Old Rusty Knife Restoration
I set out to restore this antique knife using the same methods and tools that would have been used 128 years ago. I abstained from modern conveniences such as electric tools and instead relied on the tried and true methods of hand and pedal-powered tools.

Quite a transformation! The original shape of the blade reminded me a bit of a paper knife (essentially a blunt blade used in bookbinding) but it had obviously been sharpened a great many times so probably not one of those. I agree, that new handle is really lovely and I don't blame you for wanting to just look at it - such a lovely looking thing.

Wonderful work as always. curly Birch is one of my favourites. Is it hard to sharp these blades? especially, when the wield is bad?
@FFD_Restorations
Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. With appropriate sharpening stones or tools it is not that difficult. But on the other hand sometimes it can be tricky because of laminated blade, especially transition between soft steel and hard steel.

I think it's a butchers knife, for parting out different muscles on a animal. the tip is supposed to have a steep angle towards the end like it had but not broken like it was. nicely done, with the masur birch!

Why did the oil soaking of the handle took a month in the past compared to the day it took you? :)
@FFD_Restorations
Жыл бұрын
Because they build things to last. They would soak wood for 24 hours and dry it one week, sand it down and repeat the process 3-4 times. Today is a different story and time is a luxury...
Now I know it was your skill and hard work that restored but I can't also help but think some magic was involved. Was that a face on the new handle?
