This is Good in terms of MJ’s catalog will be expose to more mainstream entities/platforms so you will hear MJ’s music more in commercials and MJ’s catalog will be more accessible than ever etc. & sorta Bad in terms of most Moonwalkers and even casuals will overreact not knowing the in’s & out’s of the situation at hand. Which is completely expected expectedly so knowing MJ fought so hard publicly against Sony Music Entertainment in the early 2000’s but most of those people he was fighting against that were employed at the time are no longer employed or either dead. So I wouldn’t exactly say we as Moonwalkers/MJ Fans should be worried in any sort of capacity MJ’s Legacy is already secured and more.✍🏽👑💯(Yea so it’s not bad but you’ll see folks take this and spend it to fit their own narratives. I’m just excited that the biopic will do so well and gain so many new MJ fans and reignite Michael Mania etc. so much so that his music will be distributed to so many different audiences and platforms. Michael Jackson Estate sucks: - MJ always fought to not have his catalog sold especially to Sony since they screwed him over in life - Instead of his Estate trying to release unreleased/unheard material (Music/Demos/rares) they'd rather give remixes I could go on because whoever oversees his estate, music, catalog, and etc is not doing a good job. They allow his personal items to be sold on the daily, haven't tried to do anything about the man several months back who stole a hard drive that contained unreleased music and Demos, and this might be a reach but why not get all that stuff back and make a museum for Michael? Prince has one same for a lot of great artists around the world. Michael Jackson deserves one

I don’t think so. I’m not an expert on this type of deals in the music business but Sony’s only bought 50% stake in Michael Jackson catalogue which means the Jackson estate controls the other half. Based on what the Jackson estate said, they definitely won’t lose control or rights to Michael’s entire catalogue, so I’m guessing whatever Sony wants to do with Michael’s music, they need approval from the Jackson estate. Also, from what I’ve gathered, it looks like Sony can help Michael’s music to reach a wider audience, especially a younger audience, via streaming platforms. The landscape of the music industry has changed so much since we were ushered into the streaming era so it’s important to incorporate streaming into marketing strategies of any artists these days. I think the Jackson estate was able to use some streaming platforms like Spotify to promote Michael’s music on their own but there’s only so much they can do without a big corporation’s help, like Sony. I guess we’ll have to wait and see but I think that with Sony’s involvement, I can safely guess that Michael’s music is likely to get better promoted on streaming platforms and also be more visible and accessible via commercials, sporting events, etc., not to mention better publicity in the media. I know Sony is a sore subject for Michael’s fans. I don’t like Sony either but sometimes you have to make compromises for promotion and marketing in the music business. At this point, what’s most important is to keep Michael’s legacy in the long run.

So you wonder why the Jackson estate didn’t wait until the release of the biopic next year. Also, when I heard about Sony’s interest in Michael’s catalogue for the first time, I thought they were going to pay at least $800 million (if not more). My guess is that despite Michael’s consistent popularity, his assets are still probably considered at risk because of the allegations brought on by Robson and Safechuck. I believe that Michael was innocent and was horribly vilified by the media but there’s still hates out there who believe otherwise. On top of that, Robson and Safechuck are going to go trial and the Jackson estate has to defend Michael’s legacy via their lawyers at court. I really hope that the Jackson estate wins but due to this crazy cultural climate that supports the “victims never lie” motto, it’s concerning how the trial is expected to turn out. Probably that’s why Sony paid $600 million only for 50% of Michael Jackson’s catalogue. The $600 million is still historic but in my opinion, the Jackson estate should’ve asked for more.
