We all know the future.. We all know our loved ones will die one day... and that we will have to endure heartbreak and tragedy and enormous suffering as we go on this journey in life. Knowing this.. why do we choose to love? Why do we choose to make the connections that ultimately will end one way or another? Because it is worth the price. It is that which makes life worth living. We are cursed to go on and love, only to be heartbroken or have Death take everything dearest from us. Arrival is a reminder to live life to its fullest and to embrace the choices where we know the ending.. because although we don't know the time or place, we definitely know that our future stories must end one day as well. "If you can see your whole life from start to finish... would you change things?" Make that answer be no.

The best little reference of this movie was naming her daughter "Hannah", which is a palindrome (reads the same from beginning to end as from end to beginning), and a fitting name to include in a story in which time is circular. Her name is just as the aliens experience time: the same forwards as backwards. It's such a great film; one that encourages deep thought of not only our own existence and mortality, but also that of our shared experience with those around us, and with whom we are fortunate to share in these short few decades together before separating forever as we enter the phase of death following our own phase of being alive. The genius of this movie is that it forces you to ponder such relationships and confront your own mortality and to (hopefully) wake you up to the fact that your time alive is short (relative to that of the cosmos), and to encourage you not to squander this short, precious gift of 80 or 90 years that has been bestowed upon you. Much love to all those reading this. Don't waste your life.

"don't waste you're life" - also a book by John Piper. A guiding theme is that God is most glorified in you by your satisfaction in him, even in the midst of loss and suffering as he is your treasure.

@@Phillip1220 Except worshiping the backwards idea of the biblical god is literally the definition of wasting your life. And why would a god be glorified by your satisfaction in it? What an egotistical god. One of the greatest things to come out of loss and suffering is the realization that you can both overcome and experience such a radical opposite of happiness. Suffering is part of what makes humans so unique - our ability to both think and feel in abstract and physical ways, even the ways which are agony. Don't give god credit for shit like this.

I know right,... WTF?.. Incredible. The depths of it, the sheer magic of the way it all links together and the more you watch it others things start to make sense.. like did you realise their ships were designed exactly for this moment only because the aliens already knew the outcome and what was to happen. So the ship was designed with a corridor which would suspend them after the explosion.. they knew exactly when the explosion was going to happen and pre-designed the ship ready for that to happen.. mind blown!

Was there 4 years ago. Watched my marriage fall apart and literally could do nothing. I lost her. I sat for months listening to this song nightly. We tried working it out 2 years into it all and it lasted 6 months. I walked away. I literally lost everything. My home..my friends..my family... my step daughter... my life. Luckily we finally got divorced and I met someone else that has done so much more for me as a person. We are engaged and living together. That was literally the hardest time in my life. I remember the first week after moving out I was so lost I just sat for hours into the early morning and for the first time in my life I thought about ending it all. I felt so alone but something kept telling me to hold on. So I did. Now I'm the happiest I've ever been. If I can make it through the hardest and darkest time in my life..anyone can

And so poetic to have that particular child, knowing that she is destined to die an early, painful death. Rather than making use of your precog gift and take IVF and genetic editing to give her a complete life. "But it would not be her! It would be someone else". But then why do you reproduce? I love them more now than ever before, because this music reminds me, once more, how important they are in my life. They seem to say to me, life is worth living if you love us until our last day. Being bullied and oppressed in work everyday due to I'm just 25 just graduate 3 years ago and still consider as inexperienced in my field of work (construction). Lowest salary among all friends. Couldn't quit or change the job due to covid. Had to be strong and act normal infront of my retired mum because I'm the only child to take care of her. There are enough people to listen to you. You're a brave soul for sharing this with a bunch of strangers, but you will get out stronger. It's nothing to be ashamed of to ask for help. Talk to your general practicioner about how you feel and tell her/ him that you would like to get it off your chest and discuss it with a professional. Really, believe me, that helps and puts things in perspective. Besides that, try to surround yourself with people who DO care about you, who like to be in your vicinity. Those are the most valuable in life and they DO exist. All the best 💪

I'm really sorry for all your losses. The reason this all happens to you, is because you are strong. You really are. One day the sun is going to shine again for you, trust me. If I may give you one advice as a mother, please share your feelings with your mum because she is also holding strong for you. You and your mum can be there for each other, support each other, listen to each other. It will make the pain and heartbreak a little less heavy. You and your mum are both in pain and holding strong for each other. When you show your feelings and your pain, she can do it also. And it will relieve both your pain by expressing and sharing it. I know it feels a little bit scarry perhaps, because mother/son and feelings are a difficult theme, but once you've done it, it will relieve the pain instantly. Recently my son told me that for a year he cried every night on his own, and I wish I had known... a very important thing you can give a mother, is opening up and let her being there for you. Lots of love and light for you

This music brings forth old pain as if it was fresh the day is happened. How strong is emotion that it can be tied to sound, sight and smell. These things being forth images of loved ones long since gone but never forgotten. Even as I cry I feel joy. That I can still remember the faces. Still hear the voices of those I have lost. Through this beautiful melody of song. Thank you.

Poem to dwell on: Tonight I can write the saddest lines. Write, for example, 'The night is shattered, and the blue stars shiver in the distance.' The night wind revolves in the sky and sings. Tonight I can write the saddest lines. I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too. Through nights like this one I held her in my arms. I kissed her again and again under the endless sky. She loved me, and sometimes I loved her too. How could one not have loved her great still eyes? Tonight I can write the saddest lines. To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her. To hear the immense night, still more immense without her, And the verse falls to the snow like dew to the pasture. What does it matter that my love could not keep her. That night is shattered and she is not with me. This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance. My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. My sight searches for her as though to go to her. My heart looks for her, and she is not with me. The same night whitening the same trees. We, of that time, are no longer the same. I no longer love her, that is certain, but how I loved her. My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing. Another's. She will be another's. Like my kisses before. Her voice. Her bright body. Her infinite eyes, I no longer love her, that is certain, but maybe I love her. Love is so short, forgetting is so long. Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer, and these the last verses that I write for her.

I‘m listening to this masterpiece while dawn is slowly breaking in blue and birds start to sing outside my window. I lay awake, thinking about how to confess to the woman I love. I feel young again with a heart full of fear, my mind clouded by the sheer burden of Love. She’s not my first, nor my second, but I really hope my last. Real love is like that. It grabs your reason and tosses it around the room. I feel like my heart is made of glass and a single glance of her could either brake it apart or light it up into setting sun. Hope and despair are laying side by side, whispering sweet nothings into my soul and all I can think of are her hair, her ears and her neck. The way she moves her lips before she speaks, or how she holds a pen when drawing. Her smile and her warmth and how utterly devastating it would be to loose her as a friend. Life isn’t easy, but music like this reminds me of why we live. I have to tell her.
