@@patrickmeyer2802 uh, Petax comparison is kinda off IMO. Olympus cameras are more cutting edge than Pentax cameras. Maybe they changed only small bits with the new camera. But many of the small bits that sum up. Other than Panasonic or instance, they also have PDAF. The only issue is how much disrespect small sensor cameras have. Them not having that "professional look" with the soft creamy bokeh.

The camera is a fair upgrade of the EM1iii and a good first move from OMDS. But what really excites me is the new 40-150 f4 tele lens. That's much more important to me as a landscaper (although the new sensor is good as is the 6 stop ND feature) But the new lenses have received virtually no press! So I was really glad to see you had a few sample shots using it in your review. Thanks for that.

Great Job guys!! Having a look to its specs, I can also see unlimited video time recording , CK 60P RAW codec 4:4:4 Raw 12 bits for external video recordings. Also the Quad Pixel Bayer pattern sensor technology which is quite unique in the market. I really think this time OM System has made not only in terms of Photo specs, improving on 2 steps the noise/Iso ratio but mainly in video. Basically it is clear now that Olympus or OM SYSTEM is more than suitable for the big majority of photographers since it has improved quite a lot its quality, still keeping the unique portability and price advantage. 2.2K US$ for such a body isn't that expensive when compared to other similar and more "famous" cameras.

First, I always appreciate Chris and Jordan's reviews, honesty and guidance. Everyone talks (complains) about the small 20 MP sensor. It's my understanding that they really can't make bigger sensors for Micro 4/3 cameras without also redesigning all the lenses. The news sensor on this looks like it will improve a lot of the "limitations" of 4/3 such as low-light shooting and noise reduction. This is a monumental upgrade from my original OMD EM1, and I'll almost certainly stick with quirky Olympus/OM cameras.

Canon and Nikon halo bodies are built like tanks, and I doubt even the E-MX matches them. Below the ~6K USD bodies? I'm not sure about either the D850 or 5DIV, but I suspect they're as well built as the top m43 bodies. Given their size, they're probably not going to feel as dense as an E-M1IV or Fujifilm XT-4, but that's not a build quality indictment. Eh, I have no idea whether crop bodies are more durable etc., but I do love that spending a grand almost guaranties exceptional build quality.

This pretty much looks like my perfect camera system! I've been a Sony shooter for years now and I've always wanted better ibis and weather-sealing. Plus, full-frame lenses are just so big and expensive, it takes a lot of the joy out of photography for me. I do love the quality coming out of my Sony A7C but I honestly had more fun with the A6000 and tiny 16-50 kit lens. Being able to get this camera body with the two new lenses as a complete kit for all of my travel and adventures is extremely enticing! Under $4k, covers the 24-300 range at f/4 or better, very compact and light, sounds amazing! I'm perfectly happy with 20MP and the accompanying smaller file sizes. I really don't need better image quality, I need to get better at photography! Curious how well the eye AF works in video mode and I hope this camera has an interval timer/self-portrait mode built in. Hopefully this puts the pressure on other manufacturers to release an adventure line of cameras, like an AX line for Sony.

I hope Jordan tests its video capability in 4K/30P and use the HEVC H.265 format to see how that streaming compression works for KZread. Seems that will be more fitting for a Hybird mirrorless shooter seeking to shoot smooth fast action digital 4K video content. Shooting film style and 24p is great for film, but for a overall general purpose photo/hybrid in the digital age, the higher framerates are becomming the trend for the slow motion, and other digital camera movement techniques. I‘m really glad that OM is keeping M43 alive with this camera and it seems to come with some nice improvements. Just the sensor seems to be a bit slow given the fact that it is stacked. The specs actually sound a lot like those of the stacked 1” sensor Sony is putting in the RX100 series for years now. I wonder if Sony just scaled that up to M43. But I’m not complaining. For that price it’s still a great deal.

Good review! I love that we're getting more and more video options coming out now, outside of the big 3 of Canon, Sony and Panasonic; now that we have Nikon offering internal raw, and Fuji and OM Systems throwing in 10-bit. The reason why the colours were off in Rec2020 is because the primary colours are spaced further apart compared to Rec709, which means they're capturing more hues in-between. This is a huge benefit if you're grading it using a colour managed workflow, because then you can just use math to transform between Rec709, HLG, PQ, etc without having to do much manual work. Yes, it doesn't look as good if you're manually grading or using an old LUT, but the video industry is taking a step towards automation with colour management anyway (for the better), so I'd consider this a big improvement! Hopefully ACES and Resolve will add OM Log support 😩

As an E-M1 Mark II owner, the autofocus improvements are extremely welcome. But, to me, the bigger selling point is the improved video features. Now it has 4K 60p and 10-bit 4:2:2 (externally). Plus, did I hear it can shoot 1080p at 240 fps? I don't care about 6K or 24 megapixels. I've been saying for years that I just want a GH5 with phase-detect autofocus, and that's what it looks like we're getting here in many ways. Does it still have the 30-minute record limit? Hopefully not.

Because you need an external recorder to get 4:2:2 and ProRes RAW, it's especially disappointing that the camera still relies on micro HDMI. Also, as a person who uses DaVinci Resolve on Windows for editing, I would appreciate it if they would add support for Blackmagic RAW through the Blackmagic Video Assist. Of course, I would have to buy one of those in addition to buying the OM-1, but it would eventually trickle down to my amateur budget on the used market.

I know that a lot of people think this doesn't matter that much, and in many ways I agree, but I would still like to see a 43 megapixel om systems camera. I am very happy with my 20 megapixel E-M1 iii, but if an OM-1X (E-M1X ii) came out with 40+ megapixel, I would be willing to spend $3000+ for it. That being said, I think this is where OM needs to go. If they want to become one of the most sought after nature wildlife cameras, they will do 3 things to compete with Sony/Canon/Nikon: 1) Keep the similar performance to OM-1 (maybe 24 frames per second would suffice), 2) bump the megapixels to compete with the R5, and 3) keep putting an emphasis on improving video features. Look, I am extremely happy with what I have, but I want my investment to keep winning financially, and imagine how many people would prefer the lightweight portability of micro 4/3, but the detail and flexibility of having larger files for cropping, and higher res video and/or more video fidelity: i think this is the winning formula for OM, and micro 4/3 as a whole

There are pixel-peepers and there are the people who actually print, 40MP is ridiculously high for any real work. Double the MP is not the way, the ISO performance would honestly make it almost unusable. I don't mind using ISO 6400 or over with my E-M1X, but too much is too much. Maybe it's possible in 8-10 years, but not now. And for video, anything over 4K is overkill, most videos are watched on smaller screens nowadays where the resolution is usually only 1080p. Really the only things I want from Olympus is far better marketing and updates to their older lenses, e.g. the 300mm F4 is already 6 years old (but still fantastic) If you need to crop wildlife with MFT, simply get closer (or your lens is way, way too short).

PDAF H265 HLG 10bit (4:2:0 not 4:2:2, right?), what bitrates are possible here? Dual SD card slots Unlimited 4K60 recording This is very tempting! I hate that GH6 doesn't PDAF, ended Dual SD (because of that expensive un-redundant CF Express Type-B slot taking over one SD card slot!!) Sure I understand GH6 doing ProRes internal, 5.7K60p, 4K120p, 4K60 10bit with 4:2:2 and etc it can make sense for some people, but I don't think I need those. I just wanted Panasonic to fix their AF to use PDAF and to slightly upgrade the 4K60 to 10bit 4:2:2 internally. It seems Panasonic has not. So possibly, depending how those video features actually look like, Om-1 is interesting! I wonder if any quality difference between the 12-40mm mark1 and the mark2 for video and in terms of autofocus performance, sharpness or anything like that. I don't really think I want to film in the rain if I might be able to find a 12-40mm second hand for cheap. Or if I can just stick to using my Leica 12-60 with this Om-1 and have just as good PDAF performance and just as good if not better IBIS when shooting 4K60?

Why would you guys ask for more mpx? I'm still shooting with 16, and that is honestly fine for pretty much any imagery I make, including print. Honestly, 20 is probably just fine. I have some superb prints from my original E-M1 and from my original Canon 7D, both of which are under 20 mpx. Now, my EOS R offers considerably more, which is nice for cropping, but if you're an experienced and careful photographer, which I am, other than very modest crops to finesse, an image, I very very rarely need to crop at all. Keeping mpx lower means that you're trading off some compositional buffer room for better per pixel performance, which seems reasonable in most normal shooting scenarios. Otherwise, I enjoyed the review. Seemed pretty balanced with a nice broad look at the new model.
