Olecranon bursitis: Signs, symptoms and treatment of the elbow problem

Olecranon bursitis is the technical name for swelling of the bursa, or fluid-filled sac, on the tip of the elbow. In this video, I discuss the problem and what you can do to recover from it.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OLECRANON BURSITIS
If you have olecranon bursitis, you will notice a large amount of swelling on the tip of your elbow. It usually doesn’t hurt, but it can be uncomfortable applying pressure to it such as resting your elbow on a table. People who drive with their elbow resting on the window of the car often develop this problem.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Fortunately, most patients with olecranon bursitis can get better without surgery. Often simply avoiding direct pressure on the area can help. Ice and wearing an elbow pad can help too.
Sometimes the doctor or orthopedic surgeon will try a cortisone shot into the bursa to decrease inflammation. That can be helpful to decrease swelling.
SURGERY FOR OLECRANON BURSITIS
Surgery is rarely needed unless none of the non-surgical treatments help the swelling go down. On rare occasions, though, the bursa can get infected. If it’s red, warm or draining, a patient can have a septic olecranon bursitis that needs surgery to get rid of the infection.

I developed Bursitis on my elbow around 3-4 weeks ago. No pain initially, and only minor discomfort now. (not sure why that is) Since day one, I have worn a compression arm bandage 24/7, and its size has now reduced around 75%. Be careful not to compress too tight. I have 3, arm compression sleeves, of varying tensions, the looser fitting one, I use only at at night while sleeping, to avoid cutting off blood circulation, when elbow is bent, during sleep. Having 3 also helps, when after a few days, it's needing to be washed, for hygiene purposes. The compression sleeve is only removed, when showering. Also been rubbing in CBD cream, morning and night. I will mention, that I do not, put any faith in mainstream doctors, AT ALL, due to past experience. To date, I haven’t used ice packs, but may add this, to my self treatment program over the next coming days. I'm aiming for a recovery of around 6 weeks, in total........Watch this space !

Super useful. For the life of me, I couldn't understand why I got it. After watching your video David I just had a Columbo moment (!) . I realised that my OB appeared a week after deciding to work from the coffee table for the past 3 weeks (to change the routine of working at my desk for the past year). I just now i realised that while doing that I spent hours resting my head on my left hand with my left elbow digging into my left leg for support. Must be how I got that mini boob on my elbow! Thanks

I got this over a year ago. I was not sitting at a desk, neither was my elbow resting anywhere. I took moringa after some research and after two weeks I noticed it was half its size. Within a month it was almost gone. I just looked at my elbow some time after that and it was not there anymore. Same swelling around my ankles and knee also went. Moringa is really good. I have been on it for one year. I bought it for arthritis and was really surprised and happy when it removed that thing from my elbow and the other joints. Thanks moringa.

I got bitten by an insect on the elbow about a week ago, scratched it overnight until it bled. Slowly my elbow started to expand become really painful. My Dr said it was either the bug bite, the scratching, starting back at the gym(we have been locked down due to covid!) or a combination of all of the above that led to bursitis. Its been with me for a week now and seems to be settling down. Being totally honest I'm just self conscious of how it looks. Its not the worst thing that could happen to you.

I had what I think is a similar experience. I am a 65-y/o engineer in pretty good physical condition who works long hours at a desk leaning on my elbow on a chair arm rest. One day, I worked in a very old building attic. That night, it had swollen to about tennis ball size and very painful for about 3 days. I figured I got bitten by a Black Widow spider in that old attic. Swelling went down after 2 or 3 days. Redness spread from my elbow towards my wrist. No swelling of lymph nodes. Full-blown redness and swelling from elbow to knuckles. Appeared to be cellulitis. Lasted close to a week. Receded to local redness on elbow, about golf ball size. I was drinking MMS (sodium chloride) and rubbing some directly on the wound. Puss began oozing and forming a scab. Profuse and rapid oozing for a few days. Very sore and sensitive to touch. Wound closed up after about a week and became pink and not as sensitive. But no improvement over the next week or two. About a week ago (last week of August), I had pretty severe flu symptoms with sinus and lungs discharge. Flu symptoms continuing through today. I lapsed on my MMS treatments to alternate high-dose Vitamin C with the MMS treatments. I also had a job where I had to crawl on concrete and banged the elbow several times. The elbow flared up again. Redness began to spread. After more MMS treatment, redness receded to just the elbow. It was acutely painful, very red, with puss emitting. Now (2 months after onset), I am back to a big sore on the elbow with a half-dollar size puss pocket with some pain and weakness at the extremes of the range of movement. After doing some more research, I am going to try some calcium gluconate. I have an appointment with my naturopath in a couple of days.

Three dr.s have looked at my x ray and turned me down. It hurts constantly. I have bought e everything over the counter, take loads of ibuprofen and tylenol. This sucks. I regret getting the replacement surgery.

I have it right now, massive swollen Bursitis so swollen it restricted blood flow to my lower arm. it occurred from a fall directly on to my elbow. bruising down to were i wear a watch and up to halfway up my tricep. No breaks from x-rays, no injury other than soft tissue damage. mine hurt but it may have been two things, the bursitis and impact. using anit-inflam gel and oral, trying not to hurt it again is one big key to the other side. 14 days now and still up half the size of a golf ball.

I'm sure DIY surgery is frowned on, but this seems like something I could do at home...swab the area and use a sterile lancet. Do we really even need a syringe? Would one of those safety lancets typically used to draw blood on fingers go deep enough to puncture the bursa? I could then just squeeze out the fluid before applying a compression bandage. If I have to use a surgical lancet, just go in from the side so I don't risk doing damage correct? Anything else important to know?

I just recently developed bursitis on my elbow, which is probably due to exercising. I had it drained yesterday and immediately put a compressive bandage over it per the doctor. I also read that using compression over the elbow can prevent reoccurrence. I am changing the bandage underneath regularly and using antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Questions: How long should I wear the compressive bandage before I don't need it anymore? Also, should I be icing it or using heat to expedite recovery? Should I stop all arm related exercises for a period of time even if I am wearing a compression sleeve while exercising?

Bmx and skateboarding over the past 3 years have resulted in many elbow knocks... I had a random bursa infection and started hitting it before it healed, now it won't go away. It's less on the back of the elbow and more running up the forearm - it's very hard under the bursa, it feels like calcification. Light compression feels very comfortable. I'm going to try icing it every couple of hours after I hit it, and every night when it's healing up. I just want to know what sort of a role exercise can play, and if there are any other treatments I can deploy...

I came back from Miami a couple weeks ago. The airplane ride is what aggravated my elbows as the arm rests are very soft and have lots of cushion. No enlarging directly after the flight. Happened the following day... My elbow was feeling real sore and after coming back from the store when I was eating dinner.... Oh man. My son said, "Oh my gosh!" I was also taken aback as it looked like my elbow was melting off. Sure enough it was olecranon bursitis. I took 600mg Motrin and wrapped it with a regular Ace type bandage, not tight but just snug for cushion. I would say 5 hours later the swelling went down by 60% by the next morning 85% now it's pretty much gone but I do feel the sack in my elbow... Stretched out from the fluid buildup.
