On the Stage where Buddy Holly played his last concert - The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa

Музыка

A few weeks ago I travelled to the United States to visit various locations associated with my musical hero, Buddy Holly. The first place I visited was the Surf Ballroom in the lovely city of Clear Lake, Iowa, where the staff kindly allowed me to play a song on the stage and record a video. I decided to play Buddy's first hit, That'll Be The Day.
Buddy performed here on the 2nd February 1959. After this concert, Buddy, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens boarded a small plane from the nearby Mason City Airport. Shortly after take off, during a snowstorm at around 1am on the 3rd February, the plane crashed into a corn field. The three rock 'n' roll stars were killed along with their pilot, Roger Peterson.
The Surf Ballroom is still a thriving music venue, as well as a museum. It was a great thrill to be able to play a song on the spot where Buddy stood on that evening

Would Buddy have been bigger than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had he lived, I think so. A nostalgic video. Great.

@Rock 'n' Roll Songbook. Great job and that had to be an honor. I have played that stage before and it has a lot of Music History and some great sound comes from that stage. Which Staff Person did you talk to and get that arranged ? If you do not mind me asking. Did you get a chance to visit the Plane Crash Site also ? Congratulations and always look for your guitar tutorials/lessons and music covers. God Bless.

Thanks very much Fred! Yes, it was a great thrill playing on that stage. I spoke to two ladies who were working in the office. I can’t remember their names. Yes, I did visit the crash site. I took my guitar and played some music there too.

OK, Jez: spill !!! I am consumed by jealousy & envy here-how did you manage this ??? I lived in Iowa for 12 years & never made it to that stage. I DID play a 15 minute set in front of that headstone on a Sunday morning in 2007 for a few people. The Buddy Holly Apartment Tapes were very influential to me. I did a 3 song medley of Apartment Tapes songs at the Whisky A Go Go a few months ago (I was fortunate to have Slim Jim Phantom onstage with me) as an opening act for Janet Gardner (Vixen). A similar medley is also in my "Disappointed With Harley Benton" video. Thanks to you I will probably spend some time & money at the Sun Studio recording my songs after the holidays !! Merry Christmas to you & your family.

I just went along to the Surf Ballroom and asked. It was a quiet morning. There were only two other visitors. I’m very lucky, I know. I gave a nice donation to the museum fund afterwards. I absolutely love the Apartment Tapes too. Merry Christmas!
