I own this lens (the only lens not the Olympus Pro lineup. I think it's good for it's price) It's was super sharp when it nail the focus , But some of the time, about 20% of my image was not in perfect focus cause you think the image was soft)

Low light performance is a lot different on the 300mm f4 and the 150-400mm though. Especially paired with om-1. It's our 100-400mm that is the lowlight problem, not the camera or sensor.

I've been doing a back-to-back comparison against the 300mm F4 for bird photography. Even in good light, and set to 350mm, the 100-400 telephoto is very poor by comparison. In good light, I was getting much better results, not just from the 300mm F4 but also from the 40-150mm F2.8 with a 2x teleconverter. I wanted the versatility of the zoom as a one-lens solution for wildlife, but it's just not good enough.

Btw, remember to upgrade the firmware. It helps a lot on the focus, especially when using video.

Have you used adapted Canon EF zoom lenses on the OM1? If so how do they perform (with or without a TC)? I have a LUMIX G9 and 70-200mm f2.8L IS and 1.4TC. Obviously the G9 isn’t fantastic for AF and I only have a speed booster adapter, not a plain electronic / smart adapter. I’m interested to know how the PDAF MFT cameras perform with adapted lenses.

This lens works better on the EM1.2 and EM1.3 than on the OM-1. Yes, I know from a personal experience. Skip the OM-1 and get a good used EM1.3. This lens is much better than the Panasonic 100-400, too. I had that one.

You're right, the 100-400 is a lens that requires enough light. Personally, I'm using instead my Leica 200mm 2.8 otherwise. That said, did you tried softwares like DxO to deal with noise? The results could be amazing.

Nice lens! Yeah I use Topaz to reduce the noise, but sometimes the noise is just too much

Regarding the hit rate. The new OM1 struggles in low light (The Autofocus that is). This is not an issue on the older models, EM1- Mark III. I use the EM1- Mark III with a Metabones and Canon glass. Pretty fast AF, not same level as Sony Metabones adapter to EF glass. But not bad.

@@Blinsaff I have the newer camera too experiencing the same issue. They need to fix it with hopefully firmware update. But I do agree that lens is soft at full focal length and colors are not that great. I have a olympus 60mm macro lens 2.8, it's not telephoto but the colors the sharpness is amazing.

I have an EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS and a TC1.4. I’m interested to learn how it performs on my G9. I have a speed booster 0.71 not a plain smart adapter. The 0.71 hunts and I’m not sure whether that is the camera or adapter or lens! I’m hoping the combination with a non-speedboosted adapter is ‘good enough’ so I can avoid buying a telephoto from LUMIX / OMS!

There comes a point when there just ISNT enough light, unless you are shooting a statue. No lens can help you. This is when you grab a flash with a fresnel multiplier/extender. Magmod or Better beamer

Thanks for an informative video! I just bought this lens and I am excited to use it very soon with my OM-1. I did wonder though, on your video where you showed unfocused birds in flight whether you should’ve just manually focused to infinity. Isn’t that where you most use a telephoto lens?

  • @Blinsaff

    @Blinsaff

Thanks for watching! Yes and no. These were shot in tricky conditions - small fast moving birds, at a very long distance. I’m not that great manually focusing at those conditions so relied on the auto focus instead. Closer the bird though the better, especially at that location. Even my full frame cameras struggle at that same location. In the majority of cases the auto focus is rock solid though.

@@Blinsaff If the birds were at a very long distance, the unfocused bird shoot would not have been unfocused if you had it set to infinity & @ manual mode, no? All I can assume is that you were stalking many options at differing distances so manual would not do for those other shots. Let me know if this assumption is incorrect please and thanks for chatting.

@@nixl3518 that would be right. I could have used manual @ infinity, but those birds are small, fast and low flyers. So, difficult to do. Auto focus worked ok, just not 100%. …Well, that’s my excuse anyway! Hah!

I had the Olympus 100-400mm for a while but was pretty underwhemled. The size is very similar to the Olympus 300mm, but without the image quality and lower light performance. When compared to the Leica 100-400mm - the main advantages are the much smoother zoom (leica is stiff) and ability to use teleconverters. But the Olympus lens is significantly bigger, and also seems to have worse stabilisation. In regard to size - the Leica seems to be okay using a camera strap on the body, whereas on the Olympus you really need to attach a strap to the tripod foot. Additionally - The Leica can be picked up pretty cheap on the second hand market. I got mine for $800 AUD. I've ended up using the Olympus 300mm for specific birding photo excursion - and the Leica 100-400mm for when I go walking, canoeing etc. I think if you were only going to have one long telephoto - then maybe the Olympus 100-400mm is a better overall compromise than the Leica 100-400mm. Especially for semi-macro with teleconverters. However, I've found that if you are using as a second "kayak lens" then Leica 100-400mm is better compromise.

  • @Blinsaff

Interesting. I was put off from the Leica as there are no teleconverters for it, plus the stiff zooming.. and I guess the cost. Glad to hear it's a better alternative and it's working for you. I've given up on my Olympus 100-400 and sold it. Might have to check out the 2nd hand market for that Leica though..

I found that the lens stabilization will delay activate if the camera tilt up or down. The delayed time around 1 to 3 seconds, more the tilting angle more the time delay. I went to customer service and got answer that is ture. They don't know can it be fix by FW update. The only solution is turn off the lens IS and use the in-body IS. Sad
