This is by far the most beautiful and especially the most expressive rendition of Paganini's 24th Caprice I've heard!

Very nice playing, this video will serve to be an example to show everyone that it is possible to play the violin without a shoulder rest even if they don't have a short neck.

I sometimes take off my chinrest and it is always a revelation how much better playing the violin is. As for a shoulder rest, I never used one - I hate them with a passion!. When I remove my chinrest I do vibrato better (arm and wrist) and my bowing is so much better, and I still can shift. I removed it today (after many months with it on) and I think that I am going to keep the chinrest off for good. I have never understood the idea that the violin is 'held' - I always have more success when it is balanced (as opposed to being fixed in one position with a shoulder rest or even a chinrest). Just a piece of cloth between the chin, violin and collarbone is enough to keep the violin from slipping - I wouldn't even use that if it weren't for getting sweat from my bearded face on the violin. I find that shoulder rests and chin rests encourage clamping down with the jaw. When you remove them you have no option but to play with greater freedom and it is pretty much impossible to clamp down with the jaw - what are you going to clamp down on after all? This makes the violinist explore other ways to play - I am always more successful when I remove the chin rest.

think of it as balancing the violin with your hand and shoulder, not so much holding it tight as you would with a shoulder rest.

I am a 65 year old professional violist. Playing viola is much harder than violin. I play with no shoulder rest. I took off my chin rest today and WOW - I played better than ever and sound better than ever. My chin rest was getting in my way to play in higher positions too. Now I can pull my viola in closer under my jaw (I use a soft piece of leather to protect and grip), and I place my chin and jaw very slightly on the center to center-right of the tail piece. My viola resonates more, it louder, quality of sound is much better, intonation is much improved and playability is much much better. I can now see and understand how Paganini played so well. Bowing is greatly improved, instrument rings and the increased vibrations go through my jaw into my ears allowing great sensations and increased sensitivity to sound production, intonation, shifting, bow pressures, everything! My chin rest was literally getting in the way of playing better - much better!

Sometimes I don't use a chin rest either. But I never use a shoulder rest. Do you always not use a chin rest?

Прекрасный звук! Похоже вы на своей скрипке играли? Интересно легко ли играть на скрипке Паганини? Какие ощущения возникают при игре? Как видно Паганини играл без подбородника и "мостика" - вот как лак протерся до самого дерева!

Playing the violin without a chinrest dumps the sound of it?

It does the opposite since the chin rest absorbs the vibrations of the violin
