems like it wants to run but not enough fuel to do it with. Short starts of 1/2 seconds it not helping it..you need to hold that button for a full second or two to help get fuel pump to prime. If the generator runs after you squirt stater fluid..then quits...most likely it's simply your carburetor is gummed up with bad gas. drain the float bowel and clean it up...see if that works. Good luck.

Did you ever try to start it with no load at all, literally all breakers turned off, and even the internal breakers it has?? It could have been doing that due to a bad transfer switch in the coach not fully transferring the load... You would also hear some nasty sounds inside at the circuit box/load center.... Also did you end up changing one or both spark plugs on the Gen?

Not that this is a right answer but I had a start/run/kill switch for my generator on my dash that was bad. I would press the start and it would always die after I let off it. I replaced the switch and it all good now. Good luck to you..

That was pretty good to bypass a fuse with a heavy wire if something was shorted it was to burn that was the burnout quick then

I must have gotten out of sequence, what happened after you cleaned the carb, The next video came up was replacing the starter, it seemed like it was starting fine but it was the gas and air mixture which needing adjusting. and now I see removing the generator, aaaa you about to do a service overhaul.

Went through an issue with a generator like this on my dads RV. It would run for about 20 minutes then shut down. Upon restart it would run for about a minute then shutdown. That expensive part you pointed out was what I determined to be bad (Its the regulator...its $300 to replace) I sold the whole generator as-is for 20$ and purchased a 3700w open frame portable generator which I am currently in the process of installing. That whole new generator was about $400, which made more sense to my then throwing $300 at our old dinosaur of a generator. Never mind if that regulator didn't fix the problem... we really would have been SOL.

Yeah, ours only had 500 hours on it too... Shame. I even tried to put a universal regulator in as a last resort to try and get it going again, and even that wouldn't work because how this generator is engineered...its backwards from any other generator out there. You NEED to use the expensive "Onan" parts, which ofcourse are an arm and a leg. Done with all that.... Its got a cheap Chinese generator now, for which parts are a dime a dozen and plentiful lol

So you traded a well established 6.5KW Cummings generator that is specifically designed and engineered to safely run in an enclosed compartment on 110 degree days for a portable open frame contractors generator with only half the wattage. You better hope it doesn't burn down your coach because your insurance wont cover it.

It is the solenoid that sends current to the starter. The cable that goes to the starter comes off of it. The cable you see on it comes from the battery.

It won’t move, nothing will happen. Or it’ll be insanely weak. Some of these Onan generators use the stator to start the engine & to work as both. But since it’s a twin cylinder flat head these things are gas hogs, that’s why these things are all over Facebook from motor homes.

Onan generators are made by Cummings, they are commercial Duty generators and are some of the most reliable generators built. They are regularly use in commercial emergency power backup systems. Honda makes nice little generators but they are only consumer-grade products and are no comparison Onan commercial grade offerings.
