For the car convo I agree with Martha. As a mom who has a new middle schooler this year, I want to avoid unnecessary hurt for him. No shoes don’t define him but if it helps him feel better, I’m down.

Yes, Martha knows because she has 5 kids and knows the pressure the kids go through. Also she’s not buying shoes to make them better than others, her kids know who they are and I'm sure Martha has raised them with an good understanding... Mary doesn't really understand because she doesn't have kids. I have 4 kids and I didn't buy expensive shoes, but if I did I would definitely get one pair of nice shoes..

Now Mary. We need you to explain to us how on one hand you like luxury and nice things but your kids have to bargain shop? 😂. You can still be humble and have nice things. You still teach and instill values regardless to whether they have on Target shoes or Jordans. Having Jordans doesn’t make kids bratty, poor parenting does. Love you both and appreciated the conversation! ❤

With so much peer pressure and mental illness going on, I do agree with Martha…it’s okay to have at least one pair of name brand shoes. Martha, you and Gordon do a great job with the girls teaching them the word of God so they will be fine.

We all agree that it was my opinion. I told her to do whatever she wants. 😅But, both perspectives are valid. I never stated that she had to do it my way, that would be absurd. But, just as she freely shares her opinions with me, I am able to do the same. We’ve built that type of relationship. And who knows, maybe my perspective will change when I have kids. But, for now that’s how I feel and she respected that, just as I respected her view. We don’t have to think the same way all the time🥰 Thanks for the birthday wishes 💕

These children are a different breed and bullying is real- no matter the reason so Martha I absolutely agree with everything especially with you being a parent and knowing you have a child in middle school. Pressures from other children their age is not just a brush off the back oh well you’re a child… if you’re a parent who can afford it and want to get your child that and you can experience luxury so can your child, but to each is their own ❤️

Happiest birthday to both of you. I am glad you both brought this discussion up. My 12yrs old is fighting the battle at school where kids call him ugly just by the stuff he wears. As much as I love helping get over it. I also make him understand that in this world we can never satisfy everyone. The people who say he is ugly are probably jealous of him or are going through stuff at home. Yes, I dress him up to boost his confidence but he understands that is not the source of his joy. His joy is in the Lord. It is heartbreaking to see your child go through peer rejection. So, Mary I love you but I promise you, you will change your perspective later on.. cheers!!!

I get both sides but Mary trust me when I tell you that you can impart & instill from the womb but when middle school drops, it's a whole new world. When my middle daughter, who is as humble as they come, started middle school, she was bullied to the point of several suicide attempts. Kids are cruel beyond words and whatever I could do to boost her confidence & self esteem I did. It's not about materialism at all. She loves God and others but kids are just unnecessarily cruel. As a mom you will do whatever you can to shield them from the arrows that will come. And Happy Birthday ladies! 🎉🎉🎉

Why do we feel our children have to struggle like we had to build strong character? Can we not teach them and develop them while still allowing them to have the things we enjoy ourselves? My children travel, wear Jordan’s, drink Starbucks and eat sushi and still know how to treat people well without feeling entitled. They learn what it takes to buy and earn these things. You can definitely do both.

Happy Birthday! 🎊 🎉 Since y’all asked for opinions, I don’t think one pair of Jordans will make the girls spoiled & entitled. I’m sure Martha & her husband don’t get the girls everything they want. They will still be balanced & humble with 1 pair of nice shoes. I think even 2 pairs of Jordan’s wouldn’t be bad. I also don’t think anything is wrong with exposing your children to different types of food like sushi or even taking them to see different countries if you can afford to.

  • @aleshapauley5610

I totally understand what both of you are saying. Please be mindful you have to do what you feel is best for you and your children. Rise your girls according to what you and your spouse feel is best for your household. Mary has to be mindful she doesn't have any children. You can say how and what you're going to do regarding raising your children. But until you have children you have no right to tell your loved one what she and her spouse should do when it comes to buying Jordan shoes for their daughters. I say this with love. Stay in your lane until you have children.

I love to see y’all together. I’m team Mary when it comes to the topic of shoes etc. for kids. I have never purchased shoes for my kids that were more than $70 (and that’s the high end). I had a high, middle schooler etc. both boys and the key is clean, no dirty shoes, fresh haircuts (my hubby cut their hair) and they didnt get teased for not having the latest shoes. I did buy Jordan’s for one of my sons but again they were on sale about $60 and def not the latest. Lastly, Martha your kids are going to be different and there is no way around it. As a believer, we often stand out bc we don’t do what others do, how we dress,, listen to provocative music etc. My kids have dealt more with that (I also have a daughter) than with having the latest shoes.

Happy birthday Ladies 🎉🎉. I'm a Mother of four daughters. Your car convo brought back memories of my girls when they were younger. I didn't want them to think/feel they were less important or less valued if they didn't have what others kid had/wore. My kids wore Nikes, reeboks, flats & dress shoes to school. I never purchase a pair of Jordans for them when they were in school. Now as adults they don't have a pair, it's not a big deal to them. Now I will say this, they were into having their hair braided and/or relaxed, smell goods/perfumes & wearing jeweler. I did provide those things without breaking the bank (thinking back they were mimicking mama😊). until this day as young adults they are still the same minus the relaxers. I sit back and think wow I really were my girls first role model.

My 2 cents on the Jordan's. If your girls like them/want them and you can afford them, get them. If they don't like them don't get them. If you can't afford them don't get them. Price point doesn't matter. Style does at any age. The foundation, confidence, etc all starts from the what has been instilled in them.

About the car convo: When parents focus on the brands...so will the children. Children are first influenced at home. When you instill in them good morals, humility, and an emphasis on education...thats where their focus will go. Buy the Jordans, buy Polo, buy whatever is going to be the best quality for the money. To the kids...these would just be clothes. Truly wealthy people buy what they like...the brand is what it is. They arent bragging on or focused on it being a particular brand. Make sure the children know that people who focus on such nonsense just to poke fun at others, are on the low end of the totum pole suffering from insecurities that they hide behind those brands with. ❤ Loved this vlog...love seeing you two together. I agree with Martha. Martha is SO modest and SO unassuming. But her heart is soft toward her children and I totally agree. Why set kids up to be teased if you can afford something moderately priced? Jordan’s are not super expensive. And Martha is only stating the fact that she has to buy her kids new shoes for school, so they might as well be Jordan’s. She will pay that much for any shoes anyway.

Happy Early Birthday Ladies. 🥳🥳 Yes Mary, I agree with Martha. And she is looking at it from both sides being a Mom and a Teacher. Times now are So different from back in the Day. The kids teasing you is on such a higher level than we had to endure. You get the shoes but also teach all those things that you talked about. And make sure they know that it's not owed to them. And let them know why you are allowing them to have them. It can be a teachable lesson also. But the line is a fine one. Making sure they are not spoiled but also be allowed to have the finer things. Not because it is In but because you want to Bless them with it. Mary you will understand even more when you have your children. Prayer is the way to go. And you Ladies got This. Martha keep up the Good Work. And Mary you will get your chance. Blessings Ladies. 🙏🏾

I' want to comment on the shoe conversation really quick. I understand both positions, but the Dove girls have been trained up in the way they should go. I don't see named brands distorting their views on who they are in Christ versus who society say they must be in order to fit in. Most kids want whatever is trending at the time, and that's ok, as long as parents are giving them what they need to become who God created them to be, and that's the Word of God. We know the Dove girls are getting that from both Martha and Gordon. Mary, the point you made is very valid, it's just that Martha's perspective hits different because she is a mom, and that's the biggest responsibility I believe a woman can ever have here in this life!! Happy birthday to my favorite twins!!

I have 2 boys but, starting school/pre k they both had the Jordans and the nice clothes....I just loved for my kids to look nice...this is because I could...I would donate and give the clothes away afterwards when they grew out of them...I look nice, so my kids will follow and I don't feel like that is a problem...some kids are cruel, period...no matter what.....God blessed me with great kids.....it's all in how you raise your children...my boys are now 20 and 25, no arrogance or entitlement at all/not brats....very respectful....I feel that you should do what works best for you and your family....I wish you both the best...😊

Happy birthday ladies! Both of you are making a good point; however, Martha is in the situation having kids transitioning to middle school. It’s a whole different mindset. It’s great that you are trying to see things from your children’s perspective. Teach them to appreciate what you get them so that they will be well grounded, but also get their view. Get them the shoes! And the braids.

I have seen kids not have the nicest things be the most confident people because their parents helped them build such a strong confidence and not need outside validation from others. I think that today, a lot of parents don’t and didn’t get that in their home lives so they were shaken or affected so much by outside pressure that they unintentionally end up raising their kids the same and try to protect them from that. Today’s society is full of hurt and broken people raising hurt and broken people. I am a mother of a 16 year old so I understand because it’s not easy either way.

Happy Birthday! I agree with you both. I agree with Martha these kids today are on another level and being able to give your kids access to more than you had growing up is a blessing. I also agree with Mary giving your kids everything without boundaries can plant a seed of entitlement. Its definitely a balance. And Martha in terms of food choices some of these kids today have it way better than us. I remember I was watching my little cousin and she was like 7-8, I made her breakfast: eggo waffles, sausage, eggs and apple juice. I thought it was good. She tells me her dad makes her bacon wrapped scallops. So sushi is definitely ok.

My Baby is 21 and is an interior architecture major at KU... she is just fine!!! BUT she does like having nice things... including having her own car that I pay for... but it's worth it to have her be able to focus on her studies and use her money for the little things and rent. So... they are going to be fine. You have built a great foundation with those babies. ❤

As a parent, it is definitely about balance with your children. You want them to have the best but and the acceptance of you peers is so important to them, but learning the value of earning something and being strong in who you are regardless of what others think is also very important. It takes lots of prayer and diligence on the part of the parents. I completely understood both perspectives and thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. I wish I could have been in the car with you two. 😊

Mary I am frugal but I am with Martha. Once the shoes not too expensive font sent your kids to school with shoes that they stick out. That will be one less worries or battle to deal with. Get the shoes at least for the bigger ones. If you can help your kids not to picked on or laughed at for one time Martha get the shoes.

Martha, I understand your point. It is so different from when we all were coming up. Peer pressure is serious. I believe you have instilled in your girls' strength, and they know who and whose they are. Unfortunately, going to a new school and middle school is a whole different ball game. As parents, we instill in our children all the morals and beliefs. Our children take that with them, and we hope they don't succumb to peer pressure. They'll be fine. And it is ok to purchase items they want.

I agree with Martha. Kids haven’t developed the tenacity to always “deal with it” especially in the world we live in today. There is nothing wrong with helping your kids not have to deal with unnecessary drama. Especially if they’re good kids. Withholding things from our kids because we didn’t have it growing up doesn’t have to be a given.. We get to give our kids what we didn’t have. And that’s OK. It’s not creating monsters if you teach them to value their things. Every generation should get better. We don’t have to pass on struggle. Also sushi is just a food. We just didn’t have access to it because the world was less interconnected in previous years. You shouldn’t have to “earn” good food. Creating healthy eating habits starts with exposure.

I agree with you Mary; how I balanced this with my kids is they had to earn the money to buy the things that they wanted so they understood that we all have to work to get the things we want in life. All chores had a monetary value and they were paid weekly. It took away the entitlement, taught them how to earn and balance their money. I often found, since they were spending their OWN money, they had less interest in the expensive stuff. They wanted more for their money. I would treat them to nice stuff for Christmas and birthdays within a reasonable spending limits. And you're right, kids will find something to bully a child about. They could be the best dressed and they will move to hair, weight complexion....SOMETHING! I am proud to say both of my children owned their own homes by the age of 26 by saving and investing because I taught them at an early age the importance of putting your money in things that grown vs. material things or things that depreciate in value.

If this is not me and my twin sister I don’t know who then lol I cracked up most of this video because its so relatable. I’m the twin in waiting while my sis is married with four children. From the nails to the spa to the car convo and the Netflix and chill I absolutely LOVEd this video. As far as the Ted Talk lol I see both sides. At the end of the day we only get one shot at parenting (my day hasn’t come yet) so you want to do well. Create rules that will enforce balance. So perhaps spurge once a quarter on the kids but set a budget and stick to it. Building confidence is found in knowing who you are which is in Christ alone. So carrying that knowledge in everything from appearance to education is key. Im of the belief , that when the crown is done, clothes are pressed, and confidence is high you are a force to be reckoned with. Anyway y’all are gorgeous and I pray you continue to flourish is this space. Happiest of Birthday ladies. 🥳🥳🥳

Martha you are rigth give the kids what they need in every form that their grow requires. Things will not make your kids act out just because they have nice stuffs or name brand things, but you as their Mother and Teacher you can teach them how to stay humble. What affect kids into bad behavior is no teaching and showing of example.

I feel like you get your girls what YOU want for them. Not because of pressure. If you can get it, get it. Mary can speak that way because her child hasn't asked for it. Her baby is going to have all the goodies. She also clearly doesn't shop for children in today's market. We have to really assess why we want our children to suffer thinking it is developing character. Wealthy children aren't forced to not have. How you raise your children determines how they relate to the world. That doesn't mean they won't ask for specific things.
