I must have been about 13 at the time, but I remember spending weeks standing in the W2 garden, flipping barrows items and trying to save up for that beautiful Guthan's set with the swirly purple effects I so desperately needed to have. At this time, the whole set was around 10m, with the spear alone being the bulk of it (like 8-9m.) Fell for the leaf-bladed spear switch last second and cried for hours, to my moms confusion.

I remember when I was really new to the game and a guy wearing full rune (g) was saying armor trimming for sale. I wasn't a member and didn't know about clue scrolls at the time so I handed over my full mithril set. He trades me again and says it's now trimmed and I could clearly see it was the same armor with nothing done to it. He was asking me for like 25k for doing nothing which I didn't even have so I told him I wanted to see how it looked on me before I gave him any money. He said ok and traded it back and I x logged. I don't think he knew how the scam worked. To this day, anytime I feel dumb, I think of this guy and feel slightly less dumb.

I remember as a kid someone tried to convince me I could dupe my black armor by dropping it on the ground and pressing ALT+F4. I fell for this scam, luckily for me however I didn't actually know how to do that right, so I just typed ALT+F4 into the chat and when nothing happened, I grabbed my armor off the ground and ran away, swearing at the scammer. After that, I learned to be careful and was never scammed again.

Way back in the day, I was able to pull off trading the Black Desert Robes from The Shadow of The Storm quest off as Ahrim’s. I’m not sure why the case was, but at the time in RS2, the robes were an identical color to Ahrim’s robes, minus the chain texture from it being Barrow’s. You made them by rubbing the dark mushrooms on them from the obscure little tomb in the farthest corner of the desert at the time, they weren’t just the regular black wizard robes. However the sprite for it looked exactly the same at the time, or atleast 99% close enough to pass quickly enough if you were able to do a quickswitch in the trade window before trade notifications existed. I have never seen this mentioned in any OSRS/RS2/Classic videos regarding scamming, history, trade bugs, etc. Thought it was funny and would be worth sharing, even though I know people will always shit on me for it

I'd love to see a follow-up on some of these as well. I remember before you had grimy ranarr, grimy Guam, etc.. all herbs were "unidentified herb" with the same sprite. You used to see people identify 1 in the stack to know what the rest were so you could sell off unidentified Guam's as ranarrs for a lot more. There was another that took advantage of people wanting to dupe items using the poh. You would have say 2 whips in your inv and drop one in your own house. Trade and show the victim you have only that in your inv then use it on a table or something. Wait a couple seconds, pick it up as well as the one you dropped initially and trade again showing both items. Now you just get them to try, and since there's an animation when someone puts an item on the table, once the scammer sees that, they kick out other players and lock the house. Then you just wait for it to show up

The 1711k was the best, most consistent scam in the game pre-ge. You would find someone selling materials (sharks for example), trade them, and put in 1711k. Wait about 5 seconds while they calculate how many sharks are worth 1711k, then decline and tell them the number they probably already calculated. Then put up 1171k in the next trade. Easiest 600k of all time. Worked nearly every try.

Great video. Recording history is so important. I personally remember and will never forget: Black Armor(g) set scam: scammers would show you that armor several times when you were trying to trade them, but quickly remove it if you didn't have your money/items ready. So in that moment, when you were few miliseconds away from pressing accept and seeinmg flicker the item you want, they'd finally switch some of the items to normal Black pbody and/or Black platelegs (g) and insert some gold jewelry among them. (necklace/rings) . The problem is, a tired, young and frustrated player (from long market searching bc grand exchange didn't exist) would sometimes just hastily press Accept, seeing as they finally found a seller for the item they want. That way I lost my money I saved up for buying the Black plate (g) set, to a scammer back then.

I remember one of the more obscure scams from back in the day: the scammer giving a high level player in fancy gear half of an inventory of Limestone, and then ask the mark to smelt it on behalf of the scammer because their own smithing level is "too low". It would prompt to ask how many limestone they want to smelt, they'd typically select 'all', and then promptly blow themselves up repeatedly because that's what limestone in a furnace does. Most people aren't aware of that and get caught totally off guard or afk because smelting is generally a safe activity, and it doesn't seem like a scam since it doesn't involve giving anything away

I remember falling for the team item scam with a slight variation to the one described in the video. One guy was buying a whip for 2.4 Mill, and another guy was bying a guthix stole for 2mill. Whips were worth 1.4-1.6mill back then. I traded the guy who wanted to "buy" the whip for 2.4 mill, and he offered a gutix stole. I thought, oh, "If i accept I can sell the stole for 2mill right away to the other guy" and then buy a whip again for 600k profit and I accepted. I then went to the guy who wanted to "buy" the guthix stole for 2 mill, Who showed me the 2 mill, then declined and logged off. It took me a while trying to sell the "rare item guthix stole" before I figured out that I had been scammed, but only after I traded it for a Torag's hammer, which was worth even less back then.

So get this; back in ~2005, my cousin came up with this “brilliant” scam. The item we used was called “hallowed Reed” and it was a tradeable item you got from legends quest I believe. So, one of us would stand in the bank say “selling reed 100k” over and over. No one clearly had the item unless they did the quest and kept. We’d then leave, and then the other person would come in and say “buying hallow reed, 500k please I need it for this quest.” No joke, we had people add my friend and buy his hallow reed for 100k to then come and try and sell it to me for 500k. It didn’t work often, but we got a few fools. I’m sorry to those 3 people that 11 year old me got ya. Man, the world before grand exchange lol

Early on with the re-release of OSRS, the GE didn't exist for about a month or so as the Dev team had to bring 07 runescape back up to speed. The market was essentially the Wild West again those first couple weeks with players having to trade one another for items and no one really knew exactly what price to pay for things and the trade windows didn't yet give warnings to any offer changes. This was the golden opportunity for scammers to quickly swap items like you mentioned right before the victim clicked accept. Well, I had gotten scammed trying to buy like 100 prayer potions for 100k and the scammer swapped them for attack potions (essentially the same color). Attack potions were basically worth nothing since they're literally one of the first potions you make to start training herblore. I was so pissed as that was pretty much my entire cash stack up to that point within a couple weeks, but had a good chuckle afterward as it brought me back to the good ol' days of being so naive to fall for such a simple scam.

When I was in middle school me and some friends came up with a scam that involved charcoal. Since charcoal was slightly obscure at the time (burnt trees were only in the wildy) The person with the charcoal would ask to buy someone's rune armor/weapon. Put the charcoal up and say it's rare. Then the second guy comes in with a way better offer to buy the item to induce FOMO in the target. The target argues that they had the trade first and we'd trade the charcoal for x item and get away with it. This absolutely worked and was super scummy but in hindsight its interesting to see how psychologically affective it was.

5:33 and in 2004 2005 there was no dwarven furnace or anything of the such. The "most efficient" furnace from what I recall was in Fallador, which you'd have to bring the coal and the rune ore to make the bar. Not least to mention, there was less in game currency in existence and in circulation. So getting scammed 100k back then was like getting scammed 2 mill today.

You forgot to mention how back in the day trading was only a single screen and so quickly removing an item for trading was a serious risk. Some players would trade with me and when I put up my stuff first it'd say "player has accepted the trade" or something like that, even as a kid I knew to end it there. One legit one was free gem cutting. The players would always give me back the cut gems since they were just training crafting. It probably helped "free armor trimming" seem more legit.

I went to RuneScape to escape a really bad childhood, and I was greeted with a cyber social interaction of greed and corruption, false friendships and dirty deeds. I am so glad I turned out to be a good person in the end, RuneScape taught me not to trust others and to be skeptical. But I could easily have gone into the life of a con artist/criminal due to my experiences in the game. I know it sounds insane "it's just a game bro" but when you are developing as a person, and you valued your RuneScape life over your real one, which I sadly did, it became a quintessential part of who I was. Gaming addiction as a teenager is no joke, and I am certainly a pioneer when it comes to the effect it has on our generations mental health. I'm in my thirties now, and because of the use of psychedelic drugs, and a year of absolute insanity, I have unravelled where the problems started, and where they cartwheeled from there. Now, I am no longer a boy, hiding from the reality, of what was done to me, and what I have done to others. I am a man now, and I can no longer hide in virtual worlds, I don't want to spend another second in games or behind screens, from now on, my life is out there in the fresh air. I hope if any of you are struggling, you can find the courage in yourself to face your problems head on, instead of hiding behind pixels.

I've encountered a more clever scam back when they added GE value to the trade window. The initial deal was favorable to me showing I'll make 300k. They then closed the trade window, saying it was lag and asked to re-trade (so that the big flashing red exclamation mark wouldn't show up). Finally, they'll put up a similar-looking noted item but this time it's worth much less. However, the GE value still shows 300k difference, just to the other guy. Thankfully I did not fall for it but it made me chuckle. I think it was a wizard's hat (t) replaced with a non-trimmed wizard's hat. The trim color was black so it was hard to see the difference in a bank note.

I'll admit it, when I was 12-13 I got scammed a few times and that led me to trying to scam as well. The most successful scam I did involved "trading 1.9m for 1.8m" a free 100k for no reason. Put up 1911k, accept their 1800k once, then decline and say "too slow" or "oops." Then when they retrade put up 1191k instead of 1911k. Most people wouldn't notice the difference and you're up 600k per trade. Got trades back to back at an absurd success rate. Mentioned in the video, removing the item entirely at the last second would work best with the abyssal whip, because the second trade screen said "absolutely nothing" which oddly resembles "abyssal whip." But the richest I got wasn't even from scamming. I'm sure many of you remember the "flower game"- bet on which color flower the mithril seeds would grow. Many people did scam doing this. But I gave players 3x their bet if they won and since the odds were in my favor I didn't have to scam. House always wins. I believe we all learned valuable lessons from Runescape. Nowadays, I can smell an IRL scam from a mile away. It's better we lose pixels as children than our savings accounts as adults.

When I was a kid playing in 2005, someone got me with the secret change your password cheat. Said if I changed my password to jackpot then I'd get 400k in the bank. This was a lot to me and I excitedly changed it. Back then, your account name was the same as your login, so when I changed it and logged back in I immediately realized the error of my ways and cried. Jagex customer support did indeed exist back then though and I was able to recover my account. Still use the same one to this day, but I never forgot that dude.

Team scamming is very popular in rs3 due to so many obscure items that rarely ever gets traded. Someone goes to ge asking for someone to help him with his collection of really wierd items, usually with a very high buy limit but no supply at all, such as dead content familiar scrolls. Then the victim buys the scrolls on Ge and the scammer just made millions profit.
