I feel like I ended Webtoon Week strong and with a really good video, so I'd really appreciate if you shared it with a friend you think would like it! I'm going on a break now. 7 consecutive days of uploads is already more than I ever envisioned myself doing, but the love, support, new subscribers, and all the comments I got really motivated me and made me feel like it was worthwhile. Thanks for everything, and until when next I return, this has been samuek607, logging out ❤

Hey @samuek607 , i want to ask you few questions. If you had the few bullet points that fully show what makes a OP protagonist good, great or perfect in your opinion what would it be? What are your thoughts on Ainz from Overlord as a OP protagonist? What would you think of the story in which not only a protagonist but also everyone around him was OP? And last question, what do you HATE and i mean ABSOLUTELY DESPISE about OP protagonists to the point you would want a person who made it first to be erased if not something worse?

dokja is overpowered in every way other than raw power, and i think that's what makes him so great. he's able to do crazy things like destroy the absolute throne because he has all sorts of loopholes and tricks up his sleeves, not necessarily because he just has the raw power to do it. that's why every time he succeeds it feels like a hard-earned victory. he's not just punching his problems away, he's doing all sorts of mental gymnastics and what not to survive all the time.

I think the thing I like about Dokja most as a protagonist is the way he feels realistic, despite the very unrealistic scenerio of the story. I enjoy the squad he forms through out the story and the way he interacts with the protagonist. He's not flawless, nor is he especially strong or good at fighting. His main weapon is his knowledge, intelligence, and finesse. He can't simply overpower the enemy, but he must find a way to out manouver them with the knowledge that he possesses....and he even makes mistakes along the way which have real consequences. As a novel reader, there's also quite a lot of backstory to this guy which makes him and his family dynamic REAL interesting, but will get to that once the manhwa adapts that part (which is pretty soon I believe)

I feel the same way, I love how he's given the kind of ability that should by all means let him coast through, but the story balances it out enough that he needs to be careful and witty about what to do because there are still real challenges and high enough opposition that he can't just get away with anything.

I especially like that KDJ (and by extension the rest of the main trio) just have that slight hint of bastard to them throughout. They develop well, but they’re all realistic in the fact that the number one goal is survival and are not afraid to take an “any means necessary” approach, even if it means acting counter to each other. (And this holds true in the late story as well when their bonds have developed well enough that they truly do want to fight for each other. It’s magnificent.) Thanks for the video!

ORV is the series you can truly appreciate only after you finish it. The novel is truly a masterpiece, deep with multiple pararells, complicated lore, foreshadowing, amazing world and character building. The webtoon is literally on the first arcs when barely anything happened so I get if someone doesnt like it, but the novel is soooo worth it. One thing that I love about ORV is that no matter how overpowered Kim Dokja gets (because he gets pretty high up there,) is that he's never quite at the top. There's always stakes to every fight and a lack of faith that he'll win because he *doesn't* win every fight. There's just as many fights that he wins as there are where things go completely wrong and leave Kim Dokja doing damage control. Yoo Joonghyuk is such an interesting commentary on the overpowered, bad mannered protagonist. He displays some of the negative characteristics of overpowered protagonists (over over powered, being an asshole), but it's used to turn him into a genuinely interesting side(?) character. Kim Dokja constantly needing and trying to manage him so he doesn't topple plans is so fun to watch. (referencing actual novel events after this. Spoilers.) Even after Dokja becomes a constellation; he's gains the attention of people far more powerful than him. In fact, after he becomes a constellation, he's at far more of a disadvantage than before because stronger nebulas are actively trying to get rid of him. Every battle is a struggle and Dokja has died so many times that you don't know if he'll do it again and have to find some alternate way to come back to his company. I absolutely adore how the stakes are always incredibly high. I spent the last 100 chapters on the edge of my seat, not completely sure how it would end or if the whole team (especially Dokja) would make it out intact. ORV is a great commentary on literary devices and it's a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster of stories in places, but that's the *point* and I love how the writers handle it.

Everything clicks into place well. And even though he can try his best to manipulate scenarios to his advantage, there's always a surprise, a change, an action he couldn't have expected. And it spices it up! That's when it gets interesting! Because it's not just his own life we have to worry about. It's all those other characters we've come to know too. Admittedly, the picture wasn't meant to be representative of that one specific instance, but the fact that he collects slaves at all, going all the way back to when he first bought Raphtalia. There are arguments for and against his decisions, but what I called him was "morally questionable"; that's something which is objective because he the fact is that he owns people, but I don't personally want to dive deeply into discussing so sensitive a topic.

@@samuek607 that’s fair, the act of him even considering to buy a slave was born out of his lack of trust in others after the events of the first impression he got and even in the context of the series it wasn’t meant to be seen as the right thing to do and the only person who even attempts to justify it is raphtalia who is admittedly a tad biased In other words it was designed to set a large contrast between his character at the very beginning and the kind of person he is now starting to become, specifically in the light novel the initial reason he chose raphtalia was because her eyes looked the same as the princess and at the time he believed all the creatures there were mindless beasts, it wasn’t until after he heard raphtalia scream in pain to the slave crest activating that he realized she was the same as a person and dismissed his previous plan, so yeah “morally questionable” is even a bit generous in my opinion but i do like that about his character how he was so corrupted by his hatred and how his susceptibility to that is further made apparent through the role the rage shield has in the story but he’s (usually) able to snap out of it and keep doing what he needs to do Sorry this kind of turned into a rant about me gushing over naofumi’s character, which is weird because I didn’t even know i liked naofumi that much until just now, I usually binge shield hero the same way I’d snack on potato chips

As someone who's read the novel I feel that my opinion of the series and kim dokja is different than others. The more you read and the deeper you get it just feels like kim dokja pulls stuff out of his ass. It sort of becomes something akin to kim dokja saying "by holding these two items I got 100 chapter ago and standing right here I can negate this effect." I feel like after reading other web novels with similar premises it just becomes more apparent. In other novels like authors pov where the person being reincarnated is the author of the novel they were placed into they still don't have such an in-depth understanding of the world and it's characters as kim dokja does. It's almost like kim dokja was reading a technical history book rather than a web novel. Another one of my issues that I have with Omni that authors pov does better is the story changing. The story changes drastically due to the appearance of a character who shouldn't exist which negates the authors understanding of what's going to happen and this happens early(-chp 100) and the story changes more and more from the authors original novel. This balances things and leaves the author scrambling to adapt and predict what's going to happen next. In Omni things change but it's limited to characters the scenarios are almost identical to what kim dokja has read, because of this kim dokja becomes an almost God like character. As the webtoon gets farther I think people are going to have a change in opinion and view kim dokja as an overpowers npc and the idolization of the story will diminish.

Kdj had read the novel for 13 years, he started in middle school and the Korean school system is different. The webtoon got that wrong, it was originally a novel. It said over a decade in the novel. Also please never call it omni-reader again, it's orv. One of the reasons it's so good it's because they are well developed character that each have their own motivations and the value they place on their own life fluctates. Plus people die all the time so kdj doesn't have plot armor cause he's constantly dying. (Sorta) another thing that makes it so good is the contrasts kdj, orv's protagonist with ways of survivals protagonist.

You completely oversimplified Goku and Saitama. Goku very often relies on the help of others to beat opponents stronger than him, not "just being strong enough" As shown in the Saiyan Arc. Goku had to literally sacrifice himself just to beat his older brother Raditz and even after more training and coming back stronger to fight Vegeta and Nappa he still needed help. Most of the Saga against Frieza where they repeatedly band together and use strategy to defeat him and only after become a Super Saiyan does Goku just out-skill and "ability" Frieza. And even then Goku constantly has to use Super Saiyan and sometimes even stronger transformations just to keep up with the other characters. Saying "Goku just happens to be strong enough to beat everyone and they had to keep making characters because he was too strong for the setting" is incredibly disingenuous. Plus blowing up the planet isn't the main largest threat since any of the characters can do that but it's more so the villains killing the characters and the people important to them. Which is sometimes done in giant blast. Not to mention you can literally down talk any story by saying "Oh well the protag was too strong so they made other strong characters/new concepts and characters with different battle strategies so it doesn't feel like it matters in the story" As if that doesn't happen in a TON of other stories. Including Omniscient Reader. And the point of OPM is Saitama being so good at what he does that it's effortless and therefore meaningless, and the meaninglessness extends to his actual life since his greatest dream and ambition he's worked years for is less meaningless than a hobby. He is far more than just a "comedic relief" character cause has more than gags, and has influenced/changed other characters and made them grow with his actions. Like Genos and Suiryu. And no one thinks Saitama can lose to the big bad cause well, it's called "One Punch Man" for a reason. And the fights of the characters who can actually get clapped/can't just one-shot everything is very interesting in the later part of the series cause you see how *they* overcome thing and live as heroes. Not to mention the nature of heroism is constantly "discussed" by the story itself what with how many characters have their own approach to heroism, strength of change and the world they live in. Also Naofumi is a defense based character who relies on the help of others and ingenuity to fight. How is he "OP"? (Also what did the having a rare and infallible power argument even amount to for most of the characters you criticize since: Everyone uses Ki in Dragon Ball and Naofumi isn't the only of the four heroes with a special weapon and even said weapons aren't perfect as Naofumi has outdone the others cause he actually works hard. And I don't need to explain Saitama so) So, yeah, terrible criticisms on those characters.

    1. I'm deeply sorry. The whole experience of my videos being seen by more than just my seven closest friends is new to me, and I'm sorry that my video has left so profound a negative impact on you. I apologise for failing to provide you with something you would enjoy despite you taking the time out of your day to watch my video in its entirety (which I do genuinely appreciate from the bottom of my heart). 2. I apologise again. In the interest of brevity, it is true that I was very sparing with details on several different accounts. This was done to try maintain a length of video that A: I could edit and upload without breaking schedule, and B: would not be so long as to deter potential viewers from giving it a chance (which is a major consideration for creators of my size). I should not have let these considerations come before telling a true story or painting a correct picture, and if I were to do so regardless, I should have given an appropriate disclaimer. 3. Thank you, not just for watching the video, but for your extensive remarks detailing precisely why you found issue with it. It would be impossible for me to learn from my mistakes and grow to get better without receiving the appropriate criticism; as the result of you spending what certainly was no small length of time to educate me, I will certainly be better in the future, and I truly am grateful for this. With all that being said, I did admit in the video that I did not always find fault with Goku. I said that I was perfectly fine with him through the original Dragon Ball, and this stands true for the Saiyan Saga as well because there is little difference in his ability at that point compared to the original dragon ball; in fact, outside of higher talent and better training making the Saiyan greater, once we took their tails out of the equation, they really weren't so different from normal humans, so Goku was just strong. But now, here's where you had an oversight which makes it seem like I was picking on Goku for just being better: you said everyone uses ki. Just as you said I was being disingenuous, the same applies for you there. Ki is the fighting style, that isn't what the insurmountable advantage is, Goku's race is. He's a Saiyan. Not everyone else can tap into the power of a new hair style or colour to match the succeeding villains like he can. That's why my problem begins with Frieza. Part of the argument I made for why this kind of character was a problem lies in that the growth they experience is so exponential that whichever opponent they end up facing at a given time will have to have some outrageous explanation for why they can actually threaten the MC, only for them to so quickly fall behind immediately after their defeat that it makes next to no narrative sense; the fact that this doesn't happen only once, but with every single villain is where the problem lies. Worse yet, this leaves the supporting cast to either become so worthless that they have nothing to contribute, or become the beneficiaries of illogical power boosts. Training regimens barely different to what they had been doing before end up yielding such tremendously different results that there is no good reason why that shouldn't be have been possible before. Example: Krillin's growth before the tournament of power. Naturally, growth is expected of a protagonist, but for it to persist so wantonly is awful for any respectable piece of writing. As for One Punch Man, I did indeed give a nod to how the method it uses to develop tension is via a shift in focus to the characters who aren't so overwhelming that they cannot be challenged. Saitama himself though? I shortened what his role as an MC was to comic relief because the story is at it's heart a parody. I neither claimed, nor believe that his individual character is shallow, that just wasn't what I was here to talk about, I was using him as an example to demonstrate what I meant by Over-Overpowered, and didn't wish to go into great detail discussing him because that wasn't the topic at hand. I didn't criticise him wrongly, I just didn't at all. As per my definition of Overpowered (one that is by no means absolute, but is my personal way of looking at it) the caveat to people being unable to compare with him is if they got their powers from the same source. In the broader world, outside of only 3 people, he is the holder of one of 4 weapons that (although yes, doesn't amount to anything without one's own efforts) puts him in a different realm from what the common man could ever achieve. Also, he fell into the category that I specified was a problem regardless of their exact degree of OP. They just have a number of character flaws that makes them very difficult to route for.

Man, a lot of isekai protagonists (not really a lot, but, like, some of them) get shafted by the anime so hard. Hajime from Arifureta in the novel actually has an arc (that got finished halfway through the story and the rest of the story is more of his character bouncing off of other characters that has yet to finish their story arc, which is quite fun to read) and Naofumi actually has a lot of internal (and external) conflict that was not properly expressed in the anime that show depth to the actions that he takes (Like the Atlas arc? That was sad af. The last third of the webnovel suck ass though. Dunno if the LN improved it or not). The phone guy... eh he doesn't have any arc. None of the other characters have any arc either. It's more like enjoying people making cool stuff (like mechs or gunblades, etc) and using them to kill extra-dimensional monsters for when you are tired and just wanna read something light- OH WAIT A MINUTE-

I would disagree about saying he is OP but not too OP. He is definitely way overpowered to the point it is silly. He does get challenged, but it is only to prove how OP he is at overcoming challenges. Right at the start of the story, it basically says he can't lose.

After reading the first few chapters on webtoon when they first got it. I looked up the light novel and man, it kinda put a sour taste in my mouth for the story. Like I couldn't continue with the manhwa because I knew the main character ends up just being an A-hole and my head was stuffed with over explanations on everything. Is it better as a comic? Should I give it another shot? Edit: after reading it again I think I was just reading a bad translation of the light novel, the webtoon is good, but I think the main problem is me. I just can't enjoy stories about OP characters. I try, hut it just gets boring after a while. Thank for the recommendation though :)

I didn't read the light novel, but the Webtoon hasn't been anything like that. Dokja has always remained humble and helpful, and I feel like the explanations haven't been overwhelming; they're usually well spread out, somewhat to the point, and his internal monologuing declines progressively. Anyone who thinks otherwise can chime in, but I feel like if this is a genre you usually enjoy, it's worth giving 15-20 chapters to feel out

the only annoying thing i found with kim dokja monologue is how he treats some characters as if they're not human and that he thinks he understands everything just because he read the novel. but personally i think those are intended for character development.

Nah... Imo, Kim Dokja is a good overpowered protagonist, because, despite being super overpowered, his goal isn't to win. His goal is to save / move in the right direction the other broken overpowered character. And if that said character says "no fck u i wont move".... Well, then Kim Dokja can't do shit! Despite being extremely overpowered.
