Very informative. The other videos about the Sportsman 106 told us a lot about fishing but not much about the boat. You showed us what the hull looked like, how to lower the seat, demonstrated maneuverability in tight spots, and made paddle length recommendations. Very detailed and very well done!

This review never gets old lol. I watch this video numerous times before I made a decision and went with the 120. There were only a 106 and a 120 in my local DSG so I pick up the 120 in ember color. It was the last one they had and won't have another one until fall. I am loving my new Kayak. It is now rigged up with an anchor trolley and fish finder. It is easy to maneuver and fast for its size. Thank you for the reviews.

I'm glad I cam3 across your on water review. I am picking up my 106 tomorrow! I am short at 5'2" so I went with the shorter size. Your video helped me to decide that. Still has plenty space for gear, net, and small cooler. I'm going with the Orange color in the 106, easier to see especially on a roll over dunk. Thanks again!

I have spent the past month looking at numerous kayaks for fishing. I have reviewed dozens and dozens of these videos. This video is by far the best one. I went with the 106 in teal after learning how stable it was. The 106 was the same price as the 12' Perception I was going to get, but the stability/hull design is way better in the 106. Plus, Old Town has been around for a long time - it is rumored that Lewis and Clark mad their trek in Old Town canoes.

Appreciate the kind words, Justin and I both preferred the high seat position. Low will grant more stability for the moving water or heavy loads.

Well done video. I am getting ready for my first fishing sightseeing kayak. Want it simple easy to maneuver haul and don’t need a lot of extra stuff. Something like $1K worth Was at Dicks Sports they had this model with a Minnkota Trolling motor. But was $3500. Way too much for me. I have had boats for years but want to go simple easy affordable and enjoy nature. This looks like y great stable fun model. Would this unit haul in the box 5.5’ long Honda Ridgeline strapped down? Really don’t want to do trailer and over cab just for me. Thanks for a great explanation of a kayak purchase

Man life is crazy, I'm looking to 'invest' in one of these, and in Canada they want $1,200-$1,500 for one. I've seen so many videos where people have multiple $1,000 kayaks, and then $1,000 in gear. I've been looking to move from an inflatable kayak to a rigid one and find your videos to be very well done informative - especially for someone who would have to drive a significant distance in some cases to view models in person. As an angler who is 6'4 240lbs and who fly fishes from a kayak (80% lakes/ 20% moving water), would you have a recommendation between the Jackson Bite, Sportsman 106, or Sportsman 120? I'm referring to the paddle versions. The pedal models are not currently within my budget. Thanks!

Howdy Jeremy, Between those three models because are fly fishing, I would go for the Jackson Bite. The flat clean deck gives you more surface area to throw line imo.

Awesome video, looking at a 10.6 just wondering if u could use this also as a hybrid SUP? I saw you paddle for a bit,ok for a longer period of time?

Thinking about getting this. I live on the gulf coast of FL so how’s paddling with this in currents? Because that’s what I worry about is fighting against currents and being more worn out than enjoying myself. I would love the pedal drive one but it’s just too expensive.

Nice review how much space do you lose in the front of the kayak between the 120 and 106 I'm planning on getting one of the two but looking to put a bow mount trolling motor on it

the hatches are the same size, nose to front hatch on the 120 is 15in, nose to front hatch on the 106 is 10in. Based on different measuring points, the 120 looks to be 3-5in longer.

So say I know somebody that knows somebody, if I could get this boat in the 120 for $450, or the PDL version for under a grand, which should I get? I do more recreational kayaking than fishing, but I think the PDL version would be nice with the plate to cover the hole when I’m not using the PDL.

Buy both it's not even a question at that point! If you think you will be using the pdl frequently absolutely go for it at that price. Both are great though

Is the 120 paddle's speed and/or glide similar to a predator 13 or big water 132 paddle?

Good question, the predator and 132 have more glide and top end speed. The 120 is good for its size though.

Are those gear tracks plastic? Curious about mounting rod holder's for big catfish

They are some of the most robust abs rails I've seen to date. Seem sturdy to me. But I haven't hooked into a 20lb fish either.

I just tested this for you, I was successful in putting two 7'3" rods into both the 120 and 106. The 106 was tight but I still snuck them inside.

Not a specific motor mount that I am aware of. However if I were to attempt mounting I would on back of the kayak behind the tank well where it is flat.

I’m a big girl, 285lbs. I’m looking at the 106. I don’t intend to stand up in it, just ride around and fish some. Will riding in the high position be an issue? Right now I have an Abaco 13.5 and I love it, but in the center seat for riding solo my feet are uncomfortable, so I was looking for one with an open center. I’ve been looking at this particular model for a while now.

With my experience using the sportsman 106, water will be in the cockpit at around 290+. If you are ok with that its fine, however the bigger 120 would keep a dry cockpit at that same weight. If you like open kayaks with closer to a 325lb dry cockpit, also check out the Jackson Bite angler. These are my own usage capacities after testing without compromising the kayaks abilities.

240cm or 250cm is fine, I personally use a 250cm on the Sportsman 120.

Jackson Bite and the Crescent CK1 are more maneuverable and work well on rivers.

I meant to add you answered length of paddle as well I am 5’11”. And special model preferred? Like I mentioned I want simple. No pedal No electric motor. Just a paddle. Thanks

We tend to go with paddles that are around 30 oz or less. They include the Werner Shuna, Aquabound Manta Ray, and the Bending Branches Angler Ace. Lighter in nice.

Do you find the stability to be the same in the 106 vs the 120 or does the 120 have better stability?

They are both quite good imo. My being a bigger guy at 270 the 120 has more surface area on the water, which to me feels more stable when I am standing.

Great video. I am 6”3 and 250lbs, I’m looking for 106 for a while, will there be a lot of water inside kayak? I had a Ascend from Basspro and my butt basically sitting in the water.

Hey thanks, you shouldn't have water inside the deck at 250 lbs in the Sportsman. With the high/low framed seat you will never sit in water again 👍

Did you get the 106 yet? I bought the 106. Was torn between the 106 and 120. The Sportsman Dealer said the 106 would be good for 235 lbs, full gear, a small cooler, small camping tent (in the haul), fishing net, etc., And light weight Orange Crate. You might need some scupper plugs for the holes if you ride heavy in the lower seat position. It depends how minimal you pack your yaks. Hope this helps some.

Depends on what you like, Open concept and better river runner is the Jackson Bite. Traditional kayak setup would be the Sportsman 120.

I always dry bag anything I put inside the hatch, as pin hole leaks do happen.

The Sportsman lineup is very good, I like the paddle and pedal systems.

The 106 for its compact size and ease to handle. The 120 for better flatwater performance and higher carrying compacity to carry your gear.

Alex is 6’ 2” and the leg room was fine. We believe bigger is better for our weights 250 and 275#.

The 120 has better hull speed and tracking, the 106 is more maneuverable.

The full weight capacity is 500 lbs on the sportsman 120

Fishing with a paddle kayak kinda stinks once you go PDL. They should put a rudder on these so you can at least change direction while in the current without putting the rod down and whipping out the paddle.

So im 6 feet 260 lbs mostly muscle which would be better if i plan to bring stuff is the 12 feet more buoyant and is it that slower than the 10.6 or not much diff in water performance

Yes, the 120 will have a higher load capacity and be faster on the water than the 106.
