Got my first truck a 79 Freightshaker from my dad..miss him a hellava lot more than the truck! But thanks to him cuz still rollin to this day.

Always find your videos interesting! My Grandfather was a trucker and dispatcher for over 50 years. Many of which He ran his own business as an owner operator. He passed away 6 years ago. I wish I would have asked him to teach me how to drive an 18 wheeler before he died ! It would have been a valuable skill to have learned .

My last run in a cabover was in 86, it was a 85 Freightliner, my wife was ready to deliver our daughter any day, well I was in La when that happened, after three days in a truck stop in Ontario Ca I got a load back east, it was to go to Chicago, but I brought it back to Indiana and parked the truck, and never looked back, that was the end of my OTR driving,

i don't know why drivers don't appreciate cab-overs more than they do. They can get into tighter places than other trucks. They do have their purpose.

I have been out of trucking so long that all I ever drove were cabovers, I remember I drove a conventional cab for about a week and was impressed with the difference in the ride

we need to bring them back

I love yesterday's trucks. I was a kid in the glory days of trucking when truckers were considered the good guys of the road; oh what has changed but seeing restored rigs going down the road is wonderful. I see many and with truck prices so high restoration/rebuilding is now a cost effective effort lets just hope the EPA and the Canadian equivalent doesn't spoil that.

My dad drove an old Int Transtar for years and was what I was taught to drive around our farm backing and spotting trailers. The first time I drove a hooded truck was big surprise when I stared backing!!!!!

Always loved cabovers , even as a kid. I'd draw truck pictures in class at school and always drew cabovers. Finally ended up owning two great ones. First, an Astro with an 8V92 475 HP What a sound !!! Music !!! Then a Freightliner, loved that last truck !!

I don't care what anyone says I would drive a cabover anytime

I love these old cabovers. Back in the day it took a real driver to Hurd one cross country. I started out driving a cab over freight shaker in the 70ies. School kids would have a lot of trouble.

Good video, The old cabovers may be back but only in my nightmares. The CO on the cover was once an Atlas Van Lines bedbugger. Been trucking long haul for 70 years now and seen'em all. You young drivers be thankful. Setting over that steer axle for 3000 mi. just aint no fun !!!

My first truck I owned was a 1972 Freightliner. miss her. Thanks for the memories.

Im 18 and im trying to buy myself a 1995 Freightliner cabover for my first truck to start my own trucking company.

When I asked my dad which was better he told me "Simple: Drive in the city, cabover every time. Drive long haul- you want a long-hood".

There is a guy local to me in the Ft Worth area still running an old K100 aerodyne, always seems to be rolling up and down I35. As much as my Petey has oodles of space in the bunk, I would trade it in a second for one of the Euro cabovers I started driving on before moving to the US. Something like a Sisu, Cat motor, ZF trans (sorry but ZF ecosplit is the single best trans I have ever used, puts Eaton to shame), legendary Sisu driveline. With a little bunk and a rear lift axle, totally not needed on Texan roads but I just miss the way they steer.

Love this! Love the old cabovers, although I am not a trucker.

The cab over trucks hold a special place with me. I drove one for a lot of years. Also the music you picked for this is perfect

+Ryan Gahr We had a Cummins engine in our '84 Kenworth... rebuilt it a few times. It was a good engine, very reliable. An old Transtar... a real keeper.;)

here in NZ nearly all our big rigs are COE's.I like them as theres a lot of room in the cab an no disappearing cars at traffic lights,but bonneted trucks do look cool and the odd time Iv driven one,it has been a good ride an theres something reassuring looking out over that long hood.Id truck in either with no preference

Cabovers rule! I have a 95 IH 9670, ex Walmart truck and a 51 REO F22 wrecker. Good to see some cabovers.

While you might not see many working, the style is now becoming a collectors item. For someone who has the funds to restore or refurbish one there are many out there to choose from. Many were still running when parked which would eliminate a huge engine or transmission repair bill. I think had the flat floor come out sooner than the mid 1990s the style would have remained in production longer. Ahhhh such memories.

Love all the cabovers!!!!! A rare breed of truck today. I’m glad to see some here and there as I travel the roads. I still have one...an ol Walmart IH 9670 model.

Wow very cool,i remember the cab over days,don't miss driving them. The last time I drove a cabover was in the late eighties,with JB Hunt,and Fulton trucking,and was glad to get into a conventional.

Thanks for the video - in the early 60s my friend's father owned a small trucking company in rural Virginia. They had 2 or 3 White 3000s and one 5000. We thought that 5000 was the "truck of the future"! Thanks for the memories!!!

Never got to get behind the wheel of a cab over since I started driving in 2002 but they still turn my head when I see one on the road. I've heard the horror stories about them but you just have to appreciate the look of them.

Ran as a mudflap '84- '87 , bedbuggin , NYC to Florida. Was 18 years old. No rules, no limits . Switching seats right over the doghouse between tolls, I-95 @ 55 MPH, Carolinas . 8 hours of sleep for the driver when I drove both States. Got state license in 1988, grandfathered in in 89 when feds took over( CDL). STILL AT IT , automatics killed it. Computers and crash detterant systems , cameras and now sleep apnea bullshit . FINAL STAGES.

I was a mechanic back in 91 for a Denver refrigerated carrier. They ran 150 IH 9600's (?) More than once, I jacked up a cab and had a TV roll out of the bunk, onto the windshield. You also had to watch where you parked your tool box when the cab was jacked up. Saw that happen a couple of times. Changing a clutch in these trucks was a breeze using a cherry picker. The transmission was exposed behind the cab. Shifting was a little funky, due to the short throw shifter, and long linkage.

All these vidios take me back to when I first switched from driving local to long haul an had a brand new frieght liner an.new trailer 350 com a. Alone.13 speed. But never had a chargeable accident safe driver awards 2 an always kelp in that what was behind me could kill. Me very quick an that I not all an a bag of chips.

Thanks for the video. Most cabovers I see today are old used rigs purchased by farmers pulling grain gondolas about this time of the year. I did see an early 80s Peterbilt pull into a former employers' place a few years ago. It had a stretch frame like western states trucks(I'm in the east). Driver polished it while waiting at the dock for the load as if it was a show car at a muscle car event. :-)

+Machi74005 Yes, I find cabover owners are pretty serious about the appearance of their ride. They are usually the ones at the truck shows, who just polish and polish all day long and just never seem to finish the job! They are fantastic trucks, and we love to see them on the road.... rare as hen's teeth on the road, but they'll turn MY head every time. Love to see them.

My first job trucking was a was a cracker box GMC hauling crushed cars had a ten speed road ranger transmission a 238 Detroit engine

I loved my cabovers my first was a brand new 1976 freightliner 400 c 13 spd axle my 2 was a 1979 Pete 2 axle KT 600 c 15 spd best bull truck I ever drove you could set a cup of coffee on the dog house never spill a drop if 5th wheel was in the right spot

Why did they get away from the cab overs? I live in Indianapolis and there's a grain station close to me and they have one they use all the time.

When the Surface Transportation Act made overall length laws obsolete, everyone went to the long hood conventionals because they rode better , were easier to work on and quieter inside. Cabovers were bad in a head on collision and an awful lot of roads were still only two lanes back then. Nobody was buying cabovers anymore and the manufacturers basically discontinued them. Dave

Just one thing. The Peterbilt you have listed as 1997 is a 352, and 1980 was the last year. Maybe '79 instead of '97?

Renault bought the mack cab over but than Volvo made all the good titans but those cruise liners where the best and Metroliners

Nice to see a whole lot of early cabover's, we didn't have them in the uk until the European stuff was imported, never heard of a Marmon is it just something else re badged? thanks for good vid, without intrusive music.

+Ryan P As you can tell, we are NOT fans of LCV'S. The governments and authorities post rafts of rules how they should operate on the roads, but yet they aren't monitored as promised..... trucking companies have their hands in the back pockets of the provincial trucking associations and governing bodies... get my drift? They are dangerous.... usually the only ones to defend the LCV safety is the LCV driver making a lousy few cents extra to drive one. They are getting seriously ripped off and are too foolish to see it.... just our take on the subject.

Cabovers l drove one for 2yaers it was fun back in 1990s now I don't want to kral up in not.wen third a hood to.drive

It would be nice if they brought back the COE but I’m afraid that engineers would just ruin them and make them look ugly.
