i just can't imagine someone can "drain a little" ... If you ever changed oil you know once the screw is out from the oil pan, its flowing really fast, and its not an easy job screwing it back while oil is rushing out not to mention that it will sprinkle everywhere, even at your face lol. Maybe removing the oil filter you can pour out a little oil from the filter thats enough to be at the proper level, then put back the oil filter because removing the oil filter will not drain every oil, only what remaining in the filter

you can easy drain out all the oil in a Pan and then refill with the same oil to the right level

Don't put the car too high up. If you can do it while it's flat that's better. It's not hard just make sure it's not hot and go slow. Hold on on to the plug. Not fun at all but not super hard. Definitely don't want to mess up again and put too much oil 🤣

I inadvertently overfilled my Infiniti FX45 by a quart yesterday. Got a ton of oil smoke out the tailpipe. Luckily I had just installed a Fumoto oil drain valve a few days ago so all I had to do was put an empty bottle under the valve, open the valve and drain out a quart. Closed the valve, checked the level, good to go.

it does not always lead to severe foaming and it is worth keeping in mind that even foamy oil tends to have the bubbles removed during the oil pump action on the oil where it is pressurized. Also, some engines have a margin of error in the distance between the extreme reach of the crankshaft and the top pf the pool of oil, so some safety margin is thereby built in. It is notable that modern oil formulations also tend to control foaming. Overfill is most disadvantageous in terms of the power loss of that crankshaft spinning in and oil pool, if the pool is too high then real damage may happen to the iron of the crank or block.

The most common "slight" overfill usually results from failing to change the oil filter but then adding the correct amount of oil specified, I have in the past caught several garages out on this by returning and showing them the pre marked filter with its old date marked on it.

I don't trust any garages to change oil they take most inexperienced people to do oil changes that make lots of dumb mistakes overfill the oil, strip drain plugs using air wrenches, and overtighten oil filters are just a few. I write the oil viscosity amount to put in with filter model of filter and wrench needed for drain plug on the plastic right on top of radiator in white paint marker for my own reference. and still get idiots who just throw in 5 quarts if it takes 4.3

Not thinking that the filter has 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart in it already. Yes, im aware not replacing the filter can result in it getting clogged. I spaced out and forgot.

I filled the small Honda up for my grandmother. I found out to let it run for or more than2 min than check it.. When i did it was above the line about 1 to 2 CM. Its not too bad. I drove it the night before woth the same oil lvl an o drove it hard almost got the little toy Honda to 120. Poor car so old but very reliable if took care of. Gotta love Toyota.

I got some free oil changes when I bought my Chevy truck and always had to lift it and remove afterwards. Last year I had the radiator flushed at a local mechanic and also had the oil changed. Same problem. This year I did it and added the required six quarts. Overfilled. I tried the suction trick and it doesn't work for me so I gave to lift it and get covered in oil again. Next time I will add five quarts and top it off.

My dipstick is heavily marked with oil up to the max line, meaning between the min and Max the oil on the dipstick is darker, while it's faintly showing above the max line, does that mean it's just about to much oil? And I should remove a bit? As well I'm assuming if I checked the engine when it's cold it's fissure going to be over when it's warm the engine? Lastly when adding oil after an oil change, am I supposed to add less being that the engine has some remannance of the old oil still stuck around the engine? If so why would the manufacturer recommends 6.4q when doing an oil change?

I bought a new oil filter and removed the filter to drain some of the oil. If I had to I would re-installed the old filter start it up, let it fill again then remove. That completely removes all overfilling. Afterwards I asked myself what was the point of me bringing my car to the shop for an oil change If I ended up doing all that. I should just change the oil myself but time restraints is a problem. I find most shops over fill I just don't get why. They all assume that cars take 5 quarts for some reason. Just too lazy for them to look up your car.

Drove home and the truck died. . wouldn't start. When it did start it would backfire and die. Got it home. Spent 3 days diagnosing. Couldn't figure it out. Finnaly one last gasp was my buddy said let's just change the oil....we drained out 9 quarts....the truck takes 4.97 .. we drained the oil fires right up , no issues. Been driving it daily since....we used synthetic and she is a solid truck altho she does burn a smidge of oil I just smell it because there is no cat and it's straighpiped... I overfilled my 2006 Subaru Forester. I didn't have a dip stick for awhile & my thinking was that it was better than not enough. It wasn't running well ( missing & blew some smoke out of the exhaust) it also seems to be leaking because it's smoking due to burning oil off the engine. I would really like to fix the car. Is there a possibility of major damage from this or is it as simple as draining the oil & replacing the spark plugs?

It's always better to be a little under than over. Foaming oil is a concern but the other problem is sucking oil up through your PCV system. Don't Over Fill. A half or near a half qt. over is way too much. Dealers have dipsh*t mechanics sometimes too. Always check your engine oil level when it is cold, not run that day. It's the only way to be sure all the oil that's going down to the oil pan is there so you get an accurate reading. If you are on the road and need to check engine oil hot, try to never add more oil beyond the 1/2 qt. low mark to ensure you don't overfill.

Interesting. I just bought a 3 year old Chevy from a Hyundai dealership and they did a full service on it before listing it. The new cabin air filter was demolished and the oil was over serviced by 2 quarts. I’m lucky to have 20 years of mechanic experience under my belt but if I were the average joe I would have waited until the next oil change cycle and probably would have some type of avoidable damage internally.

My younger brother had a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier that I borrowed while he was away with the military. I did a DIY oil change. I was getting two different answers for its oil capacity. Some said 4 quarts. Others said 5. The car had over 200,000 miles, and it was in super rough shape as a Wisconsin winter beater. There was also a ticking noise coming from the valve-train, but the budget wasn't enough to take care of it. When it was time for the oil change, I got Mobil1 High Mileage with a Mobil1 filter, thinking that the high mileage oil was appropriate given both the mileage and the questionable condition of the valve-train. I also figured better to chance an extra quart too much rather than risk a quart too low, so I dumped 5 quarts in. I drove from my buddy's house in De Pere to my parent's house in Oconto (38 miles) when the engine started running poorly. I still had another 23 miles to get to my grandparents' house in Marinette where I was living at the time. There was a noticeable loss of power, and the engine speed didn't want to stay high enough, so I brought it to my parents' house and left it there. They drove it through town for some errands for a couple days before the engine died all together. Whether the issue was too much oil, the bad valve-train, or a combination of the two, I never found out. Needless to say, my younger brother was not pleased with me when he returned home.

1/2 a quart is not enough to cause cavitation. Even a quart over shouldn't be an issue because the oil level drops a bit while running because it is in circulation. After a quart or so I would be concerned. I have had several vehicles make it past 500,000 miles. I always overfill slightly due to burnoff. All engines burn a little oil. Some older trucks burn a quart per 1100 miles as stated in the manual.

I did a quick oil change yesterday. My car tends to lose oil slowly over time. I check the stick and it was at min level. So I just switched the filter and added some oil and overfilled it. It ran maybe 5 minutes overfilled so I drained some and checked and it is right in the middle. However it still has a slightly rough idle after driving about 30 minutes total. Should I drain it all out and add some again or just wait for it to go away over time?

Even if it is 250ml, is it possible that it has caused some damage? As soon as I found out that they have put too much engine oil, they have removed the amount of 250ml engine oil. The vehicle was only driven for 140km. But still upto now no any faults or toruble from the vehicle. But I have rev up the engine, while driving 3-4 Rpm for speeding on highway. Hmmm I've never thought this to ever be something I'd worry about, typically it's short. How can I be sure this hasn't happened when buying a used vehicle? Can a mechanic/technician inspect to make sure an overfill has not damaged the engine. Or is that the risk buying used?

  • @heisenfeis

    @heisenfeis

    Жыл бұрын

The biggest risk buying used is people not changing oil at all. Some customers at my shop come in every 3 years or so or when they reach 20k miles or 30k KM because it says on the bottle of oil they use it is good for that range. even tho you should change oil every year regardless of how long you drive, heat and moisture is the killer of oil. Also NOT surprisingly their engines use oil because they do this practice. Some times I do a litte overfill for them because they never check their oil, so they dont get the oil lamp on in the next 3 years.

Here’s my dilemma: I bought a used tractor with a 3 cylinder Diesel engine. The oil dipstick in it is not the original factory dipstick! The tractor is a 67 model and various websites state different engine oil capacity. So one would say, check your owners manual. Which I have and I recently put the oil in by their recommended amount. (8 quarts) Others have done this as well but claims this amount registers way beyond the full mark on the factory dipstick. Considering my dipstick is not the original I would expect it not to line up just right. This is puzzling to me. Also I did notice the oil pan on this tractor is bent. I feel like this could be an issue of oil levels and could led to various other problems.

Also, if you consistently overfill your engine oil, you'll eventually have the excess oil seeping/leaking out through the crankshaft front or rear oil seals. A pain to fix as the gearbox & flywheel needs to be removed to change the rear oil seal. The front oil seal needs the timing chain to be removed... It gets pricey! 💰

I keep hearing that, but never saw someone has that issue in real life. Are you mechanic, is this a thing really? I hear people pour half a litter (half a quart) by purpose and drive like that for years. I really need an answer, since I bought a car, which after service was overfilled and I drove it 1,000km (~600miles) before noticed.

always had trouble with my old Toyota corolla if I took it in mid-winter for oil change, they would overfill it because it only took about 3.4 quarts, they just throw in 4 without looking at specs. All my cars have the amount of oil, viscosity, filter model number, and wrench needed for drain plug right on plastic cover over radiator when you open hood, so you don't have to look anything up.

If you are overfull just drain it to capacity. Why would you drive anytime with your oil overfull if it damages your engine? As far as how far it would take to do damage there are too many variables to ever give you a good answer. If you drove with overfilled oil for a period of time and are wondering the damage, the best way to check is at the bottom of the oil pan. Do you see many metal shavings in the pan? Then yes you damaged your engine by overfilling it. Make sure your oil is drained before dropping the pan. Also, you'll need to reseal the pan if you drop it.

a lot of shops, regardless if dealer or not, they don't let the oil drain completely, I've worked at a few shops, and a lot of guys there don't even let the oil even start dripping before plugging it back up. Then you pour in the "correct" amount of new oil in, it'll be overfilled because of the "excess" old oil. And non of those guys bother to check oil level after.

What happens if you overfill a car with oil? When too much oil is added, the level in the oil pan becomes too high. That allows a fast-moving lobed rod called the crankshaft to come into contact with the oil and essentially aerate it. The result is a foamy, frothy substance that cannot properly lubricate the engine

i overfill about 100ml-200ml at every oilchange. then again it's less of an issue with an integrated drysump lubricated 6 cylinder boxer engine. these in particular suffer more if the level is just ever so slightly under the "max" mark. that's why there's so many "deep sump" kits on the market for these cars, to increase the oilvolume by another 1-1,25liters. as far as i'm aware, overfilling a lot will damage the catalytic converters, because there will be more oil going past the pistonrings and into the combustionchamber. burnt oil will then cover the surface of the cat and make it ineffective.
