Just got home from playing my first game with the Chaos Dwarfs in ToW!! Been waiting for this for soooo long and super excited for the new edition. First off the Devs have done us really proud here. In most editions, CDs have a token list - they could’ve just used the Azgorgh list but instead we have the best of everything - really cool for Big Hat Middlehammer enthusiasts like me!! Best Chaos Dwarf list ever. Comments as I’m listening along: - Burning Body: Awesome. Striking first potentially hits the fighting rank, very welcome! - Backstabber - a simple rule that makes so much narrative sense and flavour! - Hellbound is brilliant: causing terror on the Iron Daemon is wonderful. - Curse of Hashut is bloody brilliant, especially against low T Elves, Goblins, Humans etc. - Storm of Ash in a great for Castles and wizards in units. - Demonology has a great synergy with Terror Causing mounts. - The odd miscast is worth it for increase Toughness. - Blood of Hashut is a great suprise in challenges. - Castellan not being able to ride mounts is a little sad. - Hobgoblin Khans!! Woo! Great at beefing up and shoring up the LD of a Hobgiblin block. Wish they had a Shaman option but wizarding hat could be a thematic option for this. - IG are great! So cool to have detachments tough to pick loadouts from so many great options, but fireglaive is my fave so far. Blunders are so cool but hard to bring to bear at the cost! - Hobs are even cheaper! Sweet! Small chaff units! Big brick unit! Wish we could do a full list of them! Most people underestimate them, thinking they are like goblins when they are actually more like cowardly humans stat wise. - So chuffed to bring Black Orcs again!! - Sneaky gitz are finally realised . In previous editions they had poison and flanking rules, but skirmish and ambush suits them way more! I could see myself taking another unit of them to gaurd the artillery pool from invading chaff. - Ironsworn are so expensive but so hard. Way better than in 8th. Those extra attacks suit great weapons. You missed their rule that lets levies reroll panic. Situational but with the overseer banner, could see a small unit holding down multiple Hob units on a flank. - K’Dai are a bit of a miss for me, but I never really liked their addition thematically in 8th. - Bull centaurs are annoying for players with the old versions. They will look completely lost on that massive base size. Think they missed the boat on what these guys are meant to be rule wise. - Iron Daemon!! Choo choo!! Hard to shift and will likely keep their points alive in most smaller scale games! Mine cost me a bomb so iM going to use it all the time. Mine killed a Treeman today. - You missed the fact that making an Iron Daemon Hellbound makes it cause TERROR!! - I love having options and the Deathshrieker having both Krak and Frag is ace. Fish for direct hits on monsters with Hellbound or engineer rerolls. Frag them and you might get lucky and panic a unit off the table early game. - it’s hard to miss with the magma cannon - The changes to bolt throwers for this edition make Hob bolt throwers so great. Kill two cavalry models and they’re nearly making their points back! - Ogre loader is mandatory for the Earthshaker/Dreadquake. Quake isn’t as good as previous versions but that’s fair. - It won’t come up too often but, Hellbound adding ‘Fear’ to artillery pieces will protect them from low unit strength chaff. - Wolfriders are a classic chaff, March block, flank running threat! Or even a mid strength light cav with a Khan. - Don’t miss the destoryer it was OTT and off piste lore wise. imho. Look forward to seeing you all on the battlefield soon. You can always stick 2 old metal Bull Centaurs on a larger base and count the whole thing as a single modern one.

For me, nothing looked like this army on the tabletop, they are simply strange and archaic. This was the diffinitive army that always came to mind anytime someone mentioned Warhammer.

This was a good review… which makes sense because Rob is a ball of fire

Ahhh my first ever Fantasy Army. Recently painted a Blunderbuss unit that had been left bare white metal since like 98. I said I'd get round to it!

So tempted just for the unit filler possibilities. Mining equipment, hauling slaves and flaming daemons will make such a good looking army on he table. Now with added choo choo trains?!

Too many list I’ve seen are sleeping on the usefulness of the hobgrots and black orcs units.

Infernal Guard hand weapons are not Ensorcelled. You should basically always take them with Fireglaives or great weapons because the lack of AP really sucks on them.

Iron demon with hellbound also has terror. I haven’t been able to play it yet, but feels useful against some armies

I think you might have small mistake, as you mention that Infernal Guard with shields have Ap 1? As they don't get Enxorceled Weapons like Infernal Ironsworn and Bullcentaur Renders do... Also for charging, give sorcerer-prophet Lore Familiar, choose Daemonology, pick up Steed of Shadows and cast it to your Infernal Ironsworn. Now they have Fly (12) Aka the tactic which probably will be known in future as "Chorf Tossing"

Cheers Morhg, Steed of Shadows sadly only applies to a single character, not a whole unit. Travel Mystical Pathway from Elementalism is the only conveyance spell we have access to that affects a whole unit.

@@iJasko I think you are incorrect Steed of Shadows doesn't say it can only use for single character. " This spell can only target friendly models whose troop type is ‘infantry’. If the target friendly unit is not fleeing and has not already moved during this Movement phase, it gains the Fly (12) special rule until your next Start of Turn sub-phase" That is effect of it, where in that it says it can be used to single characters only, not whole unit? It even mentions plural models in the effect... It used to be single model spell in past if I remember right, but it is not so anymore...

Really loving this army overview series! As someone who only briefly looked into Fantasy near the end of 8th ed, getting my head around TOW has taken some time. Your explanations here, and in the whole series, have been super helpful for learning how each army plays, as well as how the USRs work. They've also been great for learning how to think about different units tactically. Sadly, you did high elves and chaos dwarfs before good and honorable regular dwarfs, and that's a grudgin'!

Love those. Really looking forward to the Vampire Counts one. Also random but curious how GW interpret the latest sales. Considering I spent about 600$ supporting AoS by buying SoulBlight Gravelords with the sole purpose of playing them in Old World and never playing AoS

I think the black orc war boss is going to be our melee workhorse. We have no high initiative scrappers, stick him on a wyvern + hammer + mantle + a potion of speed and you could do some real damage

I’m confused as to whether they intended us to be able to use the Wyvern, whether the Blorc is meant to use equipment from the Chaos Dwarf magic items, or whether he can pick from either?!

@@PRAISE_HASHUT If you follow the grand army list, you get to the Black Orc Boss entry in the O&G grand army list and treat it exactly as if this would be an entry in the Chaos Dwarfs grand army list. Says it can be mounted and that the mounts can be found on page 19 in the O&G army list. OK, so a Wyvern. Under magic items it just says he can have 50/100 points but doesn't refer to the O&G magic item list, therefore you use the one in the Chaos Dwarfs grand army list. For magic items, I'm very confident this is both RAW as well as RAI. For mounts it's definitely RAW, maybe not RAI, but since GW made it *very* clear there won't be any FAQ/Errata for the legacy armies, it's up to the players.

Don't think infernal guard get the Ap -1 from ensorcerelled weapon (lack the keyword). So just the 4+ save with shields. I feel they intended the blunderbusses to get the bonus from when unit is 20 strong but as it's written right now I think it says all 20 need to be able to shoot, so either one long line or MASSIVE unit. My initial plan for 1k force, mostly influenced by what models I have at hand is regiment of 20 guard with shields and the suicide bomb on champ, + 2 x 6 blunderbuss detachments. No idea how that will work out but should be fun. Plan is, 2k that shield unit becomes ironsworn, since it is the classic big hats after all.

You are unfortunately correct about the ensorcerelled weapons. The Blunderbuss rule as written is pointless, as its almost never going to trigger. I was hoping our ranged options would be cheaper this edition, they are often not in range and when they are its 6's to hit.

Once more: well done! Are you going to do an introduction to factions in terms of models and where to get them any time soon? Think "Start Collecting: [insert faction here]" and talking about what models are available from what sources. You could cover not only GW, but alternative plastics like Mantic (they do actually nice Chaos Dwarfs), other manufacturers in plastic, metal and resin and possibly 3D printing options. I think this would be really useful for folks interested to start TOW.

Would love a tactics vid following these type of reviews. Awesome work though

Hobgoblin Khan is great warmachine hunter. Love using two as fast hunters.

Very cool review, I just wish they had brought back the Juggernauts too! And maybe had a Chaos Dwarf cannon/bolt thrower option of some sort. Love how flexible the Infernal Guard can be equipped!

The gameplay looks cool and I love chaos dwarfs because of total war (especially the Kdaai destroyer) just sad that no models are currently sold for them

Chorfs continuing the trend of being absolutely bonkers Hybrid tanky wizard/engineer lord… nuff said Super strong shooting, looking at you blunderbuss (arty is now way less broken but you can still take hellcannons) Bull Centaurs are what ogres wish they were Oh and 3 point levy chaff with shortbows…

Now i just gotta find STLs to match the badass total war models 😂

The "Infernal Engineer" special rule sadly doesn't work on the Iron Daemon since it's troop type is heavy chariot and not war machine.

Shame you didn’t cover the magic items and banners Rob! Would love to know your thoughts on the ‘Beard of Lamasu’ or ‘Overseer Token’. The former seems pricey but buff tactic for gun lines. The later could make Hongbolins surprisingly resilient courage wise.

I think Beard of Lamasu is an almost mandatory pick on Ironsworn given how expensive they are. Having a 6+ ward against anything , a 5+ ward against shooting and magic resistance 2 will save you a bunch of points. The fact that it can help 1-2 other units nearby is a nice bonus as well.

Answered in the FAQ actually! They'd take items from Orcs and Goblins or Common magic items : )

Chaos dwarfs look incredibly good. The thing thats frustrating to me as an empire player is that so many other factions are handed out the Detachment rule, and in this case I think it's just crazy good for the chorfs. Infernal guard are already better than dwarf warriors but then you also let them act as detachments too. Not to say the chorfs are OP, it's just that I'm jealous that empire has nothing special about it anymore

Empire is still the most versatile army list and can be adapted to any playing style, though.

Can Black Orc Bosses take Magic items only from the Chaos dwarfs or can they take Magic items from Orcs and Goblins?

Feels like a lot more stuff in the game has improved defense against flaming than has vulnerability to flaming. Can someone make an argument for paying for flaming attacks? other than trying to kill a tomb king on bone dragon?
