Fun fact: Finnish military still uses the lanterns shown at 2:44 as interior lighting in tents. They're honestly pretty handy, especially in camping environments where you don't have electricity and can do without very bright lighting. Thanks for the good video!

My house was originally built before central heating and electricity. It has the remains of three chimneys and was piped for gas light. Over the decades I was told by different professionals my gas light pipes are a dead system with only some left over gas in the lines. I found out otherwise around a decade and a half ago. A local handyman was working on a ceiling fan at a 2nd floor bedroom had uncapped the pipe igniting the gas. I work at night and work up to the screaming from my bedroom at the 3rd floor. I went down stairs in a daze and seen the contractor waving his hat at the flames yelling for help. I looking at a long flame jet and realized that it is under pressure from a live line and not left over gas from a dead line. I had installed fire extinguishers at every hallway floor, the kitchen, basement and such. In a mental daze rather than grabbing the 2nd floor hallway extinguisher that was a few feet away I retrieved the kitchen extinguisher on the 1st floor. After reading the instructions on how to use the extinguisher I had turned out the fire. After capping the gas line and inspecting the system we determine it is live and the gas light pipe are used for the kitchen gas range and basement gas water heater. Contractors in their mistake over the ages have used the so called dead gas line as an electrical ground and anchor points for electric lighting. Me and the handyman was busy for the next few days correcting the dangerous mistakes.

I do a lot of shopping at the local Amish harness & fabric stores, where gas lighting is still used. It makes for rather a cozy atmosphere. ...Well, when it's not the heat of summer. ':P Thanks for the video guys! :)

Just a little more tech: The chimney also provided draft upwards (as the flame burned, the air heats and then flows upward, drawing in fresh air from below), which make the flame burn hotter, brighter and whiter (but seldom actually white) without burning more oil. They only helped distribute the light if they were frosted. Plus, they needed to be cleaned regularly, of they would turn black from carbon deposits from the soot from the burning oil, which nobody liked doing because the soot (called 'carbon black', and is so black it's still used in black ink today) sticks to everything.

While some people blame Mrs O'Leary's cow for the great Chicago fire of 1871, it was pretty well known at the time that anarchists were setting fires. Historically, towns in the old west were often made of wood and tents. Until they were built of bricks, they often burned. Electricity came to the towns first, often in the form of their own electrical power plants. It was only much later that electrical service came to the farms and ranches. I knew a turkey farmer in the 1960's who inspected his turkeys at night with a common kerosene lantern. It was said that where the wire loop rested on his arm, he had calluses.

When we used to go camping, our nightly entertainment was watching dad light the Coleman kerosene lantern. It took him about 1/2 hour to get it going with lots of cursing and frustration on his part. It didn't burn liquid kerosene but burned it as a gas after the liquid was pressurised. I never knew how it worked I'm only guessing here. One day it got knocked over and was ruined and we didn't go camping anymore.

Did you know that the side posts of those rail/outdoor lanterns are hollow and feed gas collected from the top back to the flame? There were two kinds, a cold and a hot returns. One collected from the top, and the other more directly from the bottom. This increased the brightness slightly, and also reduced the amount of exhaust, making them better for indoor use......and now you know.🙂
