When I was at the age of 8, knowing nothing about soccer then, I turned on the TV once. The screen displayed the live match up between Germany and South Korea. Right then, I couldn't believe how the German goalkeeper actually made so many seemingly impossible saves. That was when I fell in love with soccer. Thank you, Oliver Kahn. @@donersempft5024 In this match, he truly played as a goalkeeper and a sweeper! But Kahn in 2002 lead Germany into the final single-handely. Okay, with a little help by Klose in the group stages and Ballack and Neuville in the knock-out-stages. I won't forget the match against the US. I jumped up so many times. Probably the best performance of a goalkeeper in WC history, with Tim Howard against Belgium in 2014. We would've never reached the final without Kahn. He rightfully deserved the _"Best Player Of The Tournament"_ award in spite of Ronaldos performance.

I remember watching the world cup 2002 and said to myself how can Germany reach the final with that defence. Unbelievable Kahn carried them through to the final. Very unlucky to lose against Brazil.

Just look at the opponents until the final: Saudi-Arabia, Ireland, Cameroon, Paraguay, USA and South Korea. Not the best teams... I'm sure that the World Cup would have ended for Germany if they have had to play against Spain, Argentina or Italy for example.

Kahn was THE reason for getting so far in this tournament. I remember that he made so many damn awesome safes that you got the feeling of „nothing can happen to us because Kahn is there“... I never had that feeling again. I was so glad that they gave him the player of the tournament trophy. And what a heartbreaking Moment as he made that huge mistake against brasil at the 1:0 .... that was so brutal after all these out of this world safes

In case you didn't know; Kahn had broken a finger as a player stepped on it earlier in the match if I remember correctly. That played into him making that mistake...

For years, I hated the fact that we lost that final to Brasil. Mostly because people were hating on Kahn, saying shit like "he cost us the finals". We never deserved to make it out of the group stage, that is how bad we were back then... Kahn was the ONLY reason why we made it to the finals in the first place. He didn't deserve to take any negative comments after he messed up in them. Anyway, ever since the last World Cup and that semi final against Brasil, I don't feel as bad about this World Cup anymore... ^^

I dont think Kahn messed up in those finals. Even in that final he made some great saves other goalkeepers wouldnt have made, and the first goal was caused by a very tricky shot many goalkeepers would have struggled with. Germany's defense didnt cover ronaldo, otherwise the 2nd attempt would not have been possible. and the 2nd goal was impossible for kahn to prevent. Overall if anyone is to take blame its germany's defense, kahn had to overperform in so many games, finals included, because the german defense was so bad and uncoordinated.

Also, Michael Ballack missed the final due to suspension. He was playing very well throughout the tournament. The final might have been a closer match (even though Brazil at that time would have had a slight edge) if Ballack was playing.

If I remember correctly, brazil's goalkeeper was also insane, but kahn was just the best.

Looking at this video just brought back memories as to how bad Germany's defense was at that moment in the 2002 World Cup. Oliver Kahn was a beast at that tournament! Without a doubt Kahn and Ronaldo were the best players at the 2002 World Cup and good thing that they both made it to the final.

I like how Kahn became the first goalie to win the Golden Ball award eventhough Ronaldo was the top scorer at that competition and Brazil are the winners of the tournament. Shows how much importance he brought to his country in captaining them to that last match. Legendary commander!

Ashish Singh i been a fan of germany since 1994 that was my first world cup i watched when i was 7 i been rooting for them ever since, this past decade they been in 2nd and 3rd, for the past world cups, but everything seems right in the cards for Germany to win this year, Klose is close to setting new record and make history, Germany due to win after a long drought, what better way to win then in brazil!

nyckid4ever Yeah I also think that Germany are long overdue a World Cup trophy that has avoided them for the past 24 years. And I also think that at this moment, before the Round of 16 starts tomorrow, that Germany is the best national squad at the moment in the world. They are filled with talent everywhere. But I simply do not see them winning it because of of the fact that the World Cup is being played in South America. They would certainly make history if they do win it! : )

Hopefully they do win, the way the brackets are set, brazil and france are ones to be concerned with but hopefully algeria dont give Germany trouble, and on the other side of the bracket US, Mexico, Netherlands and Argentina are contenders that have that hunger to win, it will be quite interesting though! but hopefully Germany wins and Klose ends his international career as a champion and breaks the record

At this world cup I fell in love with this sport and the position as a goalkeeper.. Kahn was the best, and 10 years later my style as a goalkeeper has a big influence of his style :)

@@Danbu1988 Ja zu einen hatten wir das Glück auf unserer Seite, aber andererseits muss man auch fairerweise sagen, dass die anderen Top-Teams teilweise schwache Leistungen abgerufen haben. Allein das Frankreich, Argentinien und Portugal in der Gruppenphase rausgeflogen sind, zeigt schon, dass es eine WM war, indem die Außenseiter geglänzt haben. Man kann es auch so interpretieren, dass bei dieser WM die Außenseiter stark aufgespielt haben. Der Umstand, dass Südkorea zwei glückliche und überraschende Siege gegen Italien und Spanien verbuchen konnte, muss allerdings auch berücksichtigt werden. Im nachhinein hatte Korea schon großes Glück. Nichts desto trotz sind die meisten Favoriten an ihren schwachen Leistungen gescheitert. Italien war alles andere als Souverän in der Gruppenphase und auch Spanien hatte im Achtelfinale große Schwierigkeiten mit Irland und Südkorea. Beide Spiele gingen ins Elfmeterschießen. Aber dennoch war es gerade deswegen eine schöne Weltmeisterschaft und die deutsche Mannschaft stand am Ende auch nicht unverdient im Finale. Die Mannschaft hat im gesamten Turnier nur 3 Gegentore kassiert und insgesamt 5 mal zu Null gespielt, das ist schon eine beeindruckende Leistung. Vor allem im Finale waren die deutschen besonders stark. Hier drehte sich der Spieß um, und Brasilien hatte das (verdiente) Glück (des Tüchtigen). Das im ganzen Turnier auch Glück dabei war, dass bestreite ich nicht. Das brauchst du immer, sonst kommst du erst gar nicht soweit :)

World Cup 2002 was my first Cup I have ever seen as child, and Oliver Kahn soon became my favorite player in this event, then from this point I was watching all future World and Euro Cups, and cheering for the National Elf. For me he is the all time best goalkeeper so far. This guy was more than a regular great goalkeeper, he had all the skills, not only reflex, physical strenght and leadership, but he perfectly recognized ths situations in front of the goal, it is why he succeeded so many times running out far from the goal line. He took the risk, but he knew what he is doing, he knew his own capabilities as well. I always felt like he is a mad tiger who would even grab the ball with his fangs, if he could.

The best Goalkeeper of all Time. Without him, we wouldn't eben have passed the group stage.

The group stage? Yeah... But the knock-out-stage was Kahn, Kahn, Kahn and Ballack.

It's embarrasing how poor the german defense performed back then. They would have barely made it out of the goup stage if they had had an average goalkeeper. Also they only barely defeated all of their opponents (except Saudi Arabia) and only managed to do so because Kahn saved their asses in every match.

Here in Germany, we consider the national team a _"tournament team"._ It doesn't matter how bad we did in friendlies or the qualifications, if it's WC or EURO time, the results must fit! But we screw up at the last steps so often. I don't know how many times we were runner-ups or 3rd at the World Cup....

Germany's strength are these incredible goalkeepers. And Kahn is the best of them.

Best Goalkeeper performance in a tournament I ever seen. I was 9 when this World Cup was on but I remember it perfectly. I played as a striker but Oliver Kahn made me want to be a goalkeeper and made me a Bayern fan ( as well as the signing of Claudio Pizarro since I’m from Peru ) never seen a goalkeeper like Kahn to this day not even close. Not just in terms of goalkeeping but he used to intimidate the hell out of attackers. They don’t make goalkeepers like Kahn anymore

How Olembe of Cameroon shit his pants in the 1v1 is a prime example of what separates Kahn from other great goalkeepers. He struck fear into the hearts and minds of opponents. Odd comparison maybe, but he was like Michael Jordan in that even teammates were afraid of him. He was a very loud and demanding leader who could certainly wear you down. But he just oozed confidence and made everyone raise their level of play. As a Dortmund fan I've seen this first-hand a good number of times. When Kahn played the other team often went into games already defeated. Nobody wanted to meet him in his territory, he was such a beast. One of a kind, have massive respect for him.

Honestly the greatest individual performance in world cup history. How he managed to carry germany to the finals and allow only 2 goals from a stacked Brazil team is mind-boggling.

Around 2015 I voluntered myself to be the goalkepper from our team (it was an inside tournament with the other students) i remember i knee nothing about defending and then i searched for good saves,then i found this video and i was just mesmerized by oliver khan,i kept replying this video again and again,thank God ronaldo scored those 2 goals hahahaha

Thanks to this wonderfully awesome keeper Germany got to the finals.

my favorite save was at 0:21 against Ireland look at the way he slides on the grass as if it was ice, horrendous speed and straight this guy had!!

I remember watching the final and his mistake looked much then than it does now. He was a monster during that tournament. It felt like you just couldn‘t lose with him, hence why the final was such a shock.

It's truly painful, it happens to everyone. All the effort and glory mean nothing in the last minute or chance to achieve a goal. He was Germany in 2002.Respect!

The 02 world cup was my time watching any soccer on tv. I was all for Brazil but I felt so bad for Kahn after this. This is the only time that I recall a keeper getting mega hype in a world cup.

Casillas was indeed not as godly as Kahn in WC2002, but he showed himself to be a very promising goalkeeper. Paid attention to him since that tournament. Kahn... went on to have a regression.

Chris Rasta He was injured that time. If he wasn't injured he'd surely stop him. First goal should not be counted because Rivaldo fouled Hamann ( if i'm not wrong ) and it should be a foul for Germany, but he shoot the ball, Kahn missed it and then Ronaldo scored. if Germany would have scored that goal in second half when Neuville hit the post. The result would be different.

Not really, the '02 squad was a significant improvement on the '98 squad and the horrendous team put together by Erich Ribbeck. Doesn't change the fact that the German WC games where pretty much "Oliver Kahn vs. [enter opposing nation here]", however.

It was impossible that a team of that calibre won't win the wc no mater how good Germany and Kahn were .A team with Rivaldo ,Ronaldhino ,Ronaldo ,Cafu ,Roberto Carlos ................ it was a pleasure to see them dancing with the ball .
