It's a real treat to hear an intellectual music lover like yourself, hear the intricasies and talent level (missing today) that went into writing in the 70's! So so glad I came up with the music of the 60's & 70's!!!

Some of the best guitar music you'll ever hear. Rossington, Collins, Gaines, & King. They all complimented each other so well, especially the 3 guitar attack of Collins, Rossington, & Gaines. All world class guitar players. Gaines was a freak of nature man, excellent player. I'd give anything to play like any one of those guys. I love this band! Unfortunately one of the biggest tragedies the music industry has ever known.

That Smell was a not so subtle shot at one of the guitar players in the band. Gary Rossington had crashed his car while intoxicated and caused the band to delay their tour. Ronnie Van Zant ran that band with an iron fist and you didn't challenge him

Really enjoyed your view and comments on these songs,. This group has so many songs, albums with Not one single bad song on them, I was in high school in the seventies and this group and the Eagles were just directing our lives. Music was the breath of life, it moved us in directions and impacted our entire life. Thanks for relating 👍👍

I love the point you made of how they went from one world to another. That Smell was my anthem while in my first months of getting clean. 18 years later I relapsed several times, now 14 years straight , I still get as moved by it as ever. THATS good art, it timeless. I have always and always will led a bohemian lifestyle. Now its a lot more rewarding without being numbed by drugs and alcohol. I may be old, but Im still on the hunt, even though its been the same girl I hunt everytime for the last 28 years, lol. Every word of "That Smell" is 100% true. Im glad that I heard the nmessage before its to late, many wont. Bohemianism is a great life to lead, but its about self expression, not self destruction, and thats all drugs and alcohol will do to a person. Dance with the devil, he will lead everytime.....

Check out their song “I Need You” before the month is up please ♥️ I would love to see your reaction to Skynyrd’s live album “One More From The Road” sometime. It is considered by many to be the best live album ever!! It was recorded at The Fox Theater in July of 1976 over a 3-day period. It is absolutely top notch!! You gotta hear it. They do a cover or “Crossroads” by “Cream” that I feel is as good or better than the original 👌🏼 Thanks for your interest in my Favorite Band 😉♥️

STB, single, double, triple or quad makes no difference. ALL of your reactions are GREAT, better than anyone out there. As far as a " renaissance, resurgence" whatever you want to call it....FORGET ABOUT IT! There are good rock bands out there that tell awesome stories but they got their chops from the era you're covering now. It can't get any better then the 60's and 70's, if it did, we couldn't handle it!

Thoroughly enjoyed this reaction to action, its totally chill how you collectively break it down cover all the angles with an open mind, & bring out good observations RVZ was a poet & prophet that seemed to have the ability to influence so many oftenly taking a dire situation and putting a positive spin with their stories /music. The timing the chemistry the messages they were saying , the badass guitar army (that alone is a feat in itself sometimes to orchestrate,w/ attitudes egos etc) thanks for the great review of a great band that has impacted so many, then, now and in the future 🌴⚾👣🎤🎸🎸🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶📀💰🤘🐊 Rock on ✌️🐾🌴jf

Like James T said below. Ronnie did aim this at Gary who had crashed yet another muscle car while blitzed ,causng headaches . He also was however talking to himself & the rest of the band & crew ,& the fans as well I think. One of the freakier things about the song is the fact that 3 days after it was released , their Convair 240 aircraft crashed , actually hitting an oak tree that shattered the vessel and the passengers . Most of the forest was all pine . They probably would have been ok if not for that big oak tree.

I enjoyed your critique of the song "That Smell". I graduated from high school in 1976 and southern. I agree with you whole heartedly about the transition music has taken. I like your idea that the music of the 60s & 70s was a renaissance period. I am fully aware of the greatness of that period when compared to the last 20 years. I do not have any idea how it happened that new generations did not follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest artist ever recorded. I often wondered how my generation would be remembered. I have to say that I am not disappointed. It was a pleasure listening to your educated analysis.

"And they call you prince charming, cant speak a word when your full of ludes"(qualudes). 1 of the 3 guitar players named Gary Rossington was nick named prince charming. Gary had taken a handful of qualudes and drinking bourbon and smoking weed and hit that oak tree. The same weekend, one of the other founding guitar players, the late, great Allen Collins who co wrote the song and did a lot of the great guitar solos in it had a worse wreck where he was drunk and high and passed out, hit two parked cars, sailed across a big parking lot and took out a few more cars. The band had 3 big shows coming up that had to be postponed. Ronnie put all on notice that this behavior stopped then and now and ronnie himself cut his drinking almost off, swore off coke and started getting in shape. The upcoming 1977 tour ronnie felt would be huge and wanted EVERYONE in top form. He hired his childhood best friend Gene Odom (a friend of mine also and i ran his skynyrd web site for 6 years) was hired by ronnie for chief of security and keep folks out of car wrecks and bar fights and to much drug and drink. The irony of this song? The guy Ronnie Van Zant pointed up in That Smell, gary rossington (prince charming) is the ONLY original skynyrd member still alive today!! Thank you so much for featuring americas greatest band. A note on Ronnie: he had a photographic memory and NEVER wrote any lyrics down. Also performed barefoot as he ssid "i love to feel that stage burn".

I grew up in the 70's and I remember, there were so many great bands, people of many ethnic backgrounds were making and writing some great music. Allen Collins who wrote the song plays ALL of the original guitar solo and it is a ferocious cut!! They faded freebird off on the 1st album for time constraints but allen plays it all on this cut. Still the same tune but PLAY THE ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD version of freebird in 1976. Dont do the studio version off the 1st record!!
