I was at this presentation. Very well thought out and presented. Great photographic images of the area.

really hope they reopen this route in the near future. All the infrastructure is there, just needs to be rebuilt, and when complete, would make getting from Santa Cruz to the bay area so much easier and would alleviate congestion from highway 17.

Derek: To the best of you knowledge, is there any entitiy who possesses moving images of the SPC in operations across the mountain, through any of the four tunnels, etc. Let it be known that is my "Holy Grail" of all films. I really really need to know. Yours truly, Rick Helin, Film Archivist and digital transfer person for the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County.

Greetings Rick. I have never seen a single film of operations in the mountains at all, although a movie in the 1930s depicts some scenes along the route in the vicinity of Zayante Station and there are several home movies showing people at Big Trees and south beginning in the 1930s to the present. Considering the mountain route was completely converted to standard-gauge in 1909, I find it very unlikely that any film survives of the route prior to that time. Any official film that may have been recorded by Southern Pacific was probably lost in the 1906 San Francisco fires.

Hi Derek, I am building a replica of the SPCRR from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz and I would want to know if you had the grades and elevation gain between milepost. Thank you

Do you have any specific comments? I can guarantee you that I was quite prepared for this presentation and did hours of additional research for it.
