So right! I studied guitar for many years, people said I was good, but, a really good friend was 100 times better than me.. He and I were talking recently, and my guitar hero went on and on about his guitar hero Glenn Campbell is 100 times more talented than he is. Truly, Glenn was one of the all-time best guitarists of all time.

Youre right... He doesn't get name-checked as one of the great guitar players of the last 50 years, but he definitely is one of the best. .... Usually only guitar players can see how intricate his playing is. And how difficult it is to play those licks while singing.

zyxmyk Not true. Thanks to KZread, everyone who wants to know about him will find him here and learn what Glen was. Simple things like playing the William Tell Overture with his guitar ON HIS HEAD, and that's just a start. I know nothing about the guitar other than to identify it by it's strings, it's general shape and the many different sounds it can make depending on whether or not it's electric or acoustic, etc. Glen learned to play on a $5 guitar his mom bought with her sharecropping money when he was just a young boy. He learned how to play without music, he played by ear, went off to play for money with his uncle Boo, from there the rest is history, and up until the final day he played a guitar, he still couldn't read music. That is pure talent.

Mr. Glen Campbell. He was the first celebrity I drove in the first Limousine I owned as Legacy Limousines in Joplin Missouri. It was sometime between 1995 & 1998. He had the Goodtime Theatre in Branson Mo. I spoke with him in the Airport restroom and told him I wanted to come see the show. He asked me how many tickets I needed to which I replied 4. He told me to call the theatre and they would have me 4 tickets complimentary. That was my most treasured "gratuity" if you will I have ever received. In the early 2000's, I sang several of Glen's tunes in Churches. See you on the other side Glen! ❤️🌴

How in the world is it that an audience witnessing this would not be clapping or tapping to this great rendition? From what I could see the audience just sat there listening as if they didn’t know what they were so fortunate to be experiencing. Maybe they were in awe of what they were hearing but on the other hand maybe they didn’t know that it wouldn’t get any better than what they were hearing on this particular night?

Waylon, Glen's friend was also an amazing guitar player that, as Glen, just knocked my socks off when he played. Waylon praised Glen Campbell publicly about how it was Glen that had the great TV show and never bragged on it, but he regularly had Johnny Cash, Waylon, all the fine Country singers on. He was one of the greatest guitar players ever! Thanks for this.

beauty for ashes A side note to that would be how Glen sang so many of Jimmy Webb's songs. They should have been glued together because together they were hit makers, the biggest being MacArthur Park, but also Galveston and Wichita Lineman to name a couple. His last wife Kim can be thanked for bringing him back to Christ. Going back to Jimmy, he was a preacher's son. One Sunday during the sermon, his dad noticed that Jimmy was reading a book rather than listening to the sermon and he called him out right there in the middle of the church service and sermon. Jimmy replied "A stranger in a strange land". His dad said something like "Well, I guess that could be said about Jesus as well" and continued his sermon. Jimmy was nearly peeing his pants because he knew he was going to get his butt beat that day. Of course he laughed as he told that story, but it was quite a few years after the fact.

@Bobby Klein Hello to you Bobby Klein, yes, I am a fan of Glen Campbell. Have been since I was 13 and my daddy ask me if I wanted this album, and it was "the one with Galveston and it had a big poster of him in it. He looked so young all the time, so I had a crush on him till I found out how old he was. My first date saw the poster and said he did not like it and he was too old for me anyway. I was 14 on our first date and James was 21.LOL. We ended up getting married nearly 4 yrs. later in 1973. But I am still a fan of Glen Campbell. Still have that album from 53 yrs. ago. We just celebrated our 49 anniversary. May 25, 2973.I hope I did not take up too much of your time. Hey, don't ask if you don't really want to know. 🥰🤣😂

One man one voice one guitar . Only a few that ever walked this planet could stand up on stage and sound like a complete Band. About 24 years ago. Glen was on Late night Radio. I believe it was the Art Bell show. Glen talked for 2 hours. About his life etc. The most humble man of talent. God blessed Glen with the gifts. So wonderful Glen was able in his later life to give the credit back to God ❤️🇺🇸

Yes. He’ s been one of the greatest guitar players ever to grace a stage. That’s undeniable. But, how about his extraordinary vocal range, his perfect pitch and the sheer power and beauty of his voice?

He definitely was a gift from God. It is great to know that he had great faith and shared his faith through his music. Many times he shared his Christianity when people went to see him in concerts. Three of my favourite songs he sang are Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling, What a Friend We Have in Jesus and his version of How Great Thou Art.

His technique in this clip on So. Nights is priceless. Sounds like an early version of the great Buster B. Jones (rip), song "Cologareed". Even make that Ovation sound like Buster's advanced designed Godin guitar a decade in, well, advance. Good entertainers leave them wanting more. This man, so great, more than all the great others who have left us, left me wanting more. Thank you, Glen! You are sorely missed.
