Wrestling News Side He cried twice. Once for the death of Gwen Stacy and the other was uncle Ben. Both heart breaking loses. Andrew Garfield sucked me into the amazing Spider-Man and I loved Emma stone as Gwen Stacy. They’re chemistry was excellent. When Gwen father died all I wanted to do was hug her. Same for peter when Gwen dies. I’m like this dude needs a hug. Amazing Spider-Man had more emotions and the world felt real and the action was great. I loved electro, I can’t understand why people think that he attack s people out of nowhere. Did people forget that a sniper shot at him and that was after Spider-Man promised he wouldn’t hurt him. It’s then followed by the line. “YOU LIED TO ME!” It wasn’t peter fault the police wouldn’t stop shooting at electro but he then had to save people. So I honestly don’t see the problem with electro attacking people. He felt like his idol betrayed him. I liked the lizard even if he’s alittle forgettable. And the green goblin...... yeah..... even I can’t defend that. Though he’s still better then Defoe and I can’t believe I’m saying that because I love William Defoe. However I’m judging how he acted in that movie not his career in general. And in the rami movies. He’s really phoning it in. And just can’t take him seriously. And don’t give me your not supposed to take comics seriously. If people can get heart broken over their favorite character getting finger snapped by thanos then this has no excuse. Comics are serious however they balence it with comedy and that’s what makes marvel so great. Because they pull this off so well.

"Maguire's so quiet and so awkward it's kind of hard to imagine him running around in a costume like that." THAT'S THE POINT. Peter Parker isn't supposed to be a guy you look at and go, "yeah, he could totally be a super hero." The reason why Parker is so endearing as a character is because he is quiet, nerdy and awkward.

Sir Topham Hatt And on the other hand, garfield tries to be like maguire but just can't, for example: At the begining of the movie we see him getting bullied...why? This guy is cool! The reason why tobey maguire's peter parker was bullied was because he was a nerd, and nerds are unfairly bashed, but garfield isn't a nerd. What? You're telling me that the simple fact that he wears glasses makes him a nerd? F*CK OFF! I hate this movie!

@Wyatt Burchell Well I didn’t like Peter and Mary Jane’s relationship in the original trilogy and I disliked Mary Jane. I honestly can’t dislike Tobey Maguire, so that’s why I said I only dislike Mary Jane. Their relationship and chemistry isn’t better either. Dislike Peter and Gwen all you want, but at least their chemistry was believable. Peter and Mary Jane’s on the other hand is so cringe that I cannot believe that they’re in love. I mean seriously, the romantic dialogue is laughable. Mary Jane: “You’re taller than you look.” Peter: “I hunch.” Mary Jane: “Don’t.” Like wth? 😂 Did a middle schooler write that dialogue? It really shows David Koepp is not good with writing romantic dialogue. But then again, what do you expect from the screenwriter of The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1993), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Angels & Demons (2009) and director of Mortdecai (2015)?

I always personally loved the original toby McGuire films, and I always think of him as the definitive Spider-Man. What makes his Spider-Man a classic is he plays spidey like an every-man: He's flawed, his life is messy and his powers and purpose as a whole makes it all the more complicated. Not every guy is a natural-born badass. Having a guy who's barely considered an adult in the real world trying to balance his life as peter parker and his duties as Spider-Man is played in an interestingly realistic way by Mr. McGuire. In the costume he is totally believable as the hero-but when he's just peter parker, you wouldn't think so. And that's the point, which is why it works so beautifully.

I'm not sure I necessarily agree with the Best Spider-Man ruling, because there are definitely points on Maguire that Doug either simplified or didn't explain correctly. For one, he didn't quit being Spider-Man because it was just hard, he quit because his powers were literally failing him and he felt he was posing a greater danger to the public and himself by continuing to be a superhero. And on being shy and awkward, you could argue that that makes him less assuming. With Garfield, I could always sense he was hiding something, and let's face it, he's terrible at concealing his identity, whereas Maguire's personality added more mystery, because you wouldn't connect a sky, awkward teenager with a wisecracking, smart mouthed superhero.

WOW ok, immediately gonna call you on the action. You just so happened to leave out the end fight of the first Raimi film where it straight up looks like Peter's going to be murdered by Norman. It's brutal and bloody and at times hard to watch. And then the way the backflip over the glider is edited, holy shit, it's just fantastic. And then YOU'RE GONNA SAY THE SWINGING IS BETTER IN THE TASM MOVIES?!?! ARE YOU MAD?!?! They created the fucking SPIDER-CAM for the Raimi movies, allowing it to dip and drop through the city while still swinging back up to follow Spidey effortlessly throughout. I'll probably continue to edit this as I watch the review. Edit: Villains. Harry in TASM 2 is flat, boring, and stupidly over the top with his tantrum. Doc Ock in the second film is tragic and his sacrifice is heartbreaking. Romance. Andrew and Gwen WOULD be adorable if they didn't hold on so many weird and awkward scenes with random head tilts, scoffing, chuckling, and dialogue. While MJ has issues, she's also her own person as well. We see how disfunctional her home life is and why she becomes attracted to Peter, because when she tells him about her dream that everyone else has seemingly laughed at, he tells her it's important and she should follow her dreams. And there's another issue I have with TASMs relationship but I'm gonna get into that in the next point. Spider-Man. Andrew absolutely DOES NOT STICK TO ANYTHING CONSISTENTLY. He cannot leave Gwen the fuck alone and stalks her constantly, while also pushing her away over and over. Which I understand happens in the Raimi trilogy, but it happens over the course of 3 films, not over and over again in one. Of course it's harder to see Tobey's Peter as Spider-Man because that's the point. The TASM movies biggest flaw is that they make it Peter's destiny to be Spider-Man, completely shitting all over the character. The point was that it could've happened to anyone, and Peter had the misfortune of it happening to him. That's why Tobey is so compelling, because this kid who GROWS into a struggling, living paycheck to paycheck man decides to continue being Spider-Man. He doesn't quit because it's hard, he quits because he was having an identity crisis which made him lose his powers and even powerless, he rushes into a BURNING BUILDING TO SAVE A CHILD!! Tobey's Spider-Man was not only more accurate to the character, but was more compelling and interesting than Andrew's cocky, mean-spirited asshole. I love you NC but I have a difficult time believing you saw the original Trilogy again before making this review as your points were generic and completely off base.

Honestly both Tobey's and Andrew's version of Spiderman had valid reasons for quitting. Tobey's reason was that the stresses of being both Peter and Spiderman were becoming too much and caused his body to react causing him to lose his powers. Without his powers he can't be Spiderman, and he thought he lost them forever. Andrew's was due to the fact he lost the love of his life and her father and thought what use is it to be a hero when he can't even save his loved ones. Now as for how the movies showed this and handled their returns, the original showcased how he was adjusting to his normal life and even showed him faced with a decision to either stop a mugging or go on with his day (granted they didn't do that part well) and when he returned it's because his powers came back along showing her never wanted to give it up to begin with and gets into a fight that nearly kills him. Andrew's shown sitting at home for like a minute and then listens to Gwen's graduation speech (which didn't sound like a graduation speech at all and was just a speech designed specifically to sound motivational for him) and then he's back to saving people and we don't even get to see the fight.

“Spiderman quit because it was too hard”. Seriously Doug that was barely a surface level analysis. You went over Andrew Garfield with a fine tooth comb but ignored everything that was explicitly shown too you when it came to Tobey. He quit because being Spiderman was ruining his life. His relationship with his friends were suffering, his grades were suffering, he lost one of his jobs, barely being able to pay for rent, and on top of all that he lost his powers! Being Spiderman at that point would be a suicide mission. AND DESPITE ALL THAT he still ran into a burning building risking his life to save a little girl. Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman ignored the dying wishes of his girlfriends father which inevitably led to her death, and then quit because of it! You want him to be the protector of your city rather than Tobey’s Spiderman? Come on man.

Charming, Quippy, Confident, Energetic. That first car thief scene in TASM1 IS amazingly Spider-Man. Tobey however, IS Peter Parker; got the nerdyness DOWN. I just can’t get behind his spider-man. Every quip sounds completely unnatural and undertoned with nervousness. This this video gets one thing for sure: Tobey is the perfect Peter Parker and Andrew is the perfect Spider-Man.

I can agree with most of this, except the last part. When Nostalgia Critic asks "Which Spiderman would you rather be?", my answer is "Garfield, because the only real difficulty in his life is being a superhero. Maguire had to deal with a lot of real-world shit that most people would love to skip." This is why Maguire's Spiderman is more relatable: he actually has to deal with everyday life, and it's hard, even though he has super powers. It shows that he is one of us, and (as Aunt May says) we all have a bit of a hero inside of us. It makes him relatable. Not everyone is a scientific genius with a hot scientific girlfriend who is madly in love with us and is super supportive. However, most of us have gone through struggling to keep a job, struggling with finances, and struggling with a relationship. That's what makes Maguire more relatable, and therefore, in my opinion, a better character. That, and the fact being a snarky jackass is his exception, not his norm.

Most of us have gone through a loss, as well as tried to be there for the ones we still have. We also try and be a better person after each faliure or success; new films simply have a better overarching continuity. It feels unnatural and forced when Tobey makes a quip, cause he's given little time to actually gain this much confidence. Even by the end of the first movie, he still is relatively unsure of himself. With Garfield, he's like that already, so it makes more sense, coupled with the fact that his jokes are funnier.

Yeah I feel like Doug missed this one. Tobey's Peter Parker was so awkward and hard to accept as Spiderman, but being able to look at that side of him and changing to a successfully free-spirited, energetic, Spiderman really gives the movie more depth. It shows he's more comfortable being Spiderman (who he really is). And that being Peter Parker is as anxious and emotionally volatile as the common person is.... without super powers. but much more amplified because he's holding himself back. What really sold the old Spiderman for me was the fact that there were such defined locations and showed a livelihood on the ground and not swinging between buildings all the time. There were birthday parties, offices, a train, labs, dining rooms, theatres, a festival, a bank, a restaurant, a church. All well defined and hard to forget. The newer Spiderman didn't feel like there were a lot of locations used to create memorable scenes, I felt like there was more scenes of him swinging from building to building way too often. And who can forget the importance of how a good sound track compliments the scenes? I don't say it to sound like a fanboy, but as a critic I still will go with the old Spiderman, without hesitation.

OK no. I draw the line at you saying Toby quit being spiderman cause it was 'hard'. personally I find the both of them incomparable and I love them equally. but the whole point of the second Toby movie was to break spiderman. it wasn't just hard, it was practically impossible. everything in his life was going against him. he was losing his job. not making enough money. aunt may was struggling financially as well. he was failing his university classes (which isn't a joke) because he was just so exhausted and quitting wasn't even a thought until his powers started shutting off. you can't complain about the second movie being spiderman feels so lost when the whole point is in fact that that he WAS lost. that's like going into a star wars movie and being disappointed that they have jedis. what made the second movie so amazing was that it addressed how depressingly exhausting and unrewarding life as a superhero was and whether it was worth the effort. especially for someone like Peter who was definitely just a simple everyday guy going through the same issues and problems. not a billionaire with limitless resources. not a soldier out of time with government backing and support. the third definitely messed that up and repeated way too many things. but it doesn't feel fair to undermine the progress made by the second because of it.

Nail hit squarely on the head. I found that much more relatable than the AS-M because while I can identify with the idea of stopping because of the loss of a loved one, that is what propels Peter Parker to become Spider-Man in the first place. And honestly, for all that they tried to be the more serious movies I found Gwen's death a bit goofy. But with the original series, Peter giving in as Spider-Man because his life was rapidly becoming a train wreck and he needed the space to breathe is absolutely more identifiable. Nearly everyone goes through something similar at one point or another where the momentum just builds up and something has to give. For Peter, it was being Spider-Man. Also, the originals have J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. That's an automatic win in my book.

WAIT WAIT WAIT Mcguire just quit cuz it was hard? He quit because he wasn't sure if he wanted to keep being a super hero. He started because he wanted to get revenge for his uncle's death and then kept doing it to protect those in need. However, no matter how many times he saved people, either more bad guys would show up, or the public would say he was a menace because of the rhetoric of J. Jonah Jameson. He wasn't sure if he was actually making a difference and he thought that maybe people had a point. Spiderman has had that character arc in so many different adaptations. They even did it in the Ultimate Spiderman tv show. Spiderman quitting because he was grieving is out of character, and like just think of all the lives he could have saved in a version of the city that doesn't hate him all because he was depressed.

I disagree strongly about Andrew being the best Spiderman. Who is the one I looked up to as Spiderman? It's not Andrew Garfield's, and I enjoyed his movies. It's Tobey Maguire's Spiderman that I looked up to more. His Spiderman was the one that acted more like a true hero. Unlike Garfield's, Maguire's Spiderman truly felt like he knew the heavy responsibility he carried with his powers. At first, Peter used his powers for financial gain, participating in a wrestling tournament. He showed that he is strong, you know that he's capable of stopping anyone. But he decided not to stop the thief out of revenge. If he didn't think about himself and revenge, he could've prevented someone, like his uncle, from getting killed that night. Granted the same thing happened with Garfield's, but he never seemed guilt-ridden. The reason being is because he didn't test out his powers. He doesn't know that he could've probably taken that guy out. Peter wasn't put in a situation where he knew what he was capable of stopping the thief. After all, he was just denied milk rather than being denied $10,000 after beating a guy who was 3x bigger than he was. And for the ending of the first movie, you may be frustrated that Tobey's Peter turned down MJ, but he did that because he realized that his loved ones will get hurt if his enemies found out who he was. He even had a taste of that with Aunt May and Mary Jane nearly getting killed by Green Goblin. And Tobey's Spiderman made that hard choice himself. Again, Gwen's dad had to make Andrew's Spiderman promise to stay away from Gwen. Which to his credit, he does... and immediately breaks it. Andrew's Spiderman is a bit too cocky for me, and a lot more selfish than what I'd expect from a hero. And for giving up Spiderman. You can't be serious if you say Tobey's quit just because it was "hard". Tobey's Peter's life was crappy! Lost his job, lost the girl, aunt in financial trouble, losing his best friend, and failing classes and why? Because he's too busy being a superhero. The life of a superhero ain't easy, and it shows. But he continues because that's his curse, and his promise to Uncle Ben. He sacrificed a lot of things just to keep the city safer. But that came to a head when he was losing his powers. With his powers waning, Peter saw an out. He could keep his social life intact, keep his grades up, and have a slightly better life without the added stress of being a hero. And this was not an easy decision for him, as he breaks his promise to his uncle, mentally having the image of letting him down again. As for Garfield's, goodness. He was willing to leave New York with Gwen for England. Giving up his hero career just to be with his girlfriend. Sweet and romantic, but heroic? That decision doesn't sound like anything that would benefit the city of New York at all. It will only benefit himself and Gwen, and possibly England. But what happens in England? They got James Bond for that stuff. And then after Gwen's death, he stops being Spiderman?! Sure, he couldn't save the love of his life, but that shouldn't stop him from doing what he does! I understand if he mourns for a day or a week, but not months! The only thing that made him come back was just hearing Gwen's grad speech that seemed aimed at heroes than graduating high school seniors. But that shouldn't be what makes him come back. Peter now has two people taken away from him, Uncle Ben and Gwen, due to him being selfish, and for not being careful about his relations. He could've used these experiences to become the real Spiderman; use his powers for the benefit of the city, and to absolutely keep is identity a secret from both foes and loved ones. Tobey's Peter felt more like a hero because he made decisions for the benefit of the citizens of New York. He lives a crappy life, but deals with it because his responsibility of keeping New York safer is more important to him. Peter could still win wresting matches and make money, but knows that would be a misuse of his gift. Denies himself the happiness to be with MJ to keep her safe. Andrew's Peter makes his decisions out of pride and desires. Gets called out for only going after look alikes, decides to be a hero. Told to stay away from Gwen, still goes out with her. (I will mention that I left out that he dumped her in TAS2, but still stalks and goes out with Gwen again.) Quits being Spiderman because he couldn't save Gwen. And hell, forgot to mention he revealed that he was Spiderman to her. Andrew's Peter is more the guy people would like to be, but Tobey's Peter is more of the man people should be.

The originals might have cheesier fighting, but you felt the importance of the actual conflict between the characters. The new movies’ characters are so bad and poorly developed that the fight scenes, while visually good, are just a bunch of weightless, empty nonsense.

The Fast and Furious movies would beg to differ. I agree that being invested in the characters greatly elevates an action scene, however suggesting that not being invested renders every action scene as 'just a bunch of nonsense' no matter how well staged they are isn't just daft, but its kinda insulting to the tireless work that goes into properly staging them. You're basically saying to the stunt and VFX crew, "The characters are shit, so your work means nothing." Strong visuals can be just as compelling as good writing and since action scenes and characters are just forms of visuals and writing the same rule applies. In a good movie the two should complement each other, but even if they don't that doesn't cancel the other one out entirely.

Neither were initially motivated by responsibility. That's all part of the lesson. It's a character progression which people just mistake that the movie crew forgot about the finding the killer subplot. Peter actually starts off as a revenge seeking bully only to find a father at risk of losing his child, mirroring Peter and his losses. It is infact here where Peter learns being Spider-Man is not about taking revenge, it's about ensuring no one ever goes through what he did. This being the reason why I thoroughly enjoy the first TASM film, the bridge scene in particular. It oozes with character.

For the people in the comment section saying that “Tom Holland wins” First of all, he’s literally the least accurate live action Spider-Man, Ik a movie doesn’t need to be comic accurate to be a good movie, HoCo is a good movie but it handled the character horribly. 2nd. Homecoming lacks consequences except in the last act he only gets suit taken away that’s all, there was no peril at losing his loves ones at all. 3rd. There was no Uncle Ben, and people always say that “It’s not an origin story, we don’t need to see him die again” “It takes place months after Uncle Ben died so it wouldn’t make sense if see Peter talk about him again” it pisses me off so much when i hear those things, people are forgetting that Spectacular Spider-man (Animated TV show that aired in Cartoon Network) additionally took place months after Uncle Ben’s death and handled the character super well without forgetting the consequential elements of the character. 4th. The only reason it gets that much support is because it’s from the MCU and because MCU fangirls find Tom Holland “hot”, I have no problems with them fortifying him for whatever reasons they like but when they say “he’s the most comic accurate one” that’s what i always find wrong Tom Holland is a great actor and was probably a great choice if they made the MCU one like Ultimate Spider-man, Him and Ultimate Peter have the same physique, Jon Watts ruined the impeccable opportunity.

What would've helped improve Spider-Man by the end of Homecoming is making him realize he no longer needs to do his hero work to impress Tony Stark, but to just do it for the good of the people. He could distance himself from the Avengers and no longer idolize Tony, but still harbor some respect for them and what they do. They could've handled it so much more maturely, but they didn't.

The crying can be annoying, but Tobey's Spider-Man is still best in my eyes. Not that I think Tobey gives the best performance or is the best actor (cuz I don't), but the way has character was written best showed who the character is at his core. The character of Peter Parker is a person who believes "with great power comes great responsibility". This Spider-man shows the burden that comes with. His best friend thinks his alter ego murdered his father, his crush who he had the chance to be with thinks he's unreliable because he's never around. He has trouble being their support his only living relative who needs his help. He begins to suffer academically because he can't keep up with school work. His boss is always trying to smear his character. Despite his personal life suffering he continues to be a hero because he learned the consequences of not using his power for good. Garfield's Spider-Man never really felt like he sacrificed much. His Aunt didn't seem to need him and he was in a great relationship from very early. Tobey's Peter could have been with MJ at the end of the first film, but he turned her down because he saw what happened to her and his aunt when someone figured out who he was. Andrew's Peter continues to see Gwen even after her dying father asked him no to, so she could be safe. I have the same criticism of Tom's Spider-Man. His Aunt doesn't rely on him. He has a great friend. He has a billionaire as a mentor who built him a suit with an AI in it to help him do everything.

I agree with your statement on tobey. I think that tom's spiderman lives in a different world, more modern and also he isn't the only superhero around (he's more like a boy with powers and a superhero costume than a spiderman, he is more like a spiderboy). I like that his aunt is an independent woman who doesn't need peter's or spiderman's help. I think his struggles are more catered to the world he is in. How does he stay relevant where there are tons of superheros flying around, how does he acknowledges the responsibilities of a superhero despite being just a kid, learning the value of trust and honesty... yea sure he doesn't have the struggles young adults have, he has more teenager struggles and that's oki imo.

@@bendovbloch7630 I like Tom's Spiderman for the MCU. I think his character is getting better as he gets older and more independent. I'm glad they made changes to make him different and fresh. However, the entire idea of the character of Spiderman is that "with great power comes great responsibility". This is true for every Peter Parker in the comics. He isn't Spiderman because he necessarily wants to be, but because he feels he has the responsibility to due so. That's the character at his core. I just don't get that strong of a sense from the MCU Spiderman because they never gave his backstory as to why he feels he needs to be Spiderman. They also don't really give him a reason not to Spiderman. IDK I guess I would like to this explored more in future films. Perhaps as he gets older and has more of a complex life to balance.

I agree with everything--except the Tom bit because I haven't seen his movies yet--but I would argue that Garfield's Peter was still punished in a way because Gwen ended up dying, and he eventually had to recover from that and face responsibility once again because he couldn't quit.

To everyone complaining about Spiderman 2's way of Peter not being Spiderman; In the old movies, he loses his job, he goes broke, still has to pay rent so he has a place to live, and knows that the girl he has a crush on is going to marry someone else. Because of that his confidence goes down. He stops being Spider-Man for _30 minutes._ In The Amazing Spider-Man, he promises Gwen not to be Spider-Man anymore, then Gwen dies. He stops being Spider-Man for about 5 minutes, then goes to "fight" The Rhino. *_STINGS, DOESN'T IT?_*

Um.. But actually in movie time, Peter quits being spider-man in the Amazing Spider-Man for about ten months, I don't know, I forgot. But he does return as spider-man, realizing he should the past as the past, and focus on what he loves doing, being spider-man and being a hero

I peraonally think the old Spiderman movies were better than the Amazing Spiderman movies. The villians had more depth. The story made more sense. And Maguire stayed true to the character more than Garfield did. Peter Parker is a nerd. Spiderman is a hero.

Honestly, I feel like Peter Parker should be a shy and awkward nice guy outside of the mask, but once he puts the mask on, he lets loose a bit. He makes jokes, he says things he wants to say but wouldn't normally. The anonymity of the mask gives him the freedom to be who he wants to be.
