    I grieve over lack of Transformation of Kardon. Being able to turn my wizard into a monster made it my favourite spell in the entire game.

    This is really interesting since those are actually the from categories of magic from the WFRP 1st edition Realm of Sorcery supplement, with Battle Magic encompassing the Eight Lores of Magic taught by Teclis, and Illusionism, Elementalism, and Hedge Wizardry representing the magical traditions in the Empire before the arrival of Teclis, and Dark, Necromancy, and Demonology being the forbidden arts in the Empire. Also, lore of shadows is always described as the magic of illusion, and the Jade Wizards were also called "Elementalists" in the 7th edition rulebook.

    Wood Spellweavers can use Illusion. Take a familiar to pick your spells and an Ogre Blade. Throw her in your Cav death star unit and she can do as much or more damage than your melee lord...

    Vortex spells almost seem like something you drop behind a unit you feel you will beat in combat so when they fall back they take some extra damage. Or dropping it as a blocking spell like Steve has said.

    Extra Attacks [x] doesn't modify your attacks characteristic, so if you get hit by aomthing that applies a -1 to attcks, the Extra Attacks remain. I think.

    Give a HE Archmage the Warden of Saphery honour for 10 points, so that the doppelganger spell does 2d6 S5 Ap -2 hits with killing blow and then you can give them magic armour so you're not just dead in combat

    Almost seems to me like Waaagh magic is leaning towards helping O&G casters on monsters, Hand of Mork for positioning to get your massive auras onto as many units as possible? Just a shame Night Goblin Shaman are stuck on foot still

    I wonder why they didn't go with the 8 original lores of magic and then have a couple signature spells for each army lore like they've already done. It kind of bothers me that these spells are all over the place and some are even taken from old lores. Phantasmagoria is a Daemon of Slaanesh spell and won't feel very lore friendly if you have empire battle mages casting it.

    Because the 8 lores system is fundamentally a Teclian/Imperial College of Wizards thing. In the fluff pretty much no wizard kept their magic to just 1 wind before Teclis said so. In fact, restricting all armies other than the Empire to the 8 mono-wind lores like was the case in the last several editions conflicted with the fluff.

    So does tempest auto kill fanatics near it as it makes open ground difficult terrain and fanatics die as soon as they touch difficult or dangerous terrain...

    Can you cast Walk Between Worlds to gain etherial for a round and then charge (or vice versa)? Or does that not work with the order of opperations?

    The new restrictions paradoxically make magic waaay more interesting to my mind. I didn't like how ludicrously deadly vortexes were in 8th, but now that things are toned down, I'm really eager to see what an Empire Battle Wizard on a pegasus can do!

    @chad534 personally 80 bucks for basic troops choices on old sprues doesn't seem worth it. I'm already at a place where I have enough models for other games. so paying extra for objectively worse models (i know they are cool but very dated) is kinda locking me out. I was hyped when I thought it would be new stuff but old + pricey isn't it for me personally.

    @@itssupermandoe2434 Yup I understand. Luckily for me I just kept my tomb kings and had recently acquired tons more bretts. So I'm happy they didn't update too much makes my armies viable again

    Not say that there is anything wrong with the new lores. I just miss the diversity of many lores of magic in the older versions. Especially the colors of magic. I like that they tuned magic down, making it less powerful and dominating, but I prefer there to be more lores. For me it seems more like laziness from GW

    This is actually a reference to the old first edition fantasy roleplay supplment Realm of Sorcery system. Battle Magics is alos the old all-encompassing lore before 4th edition. In 3rd edition the lores were High, Dark, Necromantic, Battle, Waagh, Chaos (Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Nurgle), Skaven and Chaos Dwarf magics, and the eight lores were referred alltogether in realms and 4th edition as "Battle Magic". It is interesting they singled out Illusionism and Elementalism though, as these two were only their own separate lores in WFRP 1st edition; although Grey Wizards are also called Illusionists and Jade Wizards the Elementalists up to 7th/8th edition WHFB rulebook.

    Sure Armor of Destiny is 70 points, but can't you put it on a guy mounted on a monster and have ~9 wounds with a 4++?

    Yes this was my first though. High elf prince of dragon 9 wounds at T6 with as much of a stack as i can.

    For a High Elf Prince on a Dragon you're probably better off with the Dragon Helm, Talisman of Protection, and Seed of Rebirth. Add in the normal equipment and the dude is 2+/5++/5+++. Armor of Destiny is only Heavy Armor and since you can't take the Dragon Helm with it you're left with a 4+/4++/5+++ set of saves. Even against a Great Cannon the first gives you 5+/5++/5+++ while Armor of Destiny is only a 4++/5+++. It's only if they proc the Armor Bane that Armor of Destiny gets to be better and AP that high (-5!) is super rare. The first set of equipment is also ~20 points cheaper.

    enjoyed your read, I am really looking forward to playing fantasy again. 8th edition (in my opinion) killed fantasy. I feel it could have been saved if they added "an army must contain at least 3 core units" this would have removed the every army is one giant hoard unit.

    I feel that most times an edition did something new like 8th did with hoarde and steadfast, it generally was rocky. The edition after that one was generally good as any issues with new mechanics were identified and addressed. Is why we needed a 9th so badly lol. In my opinion, to get the benefits of being in a hoarde formation, the unit should have needed a special rule (Let's call it "hoarde unit"). I play High Elves and, imho, none of their units would be a "hoarde unit". But goblins 100% would be. Ah well, is too bad we never got it and all we can do is speculate 😢

    Seems largely irrelevant. Since all the mechanics allowing you to actually try and push through or counter particular spells etc have been stripped out and we're left with barely a magical system, the relevance of thinking about spells outside "who do I want to receive the fireball this turn" is just chosing a lore for your wizard, which you don't really need much contemplation for.

    I don't think it's quite that straightforward. There's alot more magic interaction going around from the board, like magic resist and bubbles of -2 to spell cast and stuff. There are also power & dispel scrolls, add a dice and drop lowest.. not much but it's something. There'll still be a battle over magic, just the stakes aren't as high as they were. Overall the lores all look very nice and offer utility and interesting things. Change is ok sometimes, even if it's not perfect.

    I think the magic system in The Old World is it's only bigger weakness, but having now watched 5 battle reports and listened to hours of reviews, you are being way too harsh. There's still much more tactical depth and fun to be had with the new system. Otherwise I think it’s the best ruleset since 6th and much better in many ways, although overall so far I still prefer 6th.

    @@Ethnarches That's fair, and I do think it's probably the best since 6th (unless we count WAP), the magic system is the major failing point and to the point that it largely takes away the relevance of thinking about the spells in detail. You simply aren't going to be choosing which to take, which to cast, which to try and dispel...

    A agree, the should be some kind of threat except double 1's or pool of power. Casting every available spell is not fun. Plus spell familiar will make it even more boring.
