Absolutely great video. I have anxiety and I took a class with a ACA certified instructor. Thank fully i was able to speak to the instructor privately before the class to discuss my situation. I wasn't sure how i would react in capsize practice. It turns out being upside down in a kayak isn't one of my anxieties strangely enough.

When you're starting, take a class. Learn bracing and rolling, and self rescue. Then - and this is critical - practice those skills until they are fully synthesized, meaning they are muscle memory instinctive skills you don't need to think about. That is the point where panic cannot override them. Every time you are paddling, do some bracing, do some rolls. If you have to think about them at all, do some more. Don't paddle in active water until braces and rolls are confidently in your repertoire.

Nice to see you again. I hope we find you well and things are manageable. This was an excellent video. Perfect suggestions. Overcoming fear is really critical. You told that experience well. I was under the water with you and felt all your concerns even before you stated them. It also explains now why you were so hesitant around the rock gardening. You always impress me with your dedication to learning and perseverance. 👍👍

Great to see you back Luke! Good advice here and timely too. I am in that struggle now after the health scare. It adds a subconscious layer of anxiety out in the more challenging conditions. The road back will be a stepped approach. The skill is there, but the hurdles are all mental at this point. Finding that one thing to build upon will be key. Good stuff!

Great to see you back. Your content and advice has encouraged us to book on a course on the sea for early next year. Thanks.

Based on footage from rock gardening, surfing, and general rough water there's not much reason you should be worried about any whitewater up to class 3 or thereabouts. Getting stuffed under a rock (rafts usually move on) or a strainer is ore likely on a river, but you'll probably never find surge that slams you against the same rock twice.

Hi KH, welcome back with your informative vids... is it possible to pass on contact info for the kayakers/clubs in New Brunswick you know of? I go there every year and haven't had luck connecting with anyone and would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Paddle looks great! Looks similar to the shape I prefer myself :) Also, wood gives a good grip, feels warm and reduces chances of blisters, alt least for me :)

I never done whitewater kayaking as I was never interested in it. I've always been into recreational kayaking mostly for wildlofe watching and taking photos and video then just simply being on the water. I think those sea kayaks are really cool but i don't think I will feel safe in one at all, too concerned about it flipping over. Always felt safe in my old town vapor 10 with the large open cockpit and solid stability. Believe it or not, I feel even more safe in the very inexpensive intex Tacoma k2 inflatable I just bought recently 😁

I have a Riot 12 which is wider than most sea kayaks. I paddle in the Clyde fjord (Scotland) and up along the Western Isles. Tide tables, charts completely necessary and 100% NO EXCUSES safety gear: PFD, VHF hand held radio, emergency beacon, helmet, dry suit, gloves, long Gill sailing boots, ACME Thunderer, compass, spare paddles, 2L water bag, high protein energy bars...MINIMUM!

@@barriereid9244 Thats great you are very well equipped. Is your Riot 12 the escape sit on top? I bet it is gorgeous out there too.

@@GulfCoastTim no it's a sit in. I am normally out for up to ten weeks. I carry an MSR Elixir 2 tent, UK Army sleeping bag & bivvy bag and sleeping mat. For shore life, HH waterproofs and short Gill boots...as well as change of clothes. Food for around three weeks and wood burning stove. A spray deck keeps me warmish and dryish and when I have capsized I climb back in, I do not roll as I have two deck bags fore and aft. I do practise rolls and manoeuvres without gear. See Google maps for the Firth of Clyde and Western Isles...dangerous waters...stay safe.
