As a 14 year old (in 1958) my fellow pupils and I had the great good fortune to have a great music teacher who was very open-minded as to the type of music each of us enjoyed. When she asked me who my favourite singer was - I replied Buddy Holly. As I was a parish church chorister this took her by surprise. I was even more surprised when she told me she loved Buddy Holly's music.

I love Buddy Holly but better than Elvis? All the early Rock stars were the producers of their music. When Elvis went to RCA he was in charge of the material and sound it was not Steve Sholes. Sholes thought he would be fired after RCA heard Elvis's first session because they were not interested in Rock. Those guys had to record a song live in the studio and could put pieces together. Of course with money that Heartbreak Hotel made for them they built one of the most successful studios ever in Nashville

Elvis and Buddy played at the same club in Lubbock at least one night maybe twice. I read somewhere that Elvis busted the strings on his guitar, which he always did, and Buddy let him use his. I think Buddy didn't have or want a drummer in his band after he saw Elvis the first time in Lubbock but when Elvis was back with DJ as the drummer of their band Buddy went out and got his drummer. I don't know if this is true or not but I do know Elvis liked Buddy and told a girl he was with that Buddy was great after she had said she didn't think he was that good. When Buddy was killed in the plane crash Elvis sent a letter to Buddy's widow saying how sorry he was to hear what happened. Elvis was in the Army in Germany at the time. Elvis covered a lot songs and his people would suggest songs sometimes from certain singers that he admired and there were a few times I know where he would just say I can't a better job on a song he thought was perfect. He never recorded a Roy Orbison song and wouldn't doubt that's why he never did one of Buddy's especially one of his ballads

This is a terrific video. Loved it. If the real Buddy Holly had lived he would have rivaled Elvis as the King of Rock and Roll. Look at the amount of great songs he recorded in such a short time. A real rock and roll genius. He created his own sound and so many other groups and musicians have been influenced by him.

A musical genius. His music encapsulated the dreams and hopes of young people as we headed towards the 1960s. His songs resonated with those of us who became teenagers in the '60s: love found, love lost and the dream of the perfect love. Some of us found it, others didn't, sometimes we didn't recognise the love till it was too late. For all the amazing music that was the soundtrack to our growing up, thank you Buddy 👩❤️👨

Extremely rare. He changed the rhythm on it and re-recorded it as the version that became a hit. I wasn’t a fan until I heard “Rave On” two years after he died. As a young boy, I heard the Beatles do this song and thought, WOW, these guys know how to write slow love songs too. Woa, said one of my bandmates - that song was written by Charles Hardin Holl(e)y. Who? Ok, let me go and check on this guy... Buddy Holly. I have been playing his music ever since. TIMELESS classics that have provided so much influence to those in R&R. I was at a Grateful Dead concert back in the early '70's, and they started to play Not Fade Away. I smiled when someone near me said that Dead songs are the best! I couldn't resist telling him that this was not Jerry or Bob who wrote that song, but a young man named Buddy. Like Michelangelo, he created masterpieces at such a young age, and has made so many happy with his art. God Bless him each and every day!

This version of Words of Love is just utterly gorgeous. I've always loved this song, particularly The Beatles' cover, but the slower tempo as well as the mournful backing voices at the end actually brought tears to my eyes.

I don’t think people realize how ahead of his time he was!!! Musical genius. All Elvis did was sing songs that were written by someone else. Buddy wrote and produced his own music

This is a clip from the best London West End show I have ever seen. 20 plus years later I still remember that night as being the most fantastic night I've ever turned out for. I hope wherever you all are, life is being kind and thank you for your performance.

I have a complete collection of everything he recorded. Including a tape I picked up for two dollars at a garage sale which has his original version of Maybe Baby - the version that got turned down.
