Old Wounds - Prelude to FNaF6 (Five Nights at Freddy's Animation)

Фильм және анимация

This animation is an attempt to flesh out one of the most bare-bones areas of the FNaF lore: The events leading up to FNaF6. In that game, Lefty just shows up, already with the puppet trapped inside, with nothing but an Easter Egg blueprint to explain how it was supposedly specifically designed to retrieve the Puppet. It's left incredibly vague, and I imagine the real reason for that whole subplot (if you can even call it that) is merely to keep the return of the Puppet a secret from the audience a little longer.
I tried to convey some amount of disdain for the return of Freddy's in the Puppet despite her having no dialogue, namely the deliberate covering up of the looming billboard. This was to bolster the idea that the Puppet needed to be dragged back by force, being perfectly happy to just rot away in an alley rather than come investigate. All the other creatures in FNaF6, by contrast, show up willingly. The green security bracelet, intended to be the same one Charlie was wearing, is hinted at in FNaF6's blueprint Easter Egg as Lefty's means of luring her in. It's a connection to Charlie's short life that would surely grab her attention to see again.
The unseen figure who builds Lefty at the beginning is intended to be Henry, Charlie's father. It might at first seem like he's kept mysterious for the sake of drama, but really it's because I can't model convincing human characters yet. Several unrelated phrases from his in-game dialogue were cut up and rearranged to create the recorded message at the end.
This is my first animation to span multiple locations, and as a result I spent three times longer modeling environments than I otherwise would have. The near-monochrome yellow/orange color-palette of the exteriors is a deliberate stylistic choice: I've wanted for a long time to have something take place under that particularly oppressive kind of street lighting that I find strangely stressful and yet also atmospheric. It's a relentless sort of light that seems to crush any other color out of existence, and I found it perfect for a scene like this.
External resources used:
-Includes sound effects taken from FNaF2, Sister Location, FNaF6, Security Breach (along with samples from KZread's audio library and plenty of good old fashioned foley work), and voice clips from Dave Steele as Henry Emily
-Includes textures taken from FNaF6, Help Wanted, and materials from poliigon.com
-Puppet model is from Help Wanted, with only minor modifications
-A couple background scene-filler props also from poliigon.com

Music in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJlkzs16ZdzLmaw.html Since this animation gets into the weeds a little bit when it comes to FNaF lore, I feel some explanation is in order for those who need it. The puppet was originally used as something of an automated child-minder, and kept track of its charges by the colored bracelets they were given. A young girl named Charlie, daughter of Henry Emily, was placed in the puppet's care and assigned a green bracelet, but the puppet failed to save her from being whisked away and murdered. This event led to the puppet becoming haunted by Charlie's ghost. This is why Charlie/the Puppet, now one conjoined being, recognizes the bracelet in this animation. Henry Emily, father to Charlie and co-founder of Freddy's, is responsible in FNaF6 for resurrecting the Freddy's brand, as part of an attempt to lure in the remaining creatures for which the Freddy's incidents were responsible (Springtrap, the Puppet, and the remains of Ennard). Charlie/the Puppet is the only one who doesn't take the bait, and so must be collected by force. Lefty is Henry's solution to this: a specially-made robot clad in the shell of a Freddy animatronic, dispatched to retrieve the Puppet and smuggle it back into the Freddy's restaurant to be with the rest of the creatures for what shall referred to for the sake of spoilers as 'Henry's barbecue party'. The name 'Lefty' is a nickname for the acronym 'L.E.F.T.E', or 'Lure, Encapsulate, Fuse, Transport, Extract.' All the business with the opening torso and Ennard-tentacles with claws on them is completely invented for this animation and not remotely canon. The Lefty model we actually get in-game is, infuriatingly enough, not at all customized to accommodate the Puppet, so I took some liberties when redesigning it.

Personal highlight for me was how expressive you managed to make the puppet, despite its face not moving at all. The movement reminded me a lot of the characters from Wall-E, which I would say is an absolute achievement. I hope this gets more attention, because the effort put in really shows in every separate element. Phenomenal soundtrack, composition, writing, Foley, and character design. I adore the contrast of how puppet and lefty treat the green bracelet because they show the difference of what it represents to charlie and henry. Charlie treated it with care and hesitance, something almost like reverence, because that green bracelet is the reason she could possess the puppet and continue her life, even if it's in a roundabout way. So she, in an odd way, has a positive outlook to it. It saved her and gave her a chance to save others. But lefty doesn't give it a thought before crushing it under his metaphorical boot because to henry, that is his greatest failure, as a mechanic and as a father. The bracelet failed to keep charlie alive in the flesh, in the end the bracelet he designed to keep her alive let her die anyway. It is the physical symbol of how he failed his daughter, and so he has a negative outlook to it. I adore that detail.

Wow, I love this! It's certainly quicker than the showcase animation, yet still comprehensible. I like the idea that, while an extra Rockstar Freddy was taken specifically for this purpose, its internals were just left as a spare endo and the shell put onto a completely new one - which makes sense given the thought that went into it. The scanner is a particularly nice touch, as is the use of the bracelet to get the Puppet to approach and hold still long enough to get captured - or 'encapsulated', as it were. The detail of the Puppet turning Lefty's head towards the recording is also a good point some people don't make often: While Lefty might be self-propelled, it's still a machine and its own joints can be forced to move in whatever way another entity wants if that other entity is strong or determined enough to do so. Also nice that we got to see the back of the casing, since in the display video that part was somewhat left out. Also, I love the Puppet's animations! Laying there like that, the detail of moving aside that board so she doesn't have to look at the billboard, the way she flips upright so quickly upon recognizing an approaching animatronic. And after the flashback scene, she sort of.. walks, while hovering, like she's half trapped in memories of before she could hover. Very nice interpretation of a character we still don't have many solid official interpretations of (FNaF 2 itself just had a nondescript lunge, and Help Wanted had.. well, there was something, but that's an unreliable source in canon and in the series's history)! Also, the recording. I recognized it as cut-up dialogue from Henry's lines in-game, but it sounds very fluid, as though it was actually said like that. Excellent work splicing the audio; I imagine you messed with it a bit to cover those points? I see what you mean about oppressive street lighting. Whether it's the harsh fluorescent yellow-orange ones, or the even harsher and brighter electric blue ones, those lights blot out everything else, and make for a very good tone. The contrast between the flashing yellows in the car, the brightly lit workshop, and finally the dim and backlit alley is very nice, and though the third scene is longer than the other two combined, it didn't feel drawn out at all. Excellent work, and I can't wait to see what you do next. One more set of details I noticed after writing this, as well: The contents of that drawer, other than the bagged bracelet. Most obviously, an envelope with the label simply reading 'DAD', and a gun with a sticky note that says 'NOT YET'. Good foreshadowing to how done Henry is, wanting to do nothing once he's finished with this final duty. That, and the expanding flexible casing around Rockstar Freddy's joints, which is a very neat little detail that likely would be in a real animatronic like that, rather than the open gaps. Keeps particles and whatnot out, keeps the design simpler for marketing and memorabilia, and still retains that classic segmented design and full mobility. And finally the details in the alleyway - a discarded can on the upper fire escape, the larger pieces of junk tossed in with the rest of the garbage there, the poster for an in-universe company (one of the sponsors you can get in FFPS, right?). So much attention to detail.

Wow, I’m very impressed someone noticed the gun so quickly after uploading this. Yes, that’s meant to be a nod toward’s Henry’s consistently suicidal nature in both forms of canon he appears in. The rubber sleeves covering the joints on Freddy were actually inspired by Doctor Octopus’s tentacles from Into the Spider-Verse, I found the translucent green ribbed tubing to be incredibly satisfying and wanted to use it in something. The chopped-up Henry dialogue was pretty much just lucky, I didn’t do any other manipulation other than splicing it. I just took the beginning of one sentence, the middle of another, and the end of a third, so his tone remained natural. Lastly, I actually quite like the blue-white kind of streetlights as opposed to the blindingly orange ones. I’ve always found their light to be very refreshing by comparison, much closer to natural daylight.

@@TheNickofTime Henry does sort of talk in a disjointed monotone, so splicing his sentences can get lucky. I wonder if that was intentional; given his character's style of recording he might be implied to do that to his own tapes sometimes. Not sure I prefer the blue streetlights, since they're so much brighter and more harsh on the eyes in the nighttime, but they certainly resemble the sky a bit more. The orange might be the sun's color, but it doesn't hit the ground that way. And every form of Henry does seem to have a suicide problem, doesn't he? I guess he has lost a lot, though.

DEAR GOD THIS IS GOOD! The amount of detail in this is great. Lefty being gentle by design because a father did not want to hurt his daughter anymore than she already had been. The fluent transition between scenes from the highway sign. Heck, from what I saw in the comments, a note by a gun reading "not yet," implying that Henry wanted to do the deed possibly many times out of desperation (reasonably so). I can definitely see why this would be something of a 4 month plus project. Also, Charlie's fed up attitude with Freddy's is a hilarious take

Im sure that the reason why she attacks you in the game is that she mistakes you with William Afton (aka the popular theory (?) that I am agreed with is that Michael, William’s son and the one who committed the bite of 87/83 is the night guard trying to undo his father’s crimes but at the same time the possessed animatronic’s mistake him with his father due to father and son similarities). She probably has no problem with other people or (maybe even especially) kids.

The way he created lefty to be so gentle with her. And how he took inspiration from the springlock suit and circus baby. Theres no violent snatch up like elizabeth, just gentle chords to enwrap the puppet and lull it to lefty, and no daggers waiting to lock it into place, but rather a harness waiting to hug it safely. Then the music. All to keep his daughter at peace for the short while she has left. Beautiful

As always your foley and sound design are a breath of fresh air and a joy to listen to. Love all the little details you're able to put into the animation, like the drawer slightly bouncing back after being opened so quickly. The Puppet just blocking their view of the billboard is both very in-character and a little funny, it got a chuckle out of me at least. Your animations always have this quality that I'm having a hard time putting into words. They feel very "whole", very complete, every step as carefully crafted as the last (at least from the viewer's perspective), and not many people are able to achieve that feel. Great work!

I appreciate your appraisal of the ‘feel’ of my animations. If my shorts go on to be remembered in the Five Nights fanbase, I’d want it to be for their atmosphere. It’s the part I’m most proud of.

This is so intricately thought out. The animation, lighting and camera work is so insanely high quality it gives such a professional finish. This was such a great animation I think you did a great job. I love the detail of Lefty with just the primer. Of course being the one man band you are, I know you've dabbled with costumes and figure painting so it makes sense. My only thing I have to say is I would have liked to see the puppet feel more puppety, maybe having its limbs blow around in the wind giving as if that's how it floats. Though at the same time I understand that would compromise the expression of an already expressionless puppet which you did a good job of capturing(hehe). Of course everything else is on point and this was fun to watch. Great work once again.

I actually considered the idea of animating the Puppet as if it were a rod puppet, like actually creating virtual rod controllers that I’d animate with to give it that distinctive type of movement. But after showing some unfinished clips looking for feedback, I was recommended to have a more supernatural sort of movement to the puppet instead, so I went with that. I still want to use my idea of digitally-emulated rod puppetry in something, though.

  • @voltronimusprime3833

@@TheNickofTime That kind of digital puppetry would be perfect for animating the Puppet's origin. We see it entertaining and watching over kids, maybe see how its attention suddenly shifts towards any kid who strays too far, showing its protective nature, before suddenly having a bunch of alerts pop up because a kid is detected outside the pizzeria. It goes outside, and tries to reach the kid, but it's raining heavily, weighing down the suit making it harder to float, so it has to walk or even crawl. As the water soaks through the outer layers it starts getting into the electronics, causing shorts, and power is allowed to go where it's not supposed to. Low voltage areas are damaged while high voltage ones are starved. We see that flashback shot of it staring down at the bracelet. This was a lot longer than I intended, sorry, lol.

Some design features I noticed about Lefty that I think aid in showing how “purpose built” he is: -Lefty’s black paint could be used to camouflage in dark spaces, making him hard to detect at night, when he’d be released to locate his target, Charlie. He probably has some kind of coded instruction to hide during the day, both to save power and avoid discovery. -Although possibly unintended, Lefty being a recolored Freddy makes it easy to disguise as a run of the mill stage animatronic. I would imagine, if Lefty had made it to the pizza place before the others, that he would fit in on the stage, thus not rousing suspicion during opening hours, with its captive hiding in plain sight. -The process of which Lefty captures Charlie is methodical, and, one might even say, gentle. After securing Charlie’s arm initially, they allow her to tire themselves out attempting to pry herself free, before moving on to complete immobilization, ensuring that Charlie is too exhausted to struggle, and thus easier to capture without harming. -In general, Lefty’s movements are slow and passive, which would aid in getting close enough to its target to capture her without immediately driving her away.

My interpretation of Lefty’s and the Puppet’s ‘co-existence’ isn’t really interesting enough to carry a whole animation. Basically, I just imagine Lefty as a robot with no real mind of its own, that carries the puppet with it into the Freddy’s restaurant in FNaF6.

Videos like these show us what through animation what most likely went down. It's genius and incredible.
