I don't know, you guys. This Tendou character is still really giving me the creeps. His guess blocking strategy is only partially effective, too, so I need to see a bit more before he can even think about growing on me.
I will say that I am loving this Tsukishima swagger I'm seeing coming out. Our boy is growing and is using his sass for good!! I love to see it 😍

    I mean, the best way is he blocks a lot on feelings. Like that last rally, the momentum finally went to Karasuno after receiving Ushijima and usually they'd go for their ace to pick up morale, so he moved towards Asahi before Kageyama tossed. He usually moves to block before the set.

    A trivia about Tendou's song. The melody of the song was come up by his VA himself. One day the director just gave him the lyrics and told him to "sing however you like". I love the VA's creativity and how the director creating opportunities to him, proving that voice actors aren't just people reading scripts but sometimes their adlibs also make memorable impacts.

    You're quite spot-on when calling Shiratorizawa a team of individuals - Ukai also called them "the most incomplete" team and one that uses "addition" instead of "multiplication" (regarding players' strengths), while most teams strive for the opposite! Now that you pointed out just how weird "don't forget to pass to Wakatoshi" sounded from Semi, I decided to check the original - the manga translated this part better: "Keep in mind how often you should send the ball to Wakatoshi-kun". This is pretty close to the original Japanese line; if anything, Semi might be suggesting to toss a bit less to Ushijima (but that's just my interpretation). The final toss to Tsukishima always makes me a tiny bit emotional, because it goes to show that Kageyama also trusts him more now to put away such an important ball :")

    The reason we like Tendo is just that he's a little ball of chaos. He shows his emotions on his sleeves, he's enjoying the game, he brings the energy up, whether he's riling or hyping other people up. He's just really fun to watch. While everyone else is in the headspace of serious gameplay and trying to win, Tendo's just trying to have a good time. Sure, he can get a tiny bit pouty when he doesn't, but he quickly rebounds and brings even more enthusiasm to the table. He's a single point of perkiness and liveliness in a team that's generally pretty muted in the expression of their emotions.

    Tendou is here partially to be a foil for Tsuki. So what tendou does is defnitely at least partially read blocking and he's pretty good at it. He ust supplements it with his "guesses". This is mainly to contrast against Tsuki who his borhter said last episode "Only believes what his own eyes see" Tsuki also focuses more on setting up plays for his teammates where tendou focuses almost purely on scoring points

  • @SarahPavanVolleyball

    @SarahPavanVolleyball

    Ok I like this explanation. Thank you! You can definitely see the conflict between the two of them developing, especially when Tendou says, "Oh here's the normal one" and then Tsukki scores and says it rights back to him. Love that!

  • @adeleedyrssen589

    @adeleedyrssen589

    I almost feel like Tendou considers his own blocking style to be guess blocking, but it really is more like early read blocking. He reads people and seems to almost unconsciously read players so well that he can “guess” where the set will go. So because of his own thought process and how it appears to the audience it looks like he is simply guessing.

  • @robertcampbell8070

    @robertcampbell8070

    Жыл бұрын

    The other thing to remember is Tendou thinks blocking isn't fun if you don't score points from it. So he tries to kill block EVERYTHING. He doesn't narrow the hitting lane or cut down the angle or anything else to help the defense behind him. He'd rather score 5 points off kill blocks even if it means giving up 5 points on the balls he misses. In that sense he's the exact opposite of Tsukki. Tsukki almost never tries for kill blocks if it will hurt team defense.

    You are correct with Shiratorizawa, that is why in the preamble Coach Ukai said that Shiratorizawa's play style is by straight addition, whereas the opposite would be similar to Aoba Johsai which was about multiplication. But Shiratorizawa 's strength of addition comes from how strong each of those individual players are.

    Quick note on what Semi (the grey-haired Suga lookalike on Shiratorizawa) says to Shirabu (the main Shiratorizawa setter): I think that’s actually a mistranslation! What Semi is actually saying is something closer to like, “Be aware of how much you’re setting Wakatoshi,” (kind of implying that he should remember to set to the other players as well), since Shirabu, as you pointed out, definitely loves setting Ushijima lmao. In a country Like Japan where people try to not stand out from the Mass Is particulary brave for tendou to not negate himself. That's also represented in his style of play. He doesn't want to negate himself and he shows It refusing to change his playstyle to a more canonic One. He Just enjoys being himself.

It's like how some kids are able to skip a few steps during maths class and still arrive at the correct solution because they understand it unconsciously and don't need to take the time between seeing and thinking before acting. Also Saltyshima turning his snark against the opposing team is so satisfying lmao XD For all the grief and roasts he dishes out against his own teammates, he really is giving his all in this match and it was amazing to see him control the block and all their plays coming together to hinder Ushijima :D

    Omg Sarah!!! That whole rally was HEART-STOPPING (as is this whole season!) and your excited breakdown just further extended my squee. I love the “normal guy” exchange - such an evil delight when Tsukki trolls other teams. And now he’s taking charge! All aboard the Tsukki love train! Btw I love the little cartoons of you, did your editor do them?

    It might be frustrating seeing Ushiwaka score a lot, but remember they are in high school and he is one of the top 3 spikers in the country. At this point in the story, he already is apart of Japan's under-19 national team. His overwhelming strength is his greatest factor. You don't really need to aim the ball when spiking when your 3x stronger than everyone else. If he kept getting block, then he would reconsider, but no one on Karasuno has shown that same level of raw strength. The one touches are probably annoying tho.

    That last rally was THE turning point for this match. Just based on the first set it seemed like Karasuno was too far behind in ability to win the match, but they adjusted to Shiratorizawa’s abilities and weirdness, and now they have fighting chance

    Very good point on how each school work. The crows work with each other, basically multiplying their success via complimenting each other and using various team plays to point wherein Shiratorizawa works like an addition, they have skilled individual players that just adds on each other making them a strong team of strong individual players.

    Nice video as always loved it Btw “Don’t forget to pass to Wakatoshi” is completely wrong translation. He actually said “Consider the distribution to Wakatoshi”. Possibly meaning don’t give him too many times or something. The starter setter for Shiratorizawa is 2nd year and the grey hair guy is actually 3rd year setter.

    I personally think that Shiratorizawa being a team of individuals is due to their coach being more of a training coach than a coach that makes plays and tactics. Their coach just make his players pretty good.

  • @s_lasgalen

    @s_lasgalen

    Washijo is one of the most interesting cases of coaches in Haikyuu. He's definitely capable of training strong and successful players, he has the knowledge and skill to be an athletic coach who knows exactly what they need physically. But mentally he's not ready to be a team coach because that means being open to evolution, changes and modifications. Washijo isn't a bad coach but he is close-minded and stuck on this idea of a star player surrounded by strong support without much diversity. The problem about Shiratorizawa is being too dependent on their ace. Nobody lasts forever and when Washijo will lose his golden boy, he'll just pick a different star to groom into being an ace (*cough* Goshiki *cough*). There's a team that's the opposite of Shiratorizawa, or more like a parallel - its Fukurodani. Their star ace is too dependent on his team and while Shiratorizawa players know that their sole purpose is to clear the path for Ushijima, in Fukurodani the players are kinda stuck with picking Bokuto up every time he falls and don't have that much freedom because of it. Without spoilers, I feel like Bokuto would have trouble playing on a team that doesn't completely devote themselves to being his support and needs to learn to actually stand on his own while Ushijima needs to learn that he shouldn't bear the entire team on his shoulders. Washijo just needs to stop drooling over his best boy and focus on the other tons of kids he has on the team. Also I would die for a match between Shiratorizawa and Fukurodani but without their aces in game at all.

    I agree in the sense that a team's culture often develops from what their coaches value. If a coach values individual strengths, then that is often what will be seen. In a sport like volleyball, however, it is tough to be successful at the highest levels without the "big team" approach.
