They lost everything. The last three standing at the end of the film on the railway platform. Her eyes beseeching him to step into the future with her and the child. And he, finally agreeing. After all the violence and loss, a new beginning. On my list as the best Western film ever made.

This movie caught me completely off guard. I started crying out off nowhere when I understood the message the movie conveys so beautifully: that we are all the same, but sometimes we can't help but see only that which makes us different. Once we make an effort to treat each other as individuals not as members of a group, though, we can see clearly who we are as a whole once again.
@crazychase98

On the flip side which it conveys to is everyone is brutal and morally gray. Nobody was really "good". It was just about hard people willing to forgive each other. But they most certainly still disliked each other.

That is what I try to do silently every day...Considering others as unique personalities. And having respect for everybody.I don't ask for recognition. I do it because it is the thing to do and what everybody should do. The world would be a better place if people stopped comparing each others...The individual is stronger than the group, that's what I always believed in. But we need to live in harmony in society.

This film is a masterpiece that takes to the heart. A psychological, violent and profound western, which breaks the codes of the classic western. There are no bad men or good men, just people trying to get out of hell whether it is outside or inside their heads. Wonderful!
I really appreciated this movie. It didn't give us the usual boring "white man bad" story we've seen a hundred times. It was very nuanced and explored all the grey zones of the conflicts between the white and native americans. Neither side is truly heroic or truly evil but have big flaws.

This movie deserves special attention. You feel that you are there with them and you perceive how in those times you could really die for nothing and in less time than you could imagine. Violence was in every corner and the deprivation of rights beyond all limits. Bale (as usual honestly speaking) acts supremely. So is it courageous to want to die, since you put an end to your suffering and preserve others from your suffering? I just can't get aligned with this idea, I don't know why. @@alexandrech8874 Perhaps that is why you do not see this way. The mind tends to blind itself to its biases. I for instance do not find it hard to grasp as I've spent the latter decade of my 22 years sharing such sentiments. So much so that I've been conditioned into a train of thought. My mind contrary to yours has developed a bias towards self-destruction in all its forms. Now that I've emerged from it all I'm still subject to the same patterns of thought. I now have to consciously see otherwise. like you stated Culture and upbringing are factors but also biology has a role to play in this. I've had a negative predisposition, from an early age. Low dopamine, serotonin Etc. I just felt as if nothing was ever enough. I couldn't fill the void within me so I'd actively abuse sources of addiction until they lost their utility. Eventually, all sources were spent, i was no longer able to get my fix. Unable to distract myself any longer I was forced to face reality for what it was, transitory. Sorry for the long post, just felt like sharing.
