Yeah I've got a gimbal for a smartphone as well. I can hear the motor noise which is really annoying but it's a couple years old so maybe new ones are better. TG5 is in some ways worse than a smartphone because its sensor is the same size as high end smartphones and it has a slower lens.

I was wandering about getting a6500 for shooting videos but after careful consideration I got LG v20 for 250 pounds i.e. around 300 dollars instead. Shooting abouve ISO 200 useless but does what I wanted and I saved 3000 dollars, and gimbal I bought ZHIYUN was 60 dollars ( second hand form amazon) if I wanted a good gimbal for a6500 probably 100 dollars. By the time v20 is dead thare are going to be other mobiles that does the job quite well. Thanks for this review, it was a lot more comprehensive than many of the others I've seen here on KZread! Nice work! How was the auto-focus performance when taking stills? Do you think it might be difficult to use for someone that is more accustomed to having greater control over their camera settings? I have a Pentax DSLR, which I love, but I'd like to have a rugged camera I can keep with me at all times and I'm seriously considering purchasing the TG-5 for that purpose! Cheers!

Ok first things first. TG5 Noisy and shaky zoom, MOV. files , noisy sensor in low light. AS far as I know the only competition is W300. I used Nikon AW100 for more than 3 years and I suppose that W300 has the same problems as the matrix is the same only new CPU but I had loads of problems with focusing my w100 when zooming while taking video. TG5 is better here will refocus and can shoot focused videos and thake pictures form zero distance. TG5 has this brilliant bayonet solution for add-ons like flash for makros and wide angle and zoom lenses. Overall if you are used to DSLR's you should find using TG 5 extremely easy just point and shoot TO ANSWER YOU QUESTION autofocus when taking stills is good, very good - in good and average light, in very low light you have manual focus that you can use but you will not need that. I wanted to buy an upgrade form my aw100 and I thought about getting TG5 or W300 finally I bought LG V20 and I am very happy. My AW100 for ocean/water use and my LG v20 for everything else.

Always at your service to add the story up W300 Vs TG5 TG5 has fully manual white balance and you know that it is extremely important and TG5 has electronically controlled auto focus. I did not have w300 but the AW100 series had problem with focusing during filming no problem for taking pictures but when shooting video TG5 has better focus. The only annoying thing about TG5 is the shaky and noisy focus and battery access. If you have any questions just ask, will be happy to be helpful. Very good review. Lots of good information. How is the stabilization on the TG-5 when you for example walk/jump/sport? I don't know if I should get the w300 or TG-5 as I want a camera for action filming aswell.

Thx mate. To answer you question consider these facts: TG 5 - Advantages Better macro with this extended macro focus mode simply spectacular Better focus, will focus after zooming. Good accessory kit available as add-ons great bayonet socket Manual WB and Manual focus with focus peaking Shoots RAW Disadvantages Loud and shaky zoom Stupid battery housing, one has to remove camera form tripod to change battery, no external battery charger. Bigger than Nikon w300 More complicated to use than W300 Loads noise form sensor above ISO 200. If I was to buy W300 or TG 5 to be my main camera, you know simply camera for everything family events, hike photo video recordings, some artistic photography I would definitely go for TG5 almost everything available in manual + it shoots Olympus RAW format. If I was to by W300 or TG5 to be my secondary sport action camera I would definitely go for W300 much easier to use in hardcore conditions like snow/water, action etc. W300 is lighter handier and easier to use. Overall TG5 is a better camera but for sports/action stuff W300 is a winner. Think what you really need, if you have less action but more artistic soul TG5 would be for you and remember that you can always buy some extras for the camera like tele lense, wide angle and filters. Nikon lapsed lense adaptors after AW110 so no extras available for W300. Let me konw what was your final choice and all best take loads of great photos and videos.

Oh I have forgotten about one thing I used Nikon W100 series for a number of years as a main camera for everything. A couple of months ago I got LG V20 nad I shoot 99% of my videos with it. Low performance in Low light but apart form that much better than any camera available on the market. Brilliant manual mode fully live if you know what I mean. I use mu Nikon only for action/ ocean / snow videos. Mobile phones has great performance now consider LG v20 you can buy it for 300$ now used to be 1000$ last year. Write me where are you form I might find you a good alternative.

I got one of these cams myself and I must admit, 4k video battery life is nothing to write about. I have not done any 4K tests on a fresh battery to see what kind of life is plausible but I'd recommend for anyone interested in this camera for 4k, you might want something else. Otherwise, its jam packed with goodies and I take it everywhere I go!

Thx for sharing your experiance, I used to use Aw100 two of them for about 3,4 maybe almost 5 year. I was very happy with that camera. I thought about upgrading for TG5 but luckily a friend of mime bought one so I could have done a review. Considering all pros and cons I decided not to buy this camera as difference between AW100 and TG5 is not as big as I thought. TG5's macro is fantastic simply fully kick ass ;). Then I thought about getting a6500 but I would have to get glass for it and some other stuff and I would almost spend 3000 dollars. I considered all the options with a friend of mine and my final decision was LG V20 for around 300 $ new form ebuy sent form france. And here is the video that made my decision: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oHWoypqgYJjaltY.html TG5 as well as LG v20 low light performance is let's be honest shi... but in good light, they are good but shooting with a smartphone is much much easier and better than any DSLR or advanced mirrorless camera or waterproof TG5 style, I hope than in a year or 2 smartphones will give us as much as best DSLR's or a6500 gives. The LG V30 is quite an impressive phone! But no matter how good it is, its still going to have its limitation. I remember watching a video where someone was using the Iphone7, and even though the end result was very impressive, the point of the video was to show behind the scene of how they got it to work and how much more work it really ended up being. Impressive, but not ever going to replace dedicated gear. But with that said, something you can carry with you everywhere you go has to speak volumes too. Most people wont do color grading or anything like that.

I shoot off of a T5i and the TG-5 and waiting for a good holiday sale and getting the GH5. I agreed that the DSLR market has been shrinking since the improvements of cell phone cameras but I don't think they will go away completely. I think there will be much fewer entry level choices and more expensive professional quality options. The KZread thing is only going to grow and I think within a decade it will take a chunk out of cable TV and services like Netfix programing. More choices of things to watch on KZread vs TV, and once you find your favorite content producers, you almost feel like your getting to know them in a way you just don't get with TV. I think companies like Canon have been struggling the last few years cause they are not quite as quick to anticipate and make products for the KZread generations. Panasonic seems to be getting it and I think the other guys are going to catch on very soon too. And when they do, the Power in a DSLR body/lens combo for the cost is going to make major leaps and leave the cellphones in the dust again.

Everytime I post my TG-5 pictures to social media, the words OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA is displayed under each photo. This is extremely maddening! As I then have to delete this off my posts. Is there a way I can disable this logo from appearing?

Please check the date under the video. I shoot with mobile myself with LG V20. Times have already changed. I still have my aw100 for underwater pictures but for 99.99 % of the time I use my mobile. Compact camera market is dead as well as DSLR's. Only mobiles and mirorless left. Remember that the video was shot a good couple of months ago. At the moment I am shooting most of my videos with LG V20. Cheaper, more versitility, not waterproof apart form that great camera and mobile ;) and it is cheap so if you do not want something that is waterproof go for LG V20 if you need waterproof camera this one seems to be the best option on the market and you can get zoom and wide angle lenses for it as well.

If you're going to review a camera, have it in your possession for more than a few hours. You cannot possibly give an accurate, informed review if you have only ever used it for a few hours.

Don't worry mate, no offence taken. You can always use HTML 5 you can slow it down or speed it up with youtube or even better turn the subtitles on and switch audio off. Just to sum up, good camera, but slow focus during taking videos, ok with photos. Noisy and shaky and slow zoom. mov. video files that give some problems if you don't know how to deal with them.
