Omo's First Watermelon Smash (Kind Of)

Ойын-сауық

Four-month-old Nile hippo calf, Omo, is growing and learning every day. Although he's still nursing to get all of the nutrients he needs, he has started to explore solid foods. Because his parents, Zambezi and Biko, and his aunt, Kasai, love to smash watermelons, we couldn't resist seeing if Omo would be interested in this little melon, sized perfectly for our little hippo.

Our keepers say they have never seen aggression from our hippos. These hippos have built trusting relationships with their care team, so they don't feel the need to defend themselves from keepers. But, because of their size and their potential as wild animals with instincts, keepers only interact with them from the other side of a protective barrier, for everyone's safety.

No matter how aggressively dangerous hippos can be, you gotta admit those soft, large heads are really cute. You just wanna hold their giant muzzle, shake 'em a little and say, "who's a good puppy!" Luckily I know better than that, and zoo staff would be quick to stop me anyway.

Many people have outdated views of modern zoos, but the reality is that we do so much good for the animals in our care, and for species in the wild. Zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), including us, meet stringent animal management and care standards to achieve that accreditation, including living environments, social groupings, health, and nutrition. AZA also evaluates each accredited zoo’s involvement in conservation and education programs, among many others. Our veterinary team is involved with creating cutting-edge treatments for issues that affect not only our animals, but those in the wild, as well. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that receives no tax support. We have partnered with our guests to send more than $4.5 million since 2008 to help conserve wild species around the globe, and often send our staff experts into the field to help them, as well. We are proud to be part of the solution. As an accredited member of the AZA, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo participates in many Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs. These programs are run by species experts and involve the detailed tracking of species genetics for animals in human care. With global animal populations declining, many of these SSPS have helped to put animals back into the wild. Species such as the California condor, Wyoming toad, black-footed ferret, golden lion tamarin and scimitar horned Oryx would not exist in the wild today if it weren’t for zoo breeding programs. If you’re open to expanding your horizons, feel free to learn more about our Zoo at cmzoo.org/news.

You need to get with the times. Zoos and sanctuaries are now one in the same in many regards. Zoos handle the breeding, while sanctuaries handle the rehabbing. They can’t do it without the other anymore
