Old Ukrainian Tanks Do Double Duty As Battlefield Artillery Near Bakhmut

Ukrainian tank crews in the eastern Donetsk region are using retrofitted T-64s, designed in the 1960s, to shell Russian troops. They fire from hidden positions using coordinates provided by drones. When massed Russian infantry attacks, Ukrainian tanks move directly onto the battlefield.

I don't expect RFE to be experts on the Ukrainian tank industry but you should probably do your homework before you write something embarrassing like that again. Just because a tank has the number 64 in its name doesn't mean it was built in the 1960's. Russia's T-62's, on the other hand, actually are old pieces of junk that were obsolete before the Iron Curtain fell. That's probably why you're so confused.

    Yes it takes years, but necessity makes quick work. There will be a lot of accidents, but with all the weapon systems that Ukraine has now that they did not have before, they will learn on them and quick. They will train for as many hours in the day as it takes to handle them appropriately. I know there is a difference between land vehicles be they artillery or HIMARS, etc, but they also have pilots and they will adapt given the opportunity. So let’s give them the weapons and the instructions and let them figure it out. They have not failed yet.

That's why the EU-countries that were asked via referendum whether they wanted an association treaty with Ukraine (when such a thing as referenda was still allowed), all voted no. Such was the common conception of Ukraine not a few years ago, and the only thing that changed is 1) you're at war, 2) it probably got worse and here's the big one that counts: 3) the way the media reports on it.

    The risk is to rapidly wear out the barrels. They were not conceived to do such a "pure" and continuous artillery job. Although this could also be an intelligent way to employ tanks that are too old/outdated for a direct use against the more modern Russian models.

    In fact, t64 is an improved/refurbished version of t62; also Russian t72 and t82 are, but their development continued much further in time than t64's one. And t90 is a fully contemporary and good tank. Not to count the weight of bare numbers. Although not used in a proper way by the Russian army in the first stages of the war, I think it is quite irresponsible to bask in the idea that they'll never learn to improve their tank capacities and that things will always follow to run as they have done until now. The combination of Materialschlacht, greater numbers and slightly better material (regarding armour and ordinary artillery), if combined with tactical and operational improvement, could still turn the tide in favour of Russia. I'm totally pro-Ukraine, as most of the people following this channel are, and specifically for this reason in my opinion an objective evaluation of Russian real capacities would be much more useful than the usual "everything-will-go-well" propaganda hiding Russian pros as well as Ukrainian faults. As a famous old-school Italian football coach used to say, don't say cat until you have it in the sack.

    It’s fascinating to see how accurate atgm and artillery fire can render Tanks useful only as mobile mortar chassis; it’s as if the revolution of the tank - which eliminated trench warfare - is effectively neutralized, and thus without a known replacement for armored Calvary, they’ve reverted back to WW1 tactics since that’s the furthest period on record where armored blitzkrieg tactics were just as costly as they are now

  • @fatmandoobius

    @fatmandoobius

    Using tanks for indirect fire isnt a new concept nor a result of ATGM's it's about adding more indirect fire guns to the theater. The US were doing it in Korea for example you can find training films on how to prepare a tank for use in an indirect fire role. Ukraine is definitely outnumbered when it comes to artillery volume so this is how you equalise it. The downside is tank barrels aren't meant for the volume of fire artillery does so it will ware out the barrels faster. Hence why you do it with old tanks, less of an issue if they break down. The tank hasn't been neutralised in this war, it's role in warfare is changing to more of an exploitation and rapid advancement role rather than breakthrough. Something the Russians are slow to pick up on. Which really is the story of the tank in general. It's always supposedly going obsolete come each war or new technology but the reality is it's just evolved each time to a new role. Remember there was a time it was argued making a tank faster than walking speed was pointless because it's job was to support the infantry why would it need to go racing off alone. Look how that turned out.

  • @yousaidthusly461

    @yousaidthusly461

    @@fatmandoobius Still can’t wrap my head around the idea that Russia send god knows how many armored divisions straight to Kiev only to get them stalled. It’s like their brains collectively stalled like their vehicles. Even though the Ukes took out their light vehicles and purposely stalled them, they shouldn’t have had them stationary in that column to begin with; shoulda spread out after “crossing the Ardennes” to avoid the very thing that happened. I mean how different would the Second World War have been if Germany held their light tanks in a column and parked em for a week outside Paris waiting for France to surrender? We would be making jokes about “Superior German Stategic Thinking” to this day, instead of “Lol France Surrender Bad” memes. Clearly Russia forgot what tanks are supposed to be used for. Either that or they want to lose all this manpower and machinery. As for tanks, I don’t think this is their end, it just means they will be adapted in some way, probably lighter, cheaper, easy to repair/replace, and more autonomy. Because if even the heaviest, most offensive tanks can be taken out by drones, arty, planes, or even common foot soldiers, then less resources will go into Tank development, at least not into Superheavy MBTs, not unless they have the equivalent to a defensive force-field and superior mobility

    @@yousaidthusly461 There's a lot at play as to why it was a mess during the opening days to really type out. The underlying cause and problem is Russian corruption and secrecy. The guys on the ground didn't expect to really go in. They were kept in the dark and had no indications they would be, so you have tanks running out of fuel a day or into the invasion because guys were selling it to locals for Vodka. Them getting lost as they were never really briefed on the plan. Then there's the general culture of everyone is on the take and everyone willingly lies and if you don't join in your ostracized for being that weird guy that thinks he's legit. You can buy whatever you want in Russia it's just a matter of how much and knowing a guy. That includes military hardware. It's then hidden thanks to the culture of everyone joining in on the BS charade to avoid headaches for themselves. You've got commanders lying left and right about how it's go adding to the mess and doing their best to cover it up and make it go as best they can with the resources they have. Those at the top know it's happening but also know they can't really expose one without the rest. They're destroying themselves from the inside out with their own corruption. On the tanks front. Probably a mix of both. High tech in small numbers low cost in mass. Gotta remember although the Russians are getting mauled by ATGM the west always expected something similar would come from Russia so their is countermeasures in place and being developed. With things like thermal camouflage and trophy aiming to shoot them down. Not to mention ERA and cage armour actually deployed on mass might have helped. The thing that's really shown the future of war is small cheap drones acting as low risk recon. Knowing where your enemy is before they know where you are is a massive advantage to have and it's really underappreciated by those watching on the side lines. It's all about the mighty ATGM and HIMARS but Drones and artillery are so damn helpful at this point in the war. I've seen footage of them literally walking artillery into trenches with a drone spotting above. Russians are just sat their none the wiser it's zeroing in or how at times.

    As a father and soldier it would be comforting to know that your family was in safety, for good reason as russia continues it terror campaign against civilian targets, and women and children are constantly dying in Ukraine. Now what is your opinion of the russian men (around 2 million) who have fled russia?

    @@artmcteagle About 700,000 people left Russia, half of whom returned after mobilization. I know this because I have friends in Russia with whom I am in contact. Almost everyone there supports Putin. I am not on any side in this war because I know what the Ukrainians did to the Russians these 9 years and I know what the Russians are doing to the Ukrainians now

    Seems like a new form of artillery take is in the works of being developed. If using tanks like artillery is effective then many smart generals and companies will be looking into the concept a lot more.

    @Philosophy_First it also ruins the barrel extremly fast , 125mm barrel of T64 has around 1k HE rounds of lifespan (other rounds degrade barrel usualy faster) when dedicated 152mm artillery battery can reach 8k rounds of lifespan . And keep in mind that little to nobody outside of russia still produce 2A46 barrels that ukraine could get
