I am a Composer for over 30 years. For a long time I looked at M. Jackson as the "King of Pop (Composers)". Than I discovered Band Maid, and I just bow for Kanami and her Melody/Chord Work. You, Sir, did a fantastic job with this Doku!!!

Even after all those years, Kanami is still a mystery to me. If I didn't knew the band and haven't seen them live, I would be tempted to think this whole story is fiction, "too good to be true" and that such a character is like the best invention of the best mangaka ever. But no, she's a real person, incredibly unassuming for a rockstar (... except with guitar in hand) and at the same time very conscious of her work. I love to read her interviews. I'm convinced her main strength is that she naturally thinks "outside of the box", but in a very organized and structured way. That's why she always surprises us, with her behaviour, answers and most of all: music. There's a word starting with "G" and ending with "enius" for that.

I'm a 40-year-old, and music has always been the most loyal and important companion in my life for as long as I can remember. In all these years I have listened to quite a few artists across all kinds of genres. However, when I became aware of a certain band by chance 3 years ago, one of these outstanding musicians spoke to me with her instrument as no other musician had ever done before her. And that musician is Kanami Tōno. As Champ put it in his commentary, it's hard to point a finger at exactly the reason why this is, but from the first solo I heard from her in the MV for 'Thrill' back in the day, I just knew she is special. This was confirmed with every additional song I heard from them, and I think it was the fourth song I heard at the time that she finally had me wrapped around her skilled little fingers, as her playing in 'Daydreaming' gave me teary eyes for the first time. About her past and that she is the origin of most of the songs, or what a good-hearted person she is, I only learned some time later when I started to take a closer look at the persons who turned my music world basically upside down within 4 minutes. Needless to say, this increased the connection between their music and me even more. As time went on, I came to appreciate each of these ladies and what they do and their human side, but in the end, it's Kanami who will always stand out a bit more for me, even if she doesn't actually want to. :) Once again, thank you for this great series! 🙏🏻 _____________________ 「 _'Our rock never dies ever. What is it about Kanami's writing/arranging/performing? Someone asked her in an interview what she was thinking about when she wrote so-and-so song back when. The answer was always, "Oh, I really don't remember." To me, that answer again and again had little to do with her memory. What I saw from that is that she is someone who can continue to create new things because she's never sentimentally attached to what she's done in the past. She creates, releases, and move on to the next thing.

I think Champ and Ryan sum it up best. It is almost impossible to describe what you feel while listening to Kanami play. No other guitarist/band has ever made me feel like this. I just wonder if she or any of the band members understand how really important their music is to so many of us. I have seen people argue that she is not an elite guitarist. Technically they are correct, there are probably thousands of others that can play faster, do more technical things, just "better" overall. At the end of the day, that doesn't matter. If i had to pick one person to be on stage playing before me, it would 100% be Kanami. I really love that last line, these ladies don't just treat this as a band, this is their life and do everything they can to support each other. Also FYI, I cried like a baby watching this.

I had never been brought to tears by a guitar solo until I heard Kanami. She can speak directly to a persons soul via her guitar. When she plays she doesn't sound like anyone else on the planet. Her composition skills astound me constantly. The word genius can get overused, but our dear little Mincho is the real deal. And to think she is just improving and getting better at what she does month on month, year after year. She is astonishing. I am so happy to be around to witness what she does and where she is going to take us in the future.

I really like what Champ had to say about Kanami's playing. Guitar is a relatively easy instrument to play. Almost anyone can pick up a $50 guitar at a yard sale, teach themselves five chords, and be able to play hundreds of songs around a campfire (and *you* should do it - it's a blast and you might impress your future mate). But to elevate your playing so you express your emotions is much harder. The instrument you choose to play doesn't make it any easier. Here is an analogy. Did you ever have a teacher who really knew their subject, and it was a subject you were really interested in, but they just put you to sleep? They droned on and on and on with a monotone voice with no passion and no inflection at all. What about that teacher who was passionate about their subject, and even if it was something you didn't really care about, you got involved? And, the more they spoke the more you wanted to learn? There are guitarists that "know the big words" but their playing is dull. They might be able to play with incredible speed but the speed never varies, they play with machine-like precision but it's robotic and unfeeling. They play loud but it's always loud, there is no sense of journey. There is no emotion. There is no sense of leaving home and discovering a new unseen world out there. Kanami does this. She's certainly not the *only* guitarist who does it, but there aren't that many. Let's look at a recent example. Here is a short exerpt from the Genshin Impact channel on youtube, a video titled "GENSHIN CONCERT 2022 'Melodies of an Endless Journey', starting at 4:15 kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqal1cOIaabMYrA.html It is a simple melody called "Memories of Wind and Wine". The melody is similar to the ancient English melody "Greensleeves" (although it has been altered, personalized). The first time Kanami plays finger-style and shows exactly what Champ is talking about - she makes her guitar sing. How? She varies the volume, she varies speed, she connects notes. She expresses herself. But since you're already watching, keep listening to the second half of the theme were Misa expands the melody on bass. She plays the same way, turning a piece of wood and wire, magnets, capaciters and resistors, tubes and speakers, into a human voice. She slides from note to note, connecting words into phrases, and phrases into sentences. Of course, it has to get the Band-Maid treatment and that means Akane gets involved. She kicks off a medium tempo second verse, and Kanami does it again. She makes yuur heart sing and Misa is supplying counterpoint on bass. The final verse, Akane kicks it up a notch and shows how she can make drums just as musical as the Kanami's guitar and Misa's bass. By the way, the backing track almost certainly was written and performed by Kanami as well. But listen quick. It's over after 2'50". But they took you on a journey, didn't they?

Kanami’s solos are perfect in the fact that they come in at just the right time, go off like a firework, never overstay their welcome and simultaneously surprises but is always the exact thing you want to hear from that solo and once you hear it, you can’t imagine it being anything else. It’s been a long time since someone wrote such finely in tune solos that capture the feeling and energy of the song. And this isn’t even her best songwriting skill; that would be her ability to turn a bridge, something usually used merely to soft reset a song and gain anticipation for the next part, and this overlooked segment becomes the highlight of the entire song. The best part of a song being the bridge is not a common occurrence.

She's technically brilliant, but that's not uncommon today, particularly in the Japanese scene. What makes her special as a musician is her ability to compose and layer in insanely technical playing without overwhelming the songs, allowing them to be enjoyed by music nerds like myself and people who just want a good rock song. Absolutely the best in the business today, IMO.

She changed my mind about music and the way i am listening to songs... Of course she is an outstanding guitarist, but her songwriting is just something else... IMO we have three HUGE composers in our generation and that is: Hans Zimmer, John Williams and KANAMI TONO (not in a particulary order). As you can see the other two composers creating soundtracks for movies and won Oscars. That is how high i rate and value Kanami´s songwriting, she does not care about genres, knows how to give everbody a spot, how to place solos without distraction and is SO CREATIVE! IF i had to choose who my favorite bandmember is, it would be Kanami, just because she touched my heart and soul through her guitarplaying and songwriting!

"A Miracle Po!"..is.. truly that!..A Miracle!.....Things could have been so different...Even after the band was formed...with members having second thoughts (MISA comes to mind)..or even before joining!..All of them!.. except Kanami....It's not to say the band that never was wouldn't of been good..or even have any kind of charm....but would it of been the same?..Absolutely not!..I have no doubt in my mind this was a miracle waiting to happen..It just needed a spark from a crazy 810 year old pigeon Po!..She gathered the fire wood and put a match to it...And those unassuming pieces of wood started to burn. Each piece adding it's own unique flame to create a fire to warm the hearts of us all...To burn bright in a world where darkness was all around..A beacon of hope to show us the way home and that all is not lost....Saying that... Akane was my first draw...her drumming just blew me away!..(drum guy)....She was and is AWESOME!! behind that small kit...And all done with a beautiful smile......But then Kanami stole my heart...Sorry Akane..😞.....But I will forever be grateful to Miku for her pursuit of her dream of awesome ladies playing awesome music....Every member is special..and I will repeat.."A Miracle Po!"🥰

There's a lot of things about Band-Maid that ticks the checklist for me as a band. But Kanami is what kept me. She is my queen. As a member of Gen X, I've watched rock and pop music in the US either die on the vine or slowly degenerate into auto-tuned, droning, slop. Kanami Tono has the ability to speak to my feelings in ways I've never experienced before in my life. Her technique and style is her own, she does not sound like anyone else. Together with Band-Maid she creates epic music as the other members put their touches to Kanami's compositions. MISA's basslines are as legendary as Kanami's riffs. Akane's drumming is second to none. Miku lays down solid rythm guitar work at live servings, and she writes great lyrics. Saiki adds melody and feeling to Miku's lyrics as the lead singer, and together with Miku's choruses and double vocal lines they create the very distinct vocal sound of Band-Maid, which is also second to non, as they are the best vocal pair in the last 30 years. Adding all this together is what makes Band-Maid the best hardrock band in existence, if not ever, and I stick with that 🙂

Kamami is a truly brilliant guitarist, not super technical but plays with great emotion and has created some of the finest solos in the history of rock. Her personality is complex. I believed and still do that she is something of a musical savant which goes some way to explaining the dual on off stage personas, but increasingly I think the true Kanami is not the dippy, shy, lovesick child - that is created for fun and gives her great interview theatre. The real Kanami is an organised workaholic whose life is her music and she probably thinks of not much else. The on stage rock goddess gives her an outlet for the music in her head, hence the endless riffs. but her real genius is as a composer. She is already working well beyond 'rock' and thanks to the extraordinary talent of her band mates, she will be producing more and more outstanding music in the coming years. For once unique is the correct description. I listen to her with awe and huge respect.

I've seen her live recently, and I can tell you, she really changes personality once she starts playing. She becomes extremely aggressive and powerful, even to the point of exhaustion. Idk if it was joke but she had to take a couple mind break backstage after a performance and the other members joked that she was sleeping. Absolutely amazing on stage

Kanami is the best example of what is necessary if you dream of being a great musician. All young artists should look to her example. Don't let the naysayers and haters distract you. Everything else I could say about Her has already been said and all I can do is wholeheartedly agree.

I find I get caught up in the fascination of Kanami's guitar playing but 20 or 30 years from now, what she'll be remembered for is her composition skills. If someone were to arrange some of her songs for orchestra right now, they would be outstanding and loved by a huge audience.

Wow!! Thanks. I'm here tearing up like a "blubbering fool." As a guitarist I have always thought Kanami was special..... for me, but this presentation only confirms my thoughts that I'm not the only one who thinks this. Seriously........ If Netflix can do a F%&king 2 hour documentary on ANVIL, they really need to do one on Band-Maid. Love this band.

The coolest guitarist I've ever seen in my life among all known guitarists. A young woman who could pass for an ordinary person but full of kindness, humility and who becomes a talented rock star on stage, without the arrogance and sufficiency that many pretentious guitarists show, while keeping her human qualities. My guitar hero. Thanks Ohrenje.

What can I say about Mincho that hasn’t already been said? She is special. She may not be the greatest guitarist in the world, but she is my favourite. Her attitude… she doesn’t realise how talented she is. So humble. Always pushing herself to be better, and pushing the other band members. She has taught Miku everything she knows about guitar playing and made Miku a very talented guitarist in her own right. Mincho is amazing.

Nice work. Some information I did not know about. No mention of Carlos Santana? Supposedly one of the reasons to switch to a PRS guitar. I wonder if Addictone still makes her signature model?

Loved this installment of the series, which if there were any justice, would appear soon on HBO or Netflix. Nice that you got a few talking heads in the mix, so now you can say it's a legit docuseries, lol. Agreed with all the Guys, especially regarding the fact that Kanami absolutely thinks in compositional terms, ensuring that everyone has an active role.

Fantastic. Kanami is like a little sister until she plugs in her guitar and then. Your face starts melting, her guitar screams and music happen. The story of all of Band Maids members is unbelievable. All put together by one little pigeon with an Eagles appetite to see her dreams come true. Not know her dreams would pull four others into hers and her own dreams. Fate? An alignments of all things musical? I am just glad I can be part of their journey into greatness, by just listening.

Beneath the charming, naive and timid facade, I sense a small volcano. (She is said to have slammed her fist into the wall when Miku and Saiki were late for a rehearsal on one occasion.) It doesn't make her any less interesting, quite the opposite. In short: A multifaceted woman and impressive musician and composer in every way.

We need T-shirts of that BREKIN' NEW GATE illustration👍😁 But one minor change is needed. "Torii" (鳥居) should be placed behind the door Miku is kicking. Maids are five goddesses, so it is appropriate for them to go through "Torii" from the center (the center of Torii is considered as the pathway for Gods. Note: there are 8 million different Gods in Japan😏). But breaking the door at Torii is very rude behavior (although there is no door at Torii, I believe). As we all know, our Maids are some what strange but never been rude😉

I am totally in awe of Kanami and her playing. I know it's just a coincidence, but I also play a PRS as my main guitar. Maybe she likes the smaller neck and body? :) Kanami cited Carlos Santana as an influence, but I don't necessarily hear him in Kanami's playing. Instead I hear a seamless blend of many different influences, all different, and you can't cite one song/solo and say "that's Kanami's style". I also love the tones she uses, many different ones. On one album, I think I heard a unamplified electric being strummed, and mic'ed as the main guitar part, which I haven't heard since this one Samiam song that I really enjoy. Kanami is truly a master (mistress?) and a musical genius! Thanks Ohrenje for this video, looking forward to the next one! Which member of Band-Maid will be next?

Thank you guys for this wonderful portrait and homage of Kanami; an exceptional musician, composer, complete guitar player and human nature. I absolutely love everything about Kanami and she made it up there in my pantheon of greatest musicians ever. Every of her note has a meaning - no bullsh** - with absolute lyricism and taste. Kanami is the perfect match of technique, emotion, and musicality.
