He is an outstanding teacher! It has a Portrait Drawing for Dummies simplicity, but then he fleshes it out and brings it to life!

Thank you for sharing. So glad Oliver encourages the tracing as it’s a way of learning recognizing shapes. I had teacher told me tracing is cheating…. Amazing of different points of views.

This is truly excellent teaching. He's not flexing his skill with this demo, and telling students "good luck to you". Solid, to-the-point teaching.

You can tell he loves what he does, both creating the artwork and teaching. I've loved drawing and painting portraits since I was a kid emulating my favorite comic book artists. But it's been a LONG time since I've done one. Watching this, maybe it's time to bring this back into my life. ;)

If you are teaching yourself to paint and draw and do not have an expert around to show you where you went wrong then I strongly recommend you buy this video, so far I have not found another that is better , especially if you are using charcoal as a means to practice painting. In the entire 6 hours I don’t think he wastes a single word , every sentence he utters is geared at teaching , a really impressive teaching tool.

Nice video but even after the tracing doing the correction step it seems that the face is too long and the head is too narrow, the ear and back of the hair needs to move to the left ?

But it comes out beautifully in the end. Somewhere in his process he brings it to life. Also I think the drawing is bigger than the photo, so it looks odd at first.

I think it's partially the angle. The drawing is further away from the camera so it's a bit more squished.

I bought the dvd last year and it was very good. There's over 6 hrs of instructions for portrait, three-quarter view and frontal view. This free program is less than an hour long.

He must be good, but I wonder why even the corrected shape, using the traced shapes is not correct. The skull and face in his drawing is much narrower and higher than the reference. You should have rerecorded this with a better drawing really.
