I tend to agree, but I also think people give themselves far too much credit. People tend to mostly fall into either the "people are mostly good, but there are bad apples" camp or the "people are shit so only look out for #1" camp. With the earth crawling with more humans every day and so frighteningly few of them either being a Hitler or a Da Vinci, I think it's more accurate to say that most people actually don't matter. The world isn't a battle between saints and sinners. The world is 1% saints, 1% sinners, and 98% irrelevant. Most people (I would argue by a pretty huge margin) simply don't matter. On the note of power corrupting, I think Frank Herbert put it best - "It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible."

It's actually stored in a different part of the brain, nearer to the brain stem, than normal language. Alzheimers patients when they lose the ability to speak, the swear words are the last to go.

It's funny, but I never assumed that King's quote about things bending towards justice in the long run meant that they do so without our effort. I always took it to mean there is a huge struggle with pushing back and forth, two steps forward and one step back, but in the end justice simply has a more sustained appeal for a larger set of people and thus slowly wins out against all the efforts against it. To my surprise, I have been hearing a LOT of people who understood it to mean that justice will win on its own so we can trust it to find its own way.

I once believed it would eventually come on its own, but not so sure now.

I was told that it was rebroadcast in a more modern manner somewhere in Northern Michigan back in the 90's, and people were freaking out. They had substituted names and places to be in the local area 😂

We have all heard that history repeats itself. Actually……. HISTORY RHYMES!!!!!!!

Good morning!

Yeah, I remember my father telling me this story. My father and his 12 brothers all lived in Morristown New Jersey and that's all they listened to was the radio mainly for the NY Yankee games. My grandparents only really knew Italian and very little English. But it seemed that it was mainly this area and being a kid would make you a little scared.

Growing up in the 70's with high school US History courses in Iowa and Washington state, I never heard a narrative that the founders were perfect angels. I was taught, and it was widely known about the facts regarding their lives in the 1770s. The whole narrative of the founders being perfect came later in the 80s when Reagan was popular with conservatives. Liberals seem to be the only ones who think they are doing everyone a favor by pointing out that the founders were all white men with slaves. This idea that most Americans would be surprised to learn about slavery in the colonial US is just bullshit. We were absolutely taught about the mistakes, but their basic ideas for starting a country were sound and the Democracy that they set up brought changes and progress leading to a civil war that abolished slavery. I'm sure there are parts of the country where history is/was taught differently, but we don't need to spread the lie that American students have been lied to about the founders charactor flaws looking back through a modern lens. As an old white liberal Democrat I see these deceitful arguments as not helping our cause in winning elections and making more progress. Supreme Court anyone?

I know now that the War of the Worlds broadcast panic was very over-blown & exaggerated but I could understand people being confused/concerned if they tuned in late & given the context of war in Europe at the time. It doesn't seem too dissimilar to certain mockumentaries aired on Animal Planet (mermaids, mega shark) that had people confused since it was done in a format that people were familiar with (investigative/documentary/interviews with scientific experts) The line between information & entertainment is very blurry these days. Edit: really enjoyable interview. Definitely going to check out James' webite & books :)

Heavy Chicago accent, ex-railroad worker with a great memory for Latin names and family associations. As far as I'm concerned the Explosions and Fire episode on White Phosphorus is essential. A horrible substance, internationally banned, that's still in widespread use. Russia is bombing Ukraine with it and vice-versa, US still uses it as a smoke producing agent(bullshit!). There's alot of lighter content too where every reaction seems to produce "fucking yellow powder".

The founding fathers did not end slavery. Slavery wasn't ended until 1865. And everybody who voted for and against emancipation proclamation was from the north since the south wasn't part of the USA. They didn't get a vote in the matter. Lincoln basically had to persuade his own northerners to vote against slavery despite the fact that the North was against slavery strictly for economic reasons and not moral reasons. Even Lincoln, at the beginning of his presidency, had no intention of freeing slaves. He only did that to keep Europe out of the civil war to help out the confederacy. Ending slavery was a struggle that almost failed.
