This song is supposed to be from the perspective of a prisoner being led to the gallows. The true strength of the song is that the song is meant to reflect the prisoner's walk towards their death (e.g. the drums resemble the rapidly increasing heartbeat, the mid-song riff meant to represent the prisoner having a change of thought and coming to terms with their death, etc). It is a masterpiece of a song.

the song also serves as a metaphore for the ostricization that metal heads have felt through the years. sure the song is talking about a guy going to the gallows , but it speaks to metal heads because of how the story reflects the outcast nature of metals heads at that time (up into modern times , which has seen a major change in the view of metal ).

@@DenverStarkey Not only that, but it's also that, back in the days, if you couldn't pay your rent, you'd either got put on a boat to Australia or what is now the US, or got hanged. The lines "Can it be that there's some sort of error" and "If there's a God then why has he let me go?" could be a good indication for that. But the metaphor really is in there too.

An even more interesting side note: One time, a bunch of British Nationals were stranded in (I think) Lebanon, and because of various diplomatic concerns, the British government "couldn't" do much to help them. SO BRUCE FUTHER MORKING DICKINSON flew his private jetliner (that he also flies around when they are touring sometimes) out there to go pick them up. What a lad.

@@mikewilson3581 i figured out what it is that makes his playing fluid , as a bass player is et out ten years ago to figure it out so i watched a lot of live performances of stuff i learned the music to , and realized how far the tabs get it so wrong. for example many tabs of his music will have him jump down to the 9th fret on the D string on a key change, but that same note at that same octave can be played off the 4th fret on the G-string. and it sounds identical when done so. the main trick is to play large note shifts across the strings not up and down the neck. it's more efficient finger movement although less flashy looking . also Bar what you can (fret two strings with one finger). honestly you'll note most professional bassist play this way versus jumping all over the neck it's just more professional in sound and fluidity.

In my home of Sweden Iron Maiden is a household name. Everyone knows someone who's a superfan. They sometimes even perform Maiden songs in the Swedish version of American Idol. But in America they never reached reached the same status.

That's exactly how we make em. It starts with a guitar riff, then we build up on that riff and when all the instrumental parts are done, then it's time for the lyrics.

Iron Maiden are metal royalty. I loved your reactions to this and The Trooper. You can react to any Maiden song, studio or live version but take the time to read the lyrics to understand the concept of the songs. Once you understand the inspiration behind the song, you'll realise how well the music and lyrics put the point across. Children of the Damned is another great track from this album. Derek Riggs painted the cover art...another living legend. Up the Irons!!! Edit: Please, please, please react to Iron Maiden's Flight of Icarus. This is a beast of a song and no-one ever reacts to it...massively under appreciated song

As a metal songwriter I can tell you basically how the process happens so when I write I can actually hear the music in my head before any lyrics are written then I try to produce on the instruments the rhythm and melody I hear in my head to fit the lyrics then the other instruments are added and the whole thing is then tweaked till the final product resembles the original idea hope this helps

If you get the chance you need to see them live! They still are amazing! They have an massive international following with virtually no radio airplay. Black Sabbath...Iron Maiden...Judas Priest the Holy Trinity of Old School OG Heavy Metal. You need to check out some Judas Priest. Go Old school with Victim of Changes or Beyond the Realms of Death. I ve been listening to these 3 bands for over 40 years! So glad you enjoy and can appreciate their music! Id also have to say you should check out Anthranx I am the man! Mix of rap and old school metal. And then check out Sevendust Terminator a bit newer! Keep the old metal alive!

I adore ...ADORE your bewilderment of this song and then your appreciation. You say "I didn't grow up listening to this stuff." But you know what? Yeah, you are now. And now that you've listened to it, now listen again while you read the lyrics. There is so much about history, mythology, war and fantasy. Wrath child, number of the beast and my favorite the trooper. There are honestly SO many good songs from them.

I’m always appreciative of people taking the time to delve into another musical style than the one they grew up with or they build themselves with. I am personally starting to take a liking for classic rap even though I was absolutely metal for 30 years plus. Actually get the real grasp of what that song is an iron maiden being led by a singer who’s got college education who is a bright man along with absolutely talented musicians make these been one of a kind and that is the reason their careers been spanning for over 35 years.
