The Gift: Kindness Goes Viral with Steve Hartman

Steve Hartman, the correspondent for CBS News' iconic "On The Road" franchise and "Kindness 101" on "CBS Mornings," shows us how one simple act of kindness creates a ripple effect. In this one-hour CBS special, Hartman shares stories of ordinary people committing extraordinary acts, changing lives and inspiring others to do the same.

@@openminds8765 Great idea!!! They have cartoons and crossword. The kindness pages. C for catharsis. I think some people would read the kindness page and think that's all they have to do to be kind though? Catharsis is the opposite of Dynamism. The kindness page would have to be dynamic in some way. Like sponsored with free ad space for local businesses. Or the kindness page reports are done by kids doing internships for college. Communications majors....

This morning, the 1st Day of 2023, my husband and I were blessed and shocked by a stranger's Act of Kindness. My husband has lost his vision and has had several surgeries (4 hospitals in the last 8mos). Going out is a treat and challenge. He is in a wheelchair, and I have a hip-to-toe leg brace. Doors are the worst, I've become more used to folks watching my struggle, or he remains in the car. TODAY, 2 young guys came to open both doors to enter the restaurant, which was amazing. We were seated, placed our order and enjoyed our breakfast, waiting to receive our ticket, our waitress informed us that our ticket had been paid, I was shocked. What a blessing surprise, and as we left, a young man entering the restaurant helped us leave. I WILL PAY IT ONWARD

Hopefully you didn’t have that leg brace on for long and that you were able to pay it forward. I hope 2024 started off better than ‘23 did. Unfortunately with the infestation of social media people are more interested in getting a great shot of someone or something that they can put on their SM page. It’s a sad state when people are so wrapped up in their social media status that they can’t see the struggles of their fellow human beings!

Then I went down stairs and met a friendly dog......He wanted to smell what my husband had in his hand. It was a chip of granite and he would have been happy to take it but his owner pulled him away. I started watching OTRWSH regularly in August, 2018. I had decided I just couldn't handle watching videos and reading articles about a certain "politician." I needed something more positive--and Steve Hartman (along with The Dodo and some other animal KZread Channels) was it. It's been remarkable watching how Steve's Kindness activities have mushroomed. I'm thrilled for him and for those who have appeared in his stories. I don't do jealousy; but when I see someone like Steve who has clearly found what he is supposed to be doing in this life, on this planet, I could almost feel envious. And thanks a million for making sure that these videos appear on KZread. I live outside the U.S., and none of the cable companies here have CBS, and I won't pay for a streaming service. If not for KZread, I never would have watched Steve and shared his videos with my ESL students here.

I'm so old, I watched this same segment when Charles Kuralt did them, traveling around the country in an old RV. Steve has carried on Charles' legacy quite well. It is a nice relief from the rest of the news, as well as a great reminder that an act of kindness doesn't have to make the news in order to impact someone's life. It can be as simple as holding a door, having what seems to be an unimportant conversation in a doctor's waiting room, or picking up a hurt animal on the side of the road and getting it help. No great sacrifice is required to smile at someone or have a kind word for someone having a bad day.

So heartwarming to see so many kindhearted, gracious people out there! And even nicer to know that they are being celebrated! And yes! Acts of kindness may change the world! ❤ *** BTW, Mr. Hartman, I commend you for the superb job you have done in this documentary program! We need more programs like this! Thank You!

This was VERY inspiring & well needed commentary on the importance of doing & showing acts of kindness. Although, the story the little boy told about his parents being divorced made me sad. I love the reasons he gave on why his bus driver meant alot to him, and although he articulated his feelings in a mature manner, it hurrts me that he is subjected to issues that a child shouldn't have to be privy to or worry about. But on to a funny note, the little boy sleep on the bus with his mouth open 😴 made me burst into laughter 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I felt his sleepiness down in my spirit😩🤭🤭🤭

I Love Steve H. And his kindness series kept me sane during Covid. I volunteer at my local middle school, math and science tutoring. I feel connected, I don’t have children, never wanted children. But my mother was a teacher, lord, a generation of potential doctors, scientists, mathematics….gone. I went from alone to a community. I am shy, but maybe find people like me. Teaching, to be able to tutor, changes lives.

I can have a tilt toward pessimism, hard truths, and deep sobering messages. I felt so heavy today. I literally typed in “positive news”. This popped up. This is so encouraging and inspiring. Thank you

What a beautiful message, needed so much today! From the seed of On the Road with Charles Kuralt and later inherited by Steve Hartman, the message has continued to grow and evolve, and the world has benefited for sure. Well done CBS! Thank you for seeing the benefit in showing the message of kindness to the world!

What an uplifting program. I think we are seeing so many gifts of kindness. People watch and feel so good that they want to do acts of kindness. More and more of these acts are highlighted and I feel it is having an impact on society. We went out to dinner on New Years and just waiting to be seated I saw people go out of their way to open doors, to say Happy New Years. There was an incredible feeling in the air and people were chatting with strangers. It was palpable.

Love Steve Hartman's stories. I would like to share one thing. A smile. My favorite quote is, "A smile can be seen in a flash but the memory of it will last a lifetime". I try hard to smile at as many people as I can & the benefit is a brilliant smile back at me. That's enough to make me smile even more.
