    The amount of quality academic content on KZread has been slowly growing for years now. Esoterica is one channel that stands out to me in particular. The quality of scholarship in their videos is simply outstanding. But they're far from an isolated example. Despite all the trash, the internet is also providing a phenomenal venue for the creation and dissemination of valuable knowledge. (Also, I can't think of a more timely subject than the social problem of communication in the present world.)

(As a fellow academic, I also really applaud your branching out into video instead of focussing only on academic papers. Keep up the important and good work! :) )

    I don't think the love of the monstrous and Simon and Garfunkel are that distantly related. Maybe I'm coming from an angle more sympathetic to the monstrous (my work often revolves around horror and monstrosity as an expression of alienation and beauty) but I always found Simon and Garfunkel living in the same space in my brain as The Haunting of Hill House. There's so much melancholy and regret, and the idea of the social isolation inherent to a kind of artistic madness, or maybe I just play Simon and Garfunkel in the fall when Halloween is happening and my brain crossed the streams. I don't know why THIS is what stuck out to me in this video but my mind is a clown car and I am not driving so

    No wonder your channel is so cool. I love monsters, too - not horror usually, because horror is usually about grotesque brutality, but monsters, for the idea of finding something beyond what we know and as an allegory for facing and hopefully overcoming our demons. I also love the spiritual, which of course has the same story.

    As someone coming from academia (especially focusing on horror cinema) I also think KZread is the best way forward to make tangible differences that aren't necessarily felt in the same way as publishing papers due to the inaccessibility of academia (broadly speaking) to the general public. I can respect anyone who wants to share their work through KZread and also have felt the same sort of disapproval general academia has on anything connecting itself to social media, which I also think is a shame. As someone with a very similar channel to yours (We both study and write on horror, but you focus on the notion of the 'monster' more than I do) I can feel the same sort of 'genre fatigue' that comes with anything you had an interest in but aren't necessarily ready to fully commit your whole life to, lol. I'll keep watching your stuff though and wish you luck exploring new things! :)

    I foresee a future where universities allocate funding for public academia through widely accessible platforms like this. Research findings take years and years to actually be accepted by society at large, and then almost always only when it can be co-opted by a corporation. Of course, KZread is the corporation profiting off channels like ours, but I think participating in that system is better than having a vacuum that just gets filled by people who sound "intellectual" but actually have no idea what they're talking about. Glad you're here!

    I nearly avoided this video because I couldn't think of a film called On This Zoo or one that had your bird in it lol. I'm glad you've been doing new things and have enjoyed the whole range of topics you have covered, it was the Slipkont album sounding Daily Wire Cinematic Universe video that the algorithm threw at me for whatever that says. Your approach to subjects, and every other part of your videos, and your perspective is what I stayed for. The fact that I love monsters and horror is a bonus. The world is indeed scary enough without having to ruminate on dark ideas, particularly for the neurospicy of us. It rather undercuts the reason we are drawn to horror and the joy we find in it. However, you dissect a frog monster, your still left with a dead frog monster that may well have left bleak beady eggs in your brain. I don't think anyone would want to limit you at all or have unreasonable expectations, especially with the effect it can have. I do fear that human communication is not necessarily sunshine and rainbows itself, but it is increasingly something that is being shaped without understand and education, so it's certainly an important subject. Have you considered doing audio recordings of your papers or having those capable and willing do so? I'm sure people would be intrigued to read/ listen to them. I know I would be, but struggle with reading academic text. Just a thought. Wishing you the best in all endeavours!

    I used to say academia was intellectual anemia, all talk no action, conceptualization rather than realization. Now I just don't think much about it at all, but that's not from a stance, just the inevitable isolation that the Ivory Tower (that I long ago departed) tends toward. I'm sure your papers are excellent- wrote quite a lot myself that simply got a grade as their crescendo- but I never would've found your genuinely cultured and insightful perspective other than through the decidedly not-academic medium of YT. I mean, so what if I do, but still, you've got maybe the most original take on the topics you select- and are so very articulate and perhaps just honest- that I'm just glad you put yourself "out there" for this. Best channel on YT IMO... but MO is usually rejected, so...

    @@themorbidzoo Oh also, based on what you're saying about covering media and communication on the channel as well as monsters I would recommend that you check out a book called House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski for a video topic. Because on one hand its kind of a horror story, but its also kind of a highly postmodern and experimental examination on how we communicate through stories, so it sounds right up your alley.

    I know this kinda doesn't fit on this channel but you've become one of my favorite content creators on KZread so I need to ask you... is there a possibility that you have read Stormlight archive by Brandon sanderson? I'm really conflicted with this series - specially the second one, on the views on privilege and class system this book presents and I think this channel - even not being about high fantasy stuffs - it's maybe the best place to analyze this.

    I find it ironic that academics in film criticism would look down upon KZread criticism, since the biggest problem with KZread movie criticism is that it becomes an unquestioning circle-jerk of unquestioned assumptions (CGI is bad, ambiguity is a plot hole, etc.), which is a problem that only gets worse when your target audience becomes narrower and narrower, like, say, the relatively tiny world of film academics.

  • @themorbidzoo

    @themorbidzoo

    3 жыл бұрын

    That has some truth to it, there are definitely niche topics that go in and out of fashion in academia, but the academic community is larger and more heterogenous than you might expect. Additionally, unlike on KZread your career and ability to feed yourself lives on the strength of your argument, not algorithmic engagement. Academics are expected to have a good understanding of film form and analysis, but are also expected to know much more than the average undergrad about film history, art history, philosophy, and the business of the industry, and are constantly being held accountable by other scholars for what they say. For example, you'd never see a film academic say something like "CGI is bad" or "ambiguity is a plot hole." That's why they don't take KZread seriously, it's considered reductive and standardless discourse. But none of that matters if the non-academic world never sees your research!
