I live in a relatively wet ecosystem, so I don't really need ollas, but I've found that growing some of my garden plants in partially buried terracotta pots is doubly useful. For one thing, I can grow plants that like warmth and dryness a bit more (like peppers) in the pots, so the have a bit of an advantage in the rain. But also, when we have a dry spell, I can water into the pots directly, which then act like ollas for the plants in the ground. The real advantage here is that if I can keep my surface mulch a little drier, I don't have to worry about slugs nearly as much, and there are always a ton of slugs. Cool video dude. Keep it up!

While hiking in Anza Borrego, I came across a pot that I now realize was an olla. I knew it was a pot, but I didn’t know what it was used for. Thank you for explaining.

i know I'm 10 years late but, God this is very informative and inspirational

I made my first olla from an unglazed terra cotta pot, sealing a piece of broken tile over the hole (from the inside) with a little wet cement, and then adding cement to cover over that little tile and out to the edges of the pot (smoothing it with my finger to make sure it's sealed nicely). Then I used the terra cotta lid to set on top. I got that idea from youtube last year. I guess that sealing two together would give you a lot more water capacity, but I don't really need that much in my little raised bed garden. I’ve JUST discovered this, and as a New Mexico native, that is sad. I’m moving in two weeks, and I’ve done a ton of research on this and permaculture and chickens. I’m dumbstruck at how I’ve been wasting energy which I then go purchase from the store. Also, there are very cheap terra cotta pots that have no drain hole. And the trays that can go under one size pot, will be a nice lid for the next size pot. ✌️

Most awesome ollas video! I wish every explainer video was as good! Of course not the torturous music. For that you could face the death penalty in many small countries.

alright the music is definitely annoying. I haven't watched this in a few years. it was a final project for a class I was taking and, of course, I put everything off until the last minute. stayed up 48 hours doing the project, things got weird. I needed music at the end, didn't want to use cheesy royalty - free music so I made some weird sounds. listening to it now, I can feel how weird my headspace was while creating the movie, I don't know why I didn't do a guitar track like in other films of mine. I understand that it is distracting. I'm sorry. I'm not gonna do the George Lucas re-release, we'll have to live with it. Thanks for watching anyways!

I use the buried clay pot from Home Depot method. Use a saucer for a lid. Very easy to check on the water level. I used marine safe tape to seal the hole. If it's ok for aqua life should be ok for the garden. 🙂

If anyone is in Central FL, we have a local potter who sells ollas at Green Umbrella in Winter Park, FL. They are not expensive, large is $35 and small is $25.

I thought something was wrong with my speakers

I've done the clay pot method with great success using 3 different sized pots (6 inch, 5 inch, and 2.5 inch I think) the 6 inch went on the bottom with its hole sealed, the 5 nests upside down inside the 6, and the 2.5 gets its outside sealed then is put on top of the 5 to act as the neck as well as a funnel for filling. everything got put together using clear GE Silicone #1 (100% silicone with no additives) that's just the brand I can get here easily. As long as it's 100% silicone (not the bath/ kitchen stuff!!) it's non toxic. Just make sure your clay pots are warm when you silicone them so that the pores in the clay are expanded and will bond with the silicone more readily. Doing it cold would probably work but I figure every little bit helps me from having to remake them as frequently.

Hi. I learned a little trick from RainbowGardens, a great gardening channel on KZread. In this, very large plastic bottles are used. I tried this and it seemed to work really well, tho I didnt do a comparison . But you get really big plastic bottles(i had a mix of 4 and 6 litre ones. Fill them with water, put them in the freezer and when the water has frozen take them out and attack them with a small awl or similar, poke lots of holes. When the ice has melted, bury them in your raised beds up to the neck. Then fill with water plus plant food(if appropriate), screw tops back on and voila! Water seemed to take about 2 days to drain away in a very hot summer. Not as good as ollas but much cheaper.

When you have auch water scarcity, create forests using Miyawaki Technique. It not only preserves water also gives abundant food, oxygen and shelter. Also make a pond in between the forest.

I stayed with the video only to find out that this is sort of the very same concept that I 'invented' myself earlier this year: I took a very fine, synthetic (for reasons of expected durability over cotton and to prevent soil from entering the water zone) net-like cloth, sew it in the shape of my container, filled it with expanded clay pebbles and placed it at the bottom of 15 cm deep container. Filling soil on top I now, after a few months, see that even after 4 days of heavy sunshine the plants don't get dry, while weeds growing on the top had a very hard time. Eventually they reached the moist part of the pot, unfortunately 2 days too early, otherwise the weeds probably died. I filled the reservoir up last week with a litre of water and since it has been perfectly fine. However, replacing the synthetic cloth with a flat board of clay could be a great next step!

Some glues are used in surgery. If it says it's safe, it's probably safer than whats in the soil naturally.

Why all the tapping. Sorry hard to concentrate on what you are telling me. Volume on voice is low about even with the tapping. Don't want to complain but wanted to understand better on the ollas.
