My dad started driving in the 30s. The West was wide open with few services. I still a picture of him standing by his truck, a Mack B Model, he is in the desert on a 2 Lane Rd, Nothing around. Far off is Camelback Mountain, now in the heart of the Phx Metropolis.

I loved the CB and talkin to the truckers and the almost normal people along my routes. I wuz called 'Model T' back then and drove whatever my company bought . It had to have a CAT engine, of course. Biscuits-N-Gravy, coffee black, and a pertty young waitess in a mini skirt and low slung blouse. Not exactly nuthing but a towel and a smile but sure made my heart warm. I've been to America's first truck stop... and both of what were called America's largest truck stops. First was Little America, I-80 Wyoming. But Walcott, Iowa with the museum is now the largest. also on I-80. None are like those mom & pop real truck stops of long ago.

AWESOME!!! At 2:39 that Autocar has "Pomerenke Truck Line, Yakima, WASH." on it!!! I only live 15 minutes away from there! I grew up in the Yakima Valley and I have seen an old Pomerenke truck in someone's yard before! Great video!

You sure do see a lot more IH trucks in these older videos than You will in a current truck video. I really miss our trucks up thru the 70’s, but once plastic became a common building material in trucks, I lost interest in owning a truck after ‘79.

Cab over trucks became frequent because of length laws. 55 feet overall . Only problem with cabover is the driver is first to the scene of the accident.

Back in '69 I was introduced to the world of truckin in a Ford W short cab. No power steering, No AC, very little heat, and of course crank windows. Driving those during cold Illinois winters was exciting when trying to turn after miles of straight aways on Rt66. A cab over was better watchin girls on signs, in fields, on billboards, and in four wheelers wearin mini skirts.

I remember an example of the “good old days” of trucking. It was a restaurant where you could still get a home cooked style meal. It probably contributed to many a heart attack but everyone wanted that meal. There were two pumps outside, primitive in design, one for diesel and one for gas. You had better fuel and move or there’d be a price to pay. Drivers practiced uncommon courtesy and common sense. The faded signs on the side of the building spoke of the days when a shower and a bunk were available, at a price. Those days were gone. Low powered engines and multiple transmissions were disappearing. Power steering, air bags, radial tires and A/C were becoming more common. Fuel mileage was going up. New trucks were better, more and more freeways were being built and the new truck stops offered so much more, including lots of parking. Then deregulation happened and many things changed, for the worst. By the time I retired, trucks were like Cadillacs and drivers were ignorant and thoughtless. CB 19 was filled with vile, angry worthless information. Good riddance! I needed no unqualified advice to safely drive a truck. CB radios were the worst thing to happen to trucking and contributed to the dumbing down of drivers. J.I.T. made way for millions of idiots to be truckers. I will never forget that homemade meal several decades ago. Pork chop, real mashed potatoes with thick gravy and corn on the cob. Desert? You darn betcha. Homemade apple pie a la mode. Except for the memory of that meal, you can have the good old days of trucking and the crazy days of trucking now!

If they did that today they'd have a stack of paperwork to fill out. I hauled mail in 95 and when I refused to stop for a cop he came to the post office to complain to the postmaster and instead of getting me in shit he found he had a stack of paper to complete before the end of his shift for trying to hold up a mail truck. Besides that the only people who could ask me to open the trailer doors was a federal cop or postal inspector. I was told that if anyone else ever told me to open the trailer doors I should tell him to fuck off.
