On how I approach strangers in the street | Humans of New York creator Brandon Stanton | UCD, Dublin

Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind the photoblog and #1 New York Times bestselling book Humans of New York has received the James Joyce Award from the UCD Literary & Historical Society at University College Dublin, Ireland.
On setting out in the summer of 2010 to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map, Brandon says that he "thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of New York City's inhabitants". Since then, Humans of New York has evolved into a catalogue of photographs of NYC inhabitants alongside quotes and short stories Brandon collects while speaking with them. Today, Humans of New York has over 4.5 million followers on social media offering them a glimpse into the daily lives of strangers in New York City.
"This award recognises Brandon's remarkable dedication and achievement in producing an expansive photographic record of the inhabitants of New York City. With over 6,000 portraits and narratives to date, and counting, Humans of New York lends its audience keen insights into this fascinating city and the way of life of its inhabitants," says Eoin MacLachlan, Auditor of the UCD Literary & Historical Society, University College Dublin.
The James Joyce Award is named in honour of University College Dublin's best known graduate, James Joyce, the author of Ulysses, who himself was a leading light of the UCD Literary & Historical Society.
Previous recipients of the UCD Literary & Historical Society James Joyce Award include: former White Stripes frontman, Jack White; the Beatle's music producer and arranger, the man known as the Fifth Beatle, Sir George Martin; Harry Potter author, JK Rowling; Satanic Verses author, Salman Rushdie; former Monty Python, Michael Palin; and The Who frontman and legendary rock star, Roger Daltrey.

Did anyone else notice, around 12:00 when he started talking about how he takes a broad comment and sort of narrows it down... that the room full of a few hundred students suddenly became a VERY intimate circle of humans? That's some powerful mojo Brandon's got.

I understand that some people do not like Humans of New York but think about it, he's letting people know that their story matters and some people love to share their story and everyone loves to feel like someone cares. Not to mention that even it's shared on Facebook thousands if not millions if people can also show that they care :)

Keep in mind these are Irish people, they have a lot of awkwardness when it comes to intimacy / hugging. Its a cultural thing. Self loathing Irish Catholics that think life is about suffering for God. Go listen to Bill Burr talk about doing stand up in Ireland and how the audience mocked him from not having emotional support/affection as a kid... That sums it up entirely. I thought this was my unique perspective / perception (being American who was raise Catholic and have a lot of Irish roots in my family). That was until I heard the Bill Burr bit recently.

I appreciated the video but thought you missed an opportunity with Ellen. Clearly, she had an immediate strong connection with this new 'best friend' who was off to Holland. What was it? People study romantic relationships, but friendship is also crucial and sometimes longer lasting. How do deep friendships form & last? In any case, I love HoNY. As a 5th generation NYer, who shifted north to Boston, I love how it allows me to visit home. Thanks

I started out lying to people (I know..its wrong but I was nervous) I'd say "excuse me, I'm a student at the art school and I'm doing a project on everyday people. The way you're dressed..(or the way you're sitting..or the way you look against this wall, etc.) looks so cool! Can I make a picture of you?" Most would say yes then I'd say ok, just pretend I'm not here. I'd pop off 2-4 shots shake their hand and say thank you with sincerity and move along. done! If you compliment them and smile while you're talking to them, it works 85-95% of the time.

I found this very interesting as a young amateur street magician who has to subject himself to rejection from strangers all the time. From what little comparative experience I've had it seems that he hit the nail on the head when he said "the words that I'm saying don't matter, it's all about the energy." I think this applies to life in general, whether it be complete strangers or your closest friend. People usually rely on the subconscious signals they get from you, and whether you convey confidence and love, or nervousness and shyness, is completely your choice.

this is gold, I am always get hung up on not saying the 'right' thing, and I realize it is your state of mind/energy, whether you are nervous. I have a stray cat that comes around, she used to be very afraid of me, and when I would approach to feed the cat I would try to just approach at a regular pace. Now I will just extend the back of my hand and let her smell me first, so can take a pulse of my energy or state of mind, She rarely gets afraid of me anymore, unless I make a sudden move.

sorry im a little late on this but if it's short answers he just remembers it in his head and probably writes it down after the interview but during some interviews, as you've probably seen on the page, people respond with paragraphs as answers and in those cases he pulls out his phone and writes them as they speak, i've seen him do it a few times in videos. :)

A photography is an art. He has strong mind in the pictures. Probably he can tell the story by looking at the pictures and includes in his head

Funny enough that is exactly the process I would do with people when I would work as a street salesman. Except more people will say yes to him as well as he said earlier, he's not after their credit card or money.

Dude, I absolutely loved the video. I would like to know how you do everything that you do to make your dream a success. I want to know the legalities of it all dealing with different age groups, especially those who aren't 18 years old. Thank you for showing me that this is possible.
