As part of our continuing series "On the Road," Steve Hartman reports on how a school assignment to interview a vet turned into a personal mission to get him long-overdue recognition.

Actually with all sincerity hopefully she'll run for president. you really could use some presidents that actually care about veterans and anything else that's not right
this lil girl doesnt even know the half of what she did...she got a movement up and going...to long the wait for this American HERO
You put your life on the line for your country and you can't even get the medals you earn in a timely manner. Thank god for that darling little girl!!
Speaking of bravery! This little girl it’s way mature and wiser than many of us adults. Bless her heart!
Ok this little girl is AMAZING! And whoever raised her should be beaming with pride! Thank you Sir for your service And thank you to the cutest little patriot ❤🤗 For knowing the value of this man and what he did for our country. She is absolutely remarkable and you can tell she's destined for greatness. Another fabulous story Steve 👍
How sweet was that! Isn't it amazing what an 8-year-old can do?! I am so proud of that vet and of that little girl!
Goes to show that Heroes come in all ages and sizes. Bravo!
Thank you Sir for your service, and what an awesome young lady.
And a child shall lead them.
If I was a part of this honorable event, I would've taken all of his medals and displayed them along with his rank and military photo in a nice glass frame. He deserves it. Good story.

Yes, I'm always sure to have tissues nearby for Steve Hartman videos.
I'm not gonna lie, I tried hard to fight back tears but couldn't do it.
Damn onions I'm a grown man with tears In my eyes that young lady is amazing and that vet should have never had to wait 67 Years shame on the military for that
There are beautiful wholesome stories Somehow Steve Hartman find self stories that shows us humanity

This just came up in my video feed and I’m so glad it did! Wow! This is such a special story! Even though it happened years ago, it still brought a smile to my face.

Leanna you are a very special Young lady. As special as your friend Charles. May you both be in God's hands through your lives.

Charles Mowbray passed away on November 15th, 2021. Fair winds and following seas brother.
She did a happy dance
Many times, children have more of a sense of reality than adults (such as her statement "cuz he's brave!") She was not going to take it lying down. She was going to make sure he got them.
Sweet girl... so glad he got the metals he deserve.. thank you for your services...I salute you..
Steve: " How could you(re: Charles, WWII Navy Vet) be in a situation like that and not be scared?" At age 55, I was caring for my father, a WWII Navy Vet who was dying of cancer. He had classic PTSD though noone had acknowledged it in those days. He had all the signs and symptoms and was extremely difficult to have as a father. My siblings and I truly hated him. I use the word 'hate' reservedly, but that was the reality. I spent the last year of his life with him, absolutely refusing to do so initially. We watched the History Channel every night and had long talks about a childhood Mark Twain would have imagined. We talked about The War. I heard stories noone ever got to hear because they weren't there during that year. He was on the USS Abner Reed which was sunk, patched together and sent out in the Pacific again to be sunk, this time stem to stern. The first time he ended up in a lifeboat. The second, with only a lifejacket to protect him, he was fully in the water. Steve, when you asked Leanna, wasn't he scared? How could you be in that situation and not be scared? That was exactly what I asked my father, in almost childlike wonder. He simply said "no" without any discernable emotion. He said there was no time for that. For the first time in my life I said to him:"Dad, I've waited for you my whole life, and you are worth the wait." In any case, all that came rushing back to me instantly when you incredulously asked Leanna those words. Once again, a now unforgettable gift from you, Steve Hartman. Thank you.

I’m very glad you had that time and those talks with your father. Sometimes that generation was a tough one to communicate with, they were so stoic and mission focused. But you worked through the fog and found the gems. Good for you.

The past and the present collide and there is pure magic! The children are our salvation.
Great story but kinda surprised there was not a honor guard and other military officials to do the presentation.

Right. And where was Sen. Mikulski? If her staff was really paying attention, they would have had her at that assembly. I’m glad they were able to make it happen. As a former Hill staffer myself, it is these letters we loved, cause it was an easy fix and a win-win for everyone.
