I'm not a big fan of Johor Bahru, but people from my country Singapore love to go there to eat and buy stuff. What amazed me in this video is that old uncle, he spoke and understood you better than the younger people! I loved when you get to talk to the people while you’re traveling especially about the history, btw I’m the history nerd who likes to message you sometimes on IG lol I told you before I was addicted to your travel shows, also I like that you’re compassionate and honest traveler. 😊

Uou take it all in and get enrichment from anyone you can, along the way. We forget that the USA doesn’t have the history that countries like this have. Like that building from the 1500s, Angkor wat in Cambodia from 1100, it’s so interesting to think of, how that was built in those times, and what life must have been like.

that statue u saw in malacca was the statue of saint francis xavier… made in 1952.. a tree fell n broke its hand… the reason they didn’t fix it.. because some church people believe that the broken hand coincides with the story of his arm being cut off frm his corpse.. n it still bleeds.. they cut it because they believe he was a saint as when they dug his body (nine months in the ground.. the body still looks gd… 🤔)… everything was ok.. thus they decided to canonised him.. (he died somewhere in china in 1552… before that he was a jesuit missionary in malacca.. goa (india) etc… frm china his body was brought to malacca n reburied… only to b dug up again n voila.. they found his body is still intact… that’s where the idea of his sainthood came abt.. his body was later shipped to goa, india arnd 155something… bk to yr 1952… to commemorate 400th yrs of portuguese in malacca (i don’t why must they commemorate the yr u r invaded)… they made the statue n the tree decided to fall n break the statue’s hand…

The man knows his shit tho. Most of what he said is actually factually correct. Fun fact: The buildings in Malacca is all red, because the British painted them red because those Malaysian back then chewed on beetle nut and spit them all over the wall which made the originally white buildings, looks dirty and red in colour. The Brits said fuck it, lets paint them Red, so the Malacca Government painted them red ever since. The Japanese invaded Malaysia (Malaya at that time) during WW2, it was part of their Pan-Asia Co-prosperity Sphere, it wasn't prosperous at all, it sucked. Many people died cruelly at the hands of the Imperial Japanese, ANZACS too. They used bicycles to flank the British forces in Malaya and Singapore which is why it was so quick to occupy Malaya. The monument that Richard showed you, If i'm not mistaken is the Kuomintang monument, Kuomintang was a group of Chinese Nationalists in China that fled to Taiwan and established the Republic of Taiwan during the Chinese civil war, not sure what year it was Im too lazy to check. It was during the Communist revolution.
