It’s been almost 30 years since this happened. It’s only a matter of time before those tectonic plates slide past each other again. I’ve been paranoid about it ever since I learned that this happened in the early 2000s. I live way too close to San Francisco for that crap.

I remember someone telling the police that they could hear someone left between the two free way floors. The police responded "Everyone is out of there now". Three days later you could still hear people screaming and calling for help, the guy told the police again and they said they could not get the people out.

Nerys Ghemor it is hard to understand but the lack of stability meant that any action could cause further damage to the already badly damaged structures. It also has to do with responsibility for the deaths if actions were taken. It not right or ethical in my opinion but it was the reality of the day.

How do you prepare to start over with nothing in your 70s like my parents did? The devastation from hurricanes for years to come is generational and horrible, seriously they're not even close to the same thing.

This affected my family too. My father and his wife lived in northridge when the quake happened. My oldest child was 4 months old. It was 8 days before I got word that they and my brothers were all okay. The collapsed high way was the same route my dad took to work everyday. He was walking down the driveway to the car when it hit. They still live out there in Apple Valley.

I was there in San Francisco in July of 89 my first time visiting The City. It was hard to imagine anything happening to the most beautiful and breathtaking area in the entire country! I went back East for my sophomore year in undergraduate school and a girl I dated at the time ran into the college library were I was working and told me about the quake from watching the World Series! I couldn’t reach my friend who lived in Sacramento for like 2 weeks! Many mixed emotions as I watch this video and the profound sadness I felt about that marvelous city! But also encouraged by the bravery shown by all citizens to help out! God bless San Francisco!

I was4 when this happened and lived in palo alto due to my father working at HP. My dad was home a little early as my brother and I were sick that day, he pulled into the garage just as the quake hit. If he had been working a normal day it us very likely he would have been on the overpass when it collapsed. The sound, feel and smell of the quake is my first clear memory and is still hard to explain to those who have never experienced it

Different soil type. We get earthquakes in Toronto and London (I've lived in both) and barely feel them, but we're on the Canadian shield, bed rock. California isn't on bedrock. I suspect Alaska is built on something that withstands earthquakes better than most of California. Some places are prone to earthquakes but aren't at risk.

I was in 3rd grade when this Quake happened and my mom had just driven off The Cypress Freeway 5 minutes before it collapsed. We lived only 5 minutes away from The Freeway. My mom and I were outside of our house in the garage; when a few neighbors came around too talk, that's when two teenage young men came around and told Us the Freeway had collapsed. It was quite shocking, I mean we had just gotten off that Freeway. In the weeks following my mom describes it like Vietnam because of the Helicopters flying over every night and the smell of the dead bodies, accept I truly don't remember smelling anything. My allergies were so bad then I couldn't smell a thing mom could. After, everything had been removed from the Freeway; it became a rather Eye Sore it seemed like it took forever to tear down That Double Decker Cypress Freeway. Oh one other thing someone may find this interesting at the Time Oakland, San Francisco had its Quake, in 89, China had one too it killed 20 people. I sort of wondered if California and China shared a Faultline somehow. Hey who ever posted this piece on the World Series Quake, 1989, Don't forget too do The Oakland, CA & Berkeley Hill Firestorm. Where the only thing not burned by that Fire is The Claremont Hotel, and the fact the Fire Hopped The Freeway.

I think the part that scared people the most was the whole nation watching the World Series only to watch a disaster in real time, like a small scale 9-11. Baseball fans were shocked and confused when their game coverage was blink out and then returned to insane and chaotic broadcast. My parents lived in the Central Valley. They ignorantly called their in laws in Minnesota saying “omg we felt an earthquake so cool!” (Dad had only just arrived home to watch the game) .Only to have the family say “yeah the whole stadium collapsed!” (Not true but terrifying). Totally insane. Later My dad (an insurance adjuster at the time) was pulled in from his area to assist with the LA earthquake. Extra scary because he grew up in LA county.

I was heading to my car when the earthquake struck. Afterwards, I got in and turned on Giant 68 radio station. The World Series was on, and the announcer said in a bored voice, "We just had an earthquake, it was a 6.9. Looks like our World Series will be delayed awhile." Then he started talking with some ball players, interviewing them about their childhoods. It was 20 minutes before it occurred to them to evacuate Candlestick Park!

I was at home in Oakland and my husband just left work in San Francisco and trying to get on Bay Bridge when it happened. He couldn't get home all night and was wandering dark streets of San Francisco and couldn't even call me because phones were out (we didn't have cell phones then). Yesterday we had a 3.5 earthquake on the local Hayward fault and 3.2 the day before, I hope it will be quiet now for a while.

I live right across the St. Johns bridge in Portland. It's a majestic old bridge. There's been tons of talk about "The big one" the past few years for this area. Talk is cheap. I just hope that some implementation can be done for the bridges and infrastructure for an earthquake. If the I-5 or 205 bridge (that connect to WA) went down, it'd cripple the area drastically. The I-5 bridge is bad enough when it's operational. We talk about it... but I really don't think we're ready. We've got our disaster kit made, make sure you get yours too.

I live in NY and we rarely get them and if we do they are small. The area most at risk for quakes is the Pacific coast and that's because they are located on a major plate border where the Pacific and North American plates meet (and the Juan De Fuca plate in Washingtons case).

I was in Redwood City, 20 miles south of San Francisco, when it happened. I had just left work, walking towards my car, worrying because I had a math test to go to, and I hadn't studied for it. Suddenly, the ground started rippling like water. Telephone poles whipped back and forth, and cars without their parking brakes rocked. People driving by stopped and yelled, "Earthquake!" I had to stand with my legs apart, to keep from falling. After about 30 seconds, the shaking stopped, and the drivers casually drove off. I said to myself, "Shoot, I didn't want to miss the math test that bad!" Having grown up in California, I was used to hearing horror stories about what would happen when the Big One hit, but I noticed the police were there instantly, directing traffic. Neither I not anyone else I knew were seriously affected by the quake. I had previously discussed with a Stanford student the issue of being on the top floor of a San Francisco skyscraper at the time the Big One hit. He assured me the buildings would not collapse - then went on to joke that the G force would send them flying out the window. It turned out his joke was not too far off the mark. I understand those skyscrapers almost crashed into each other! I admit, a video of those tall buildings swaying would have been a sight to see!

I lived through the Whittier one in 1987, Landers in 1992, and Northridge in 94. I've learned since then, that the media can exaggerate when it comes to quakes. In 92, they treated the Landers as if it was a warning of the Big one.

I lived in Watsonville, which is in Santa Cruz County and not too far from the epicenter. I remember it vividly. It started shaking violently from side to side, then it slowed down to an elliptical motion. It lasted about 15 seconds, but that's all it took to cause all that destruction. The power went out. It was pitch black at night. A lot of people camped out that night., and even beyond. We saw that the devastation had been even greater up north, and that the nation was collectively mourning the disaster. Soon help started trickling in. The Red Cross arrived. We were offered cases of water and hot meals, which we were grateful for. Our area took a long time to recover. I don't even wanna think about 'The Big One". I hope we get prepared.

My question is if you reinforce bridges and buildings. How can you be sure they will stand? It only takes 1 piece to bring something down. And also you can prepare all you want it not like your gonna end up where you planned on being. Any nature disaster you can't really be fully prepare. You can be prepare for the aftermath.

Last year we had a 2.1 in SC. I was in the pasture, but felt nothing. The horses (4) started running around and snorting ( fear or alert signal ) I figured that maybe they had caught the scent of a coyote or wild hog. My dog ( Staffordshire terrier) was next to my leg shaking, as if cold or afraid. Did not realize we had had a mild quake until the 6 o'clock news. Watch the animals, they are more attuned to earthquakes that we are. Edit addition: Went to my homeowner's insurance company and asked about adding coverage for earthquake damage, they do not offer it. Wonder if they know something they're not telling us?

World Series have a lot of lives. At 5:04 p.m. on a Friday the freeways would have been an absolute gridlock. Thousands would have been crushed by the Nimitz overpass freeway collapse. And the World Series being played between the two cities affected by the earthquake find the game in San Francisco where the epicenter was in Oakland. And to make it even more surreal, and this I think it's really strange. That day was my wife's birthday and she predicted earthquake on her birthday 10 days prior. And furthermore, and very strange, my birthday falls on a major California earthquake that was a 7.9 to 8.2 and possibly the largest earthquake recorded in the lower 48. My brother was born on the same day as the big one in San Francisco which is where we live and I was born. Both those quakes what's 7.9 Loma Prieta 6.9. All of them in California and my wife's name is Kali. I think it's pretty strange and the odds are probably astronomical. I don't know, what do you think?

I live in Christchurch New Zealand, I've lived through the 7.1m, 10km deep 2010 & 6.2m, 5km deep 2011 Christchurch quakes, and the 7.8m, 15km deep Kaikoura quake. And all their aftershocks plus some smaller quakes of 4-6 magnitude. EARTHQUAKES AREN'T SCARY. Like have your house inspected after a big one, have dressers and tvs bolted down and use tape or blu tack to stick down other bits and pieces. When you're in a quake most of the time you don't have to move. I was on the couch home sick from school in the very violent quake of 2011 and I just stayed on the couch. I wasn't near anything that could fall and it was against an inner wall that definitely had a support beam in it since it divided the open plan living space into a U bend. Like our house did collapse kinda but not enough to hurt anyone, it just had an outer bedroom wall say 'see ya sis' and the house was on a massive lean. But Jesus there is no reason to panic, just calmly get up and move to a support beam or a doorway. Sometimes we get small 4 or 5m ones in the day and no one stops scanning groceries.

That particular earthquake in New Zealand was pretty bad and looking back the Christchurch earthquake on February 27, 2011 could be regarded as a foreshadowing to the far deadlier and more infamous magnitude 9.0 earthquake that shook northeast Japan on March 11th of the same year.

Willamette Valley Oregonian here, after seeing several smaller quakes (around 4-5's) off the coast and the fact that they barely make a blip on the news, its no surprise that we aren't ready for a big one. We are not only overdue for a major earthquake, we are also overdue for a major volcanic eruption. Politics are huge hurdle to getting the necessary funding for retrofits and other preparedness. Everyone wants to stick their head in the sand and adopt a "me and only me" attitude. Nobody wants to shell out more money for this kind of stuff because they think its not their problem or it wont happen to them. Well guess who's gonna be up a creek without a paddle when the time comes....
