"if you're a strong woman, you're not" Cultivation really is a boiling pot of misogyny. I do find myself enjoying manhua for the "MC shows people just how strong/capable they are" scenes. But most of it isn't cultivation. I find cultivation to be way too much effort to be rewarding. The modern day setting manhua isn't as ridiculous so it lacks that "so bad, it's great quality". But I prefer my poison in doses.

When I looked at the cultivation genre with a female main character and mostly the storyline (probably the most popular) is basically this: I am a really talented doctor and I died and when I woke up as a idiotic weakly crippled daughter of some lord. Gets looked down upon by maids. The 2nd wife, stepmother or grandma hates me. Sister or cousin all hates me and has an affair with my fiance who also hates me. I meet some white haired dude or whatever who is sealed (or something) and freed them. ML gains interest BUT are stronger than the female lead. Which makes the fl a damsel in distress. Then the ml leaves for important business. The female lead solves problems and yay she is a bad bitch 😐. She gets looked down on and proves that they are strong which is a trope that gets overused a lot. The male lead is usually possessive, arrogant and stubborn little bastards who makes the FL be dependent on them. I feel like the female lead is kinda dumb, stubborn and arrogant despite being "smart." They also have some unimportant pet with them too. It gets too tiring and boring to try and read another one because so much cultivation manhwas basically have the same storyline.

They're all pretty much the same thing, and they get repetitive too. It's a very hard genre to like, and I'm glad you can see the problems it has too.

I dropped a lot of cultivation comics, same issues as you had. I usually drop after the first few chapters (how much it will suck can be hinted/revealed that early). I cannot endure hundreds of crap like you managed to do, haha. (It's remarkable that you were able to endure it~) For the ones I didn't drop...immediately... Most likely what's keeping me going is not the cultivation part haha. (they managed to have something epse to offer that make the series overall quite enjoyable/tolerable). Am happy that this video condemns the idea of treating women with disrespect. I seldom come across such. Thanks!

@@samuek607 I can't really recommend any good cultivation manhua/manhwa because I have yet to find a good one myself haha. To mention the titles I had in mind on the first comment... well, I didn't drop the following yet: The Grand Mudang Saga The Undefeatable Swordsman (The other one is BL) From the chapters I've read last time, they were pretty decent/enjoyable for me. Maybe you'll manage to read more chapters than me soon hehe. It will be helpful if you tell us/me if both/one of them turned out to be pretty good hehe. Advanced thanks~

I completely agree with what you said about how the cultivation genre is very misogynistic, the entire writing culture seems to be filled with problematic themes. For example almost every single xiaxia novel seems to try to justify genocide; with the justification ranging from a damsel in distress to a character insulting the main characters shoes or something. If someone is superior they are allowed to crush any who are inferior. You could write books longer than some of these 1000 chapter novels on the racist undertones.

More classist than racist except when it's racist than it's really really RACIST. like depicting non Chinese people or cultures as barbaric evil stupid incompetent or, my personal favorite, all of the above not to mention to objectionable morality of killing off entire clans because of the actions of the leader, that they had no say in, to prevent any possible future trouble regardless of if their innocent or not, which seems both hypocritical and stupid since the Mc already killed their strongest people and probably comited several regular/war crimes just to get their.

I honestly enjoy both types, obviously the wuxia is better but xiaxia have a lot of interesting concepts and world bulding that actually keep me interested. But I won't deny if manhua actually blew up for whatever reason like solo leveling did for manhwa then the anime/manga community would tear it apart lmao. What keeps me from dropping manhua all together is that sometimes I'll find a story that's somewhat unique and doesn't use every single trope others do but usually those ones aren't officially translated smh

There are a few manhua that I do read from time to time, but I'm not sure if they're really unique; I started reading those first, before I really knew about all of the tropes, so I can't judge them as fairly. (those would be Tales of Demons and God's, Star Martial God Technique, and The Last Human)

  • @darktigersharkmax4432

@@samuek607 I'm actually caught up on all three of those lmao. Todag was my first introduction to cultivation stories in general and in comparison to many others that try to copy it (since it's one of the most popular cultivation stories ever) it's much better but has some of the issues you described which makes sense since it's basically the grandfather of manhua. Star martial god technique came from the same creator of Todag so it has many of the same strengths todag had while not being a carbon copy however in one of the arcs the pacing was awful and almost ended horribly but luckily the story was continued past the light novels conclusion. The Last human is easily the worst out of these 3 while I do enjoy the fights and story it can drag in certain arcs and the art while fine is no where as good as the previous 2. If you're down for recommendations on manhua that imo don't have as many of the tropes or issues you have with the genre then I'll give you a list.

@@samuek607 Thanks for agreeing with me. Well I recommend Xian ni (renegade immortal), recods of the mystic gardens, master of gu, trample the rivers of immortality, and martial arts reigns. The first 4 aren't officially translated so if you're not the type to read scanlations whether you want to support the creators or get easily distracted by grammer errors (big or small) then don't mind them. Also Xian ni and master of gu are on hiatus and have been for years with no one knowing when they'll continue, I put them here despite this because I honestly think they're that good at least compared to all the trash out there but if you you aren't down to read stories that haven't been releasing chapters that's completely fair. As for martial arts reigns 85 chapters have been officaly translated while over 400+ chapters have already been translated by scanlation groups so just a heads up. If you give any of these a chance after going through the others you were recommended I hope you like them and see manhua can be at the bear minimum "ok" lmao.

As a person who voraciously reads, may I share my two cents? Cultivation is a very Chinese genre, one that unfortunately has the problem of not being easily translated. To a Chinese person (like me), the somewhat traditional prose and idioms make perfect sense. The names are exactly on point of the item or skill or whatever is being described. But when you try to say that in English, it gets awkward. It’s the equivalent of trying to directly translate “raining cats and dogs” to Chinese, while remaining tasteful of the wording. It’s more work than the average translator is paid to do. And it’s a shame because there’s so many beautiful names that only happen when cultivation is involved, but it’s a mess trying to say that in English. So yeah. It might not be the original author’s fault. The wording may never have been meant to be in English. Also, the cultivation genre is a much, much larger pool than the stuff that gets passed around. Yes, it is true that a lot of what you find when you search up the cultivation genre are novels or mangas thousands and thousands of chapters long with all the faults that you describe. I hate those with a burning passion just like you do. However, personally I have found, read and enjoyed a lot more online cultivation novels that genuinely make for a good read. But they’re 1. short (usually up to a few hundred chapters) 2. don’t get made into mangas and 3. never get translated into English. They’re there, but you would never find them if you didn’t know Chinese. And it pains me, because there’s the good stuff, yet only the rotten apples are circulated to the English community. If you would like an anecdote, a while back I read a novel about a demonic lord in a cultivation setting finding out that he’s a male supporting character in a book going to die a tragic death for the female main character. The actions of the main character in the book are so ridiculous that the demonic lord decides to figure out why the f things will happen the way they will in the book, and hopefully put the main character back on the right track. (He and the main character are connected by fate, somewhat like student and tutor, but explaining that will make this too long so well. I’ll leave it at that.) Ridiculous shit happens and it’s genuinely a fun (and touching) read. (Oh, and for those curious- no, he does not end up with the main character. This is a BL, so he ends up with his subordinate. The main character is fed up with romance and decides to remain single forever.)

One good cultivation novels I have read is "the great mage returns after 4000 years", genuinely likeable characters and a sensible progression that neither feels too fast or too slow, not only that however the women in the novel as far as I've seen have some sort of agency, and by god Frey is a fucking riot at times
