And exactly that's why I don't see Remedy's work not just as a video game, but a true work of art. A playable piece of art if you will. You notice that in the Poet's Cinema as well, where the entire short film "Yötön Yö" or "Nightless Night", which has been teased before from Saga's second chapter, is being shown, with Sam Lake and the other cast talking Suomi / Finish. Remedy has shown once more that they're not just a video game studio but they create art. Art that can be consumed by all audience, no matter if young or old, gamers or non-gamers. I am so eager when the both DLCs will be released this year.

In the game there are only 2 band members still alive. They're now in their 90s. This scene takes place in a dream world where Alan is stuck in a tv interview. In that dream world their band mate is still alive and they all appear much younger.

That's Alan Wake's Lynchian musical moment in the game. He's going through a bit similar thing as special agent Dale Cooper does in Twin Peaks. David Lynch's grandpa was Finnish, so there's that too.

There are few games that elicit this much joy, which is even more impressive when you consider that Alan Wake II is a horror game. Thanks for doing this one. The musical itself is ridiculous, but in a good way. It's a completely unexpected event in a very dark and scary game. Most of the time you're running around in the woods of Washington State at night as an FBI agent, or trying to find a way out of the "Dark Place" as writer Alan Wake. Then all of a sudden all of the characters are performing in a musical, including Alan himself who definitely does not remember doing that. The whole game is a bit of a mind-warp and good for people who enjoy Twin Peaks or True Detective.

Gotta recommend “Children of the Elder God” ALSO made by Poets of the Fall/Old Gods of Asgard😎👍🏻 Ps: Alan Wake is a psychological horror series about a writer(Alan Wake) being trapped in a horror story he wrote/is writing, but the story is being manipulated by a dark evil force, keeping him trapped there in a neverending cycle of trying to escape. This musical number is part of a section that is intended to give a simplified version of his backstory while also providing a moment of craziness to give the PLAYER a moment to take a break from the scary stuff🌀

The OG Poets started with the three of them, Marko and Olie (the guitarist) are best friend and Markus came in after in the early 2000 ish. The other 3 came later late in. Also Marko, Olie and Markus are playing characters in the game as Odin, Baldr and Loki, Next to Angers Remorse and Dark Ocean Summoning + The Sea of The Night for the game.

So ... context? Alan Wake is stuck in a pocket dimension called "The Dark Place" and is trying to find his way out through his writing. Each attempt starts at the talk show, and he usually learns something about his situation from it. 'Herald of Darkness' is a recap of the first game, 'Alan Wake' by Remedy Studios. For the most part, the Alan you see singing and dancing his parts is from further along on the spiral of his journey, while the Alan at the beginning and end really has no clue what's going on. Poets of the Fall is a 6-person band, but in the backstory, the Old Gods of Asgard used to be a 4-person band (Tor and Odin, Baldur, and Loki), but Loki vanished and Baldur died of a heart attack. However, whenever Tor and Odin Anderson play, they summon the spirit of Baldur who plays along with them. There's a really cool scene at the end of the game where the aged rockers perform 'Dark Ocean Summoning' and younger versions of themselves (the Poets, along with Baldur) appear in the sky behind them.

So, yeah. Alan Wake 2 is a Psychological Survival Horror game. Out of context this video is pretty hilarious. But, in the context of the game, it's a exposition dump and also the dark presence/dark place basically fucking with Alan's mind and showing him that he has no contril over what's happening. I really strongly recommend you check out Dark Ocean Summoning from the game. Fucking killer song, and it plays while you're having to obliterate Taken left and right while trying to summon Alan out of the Dark Place. The Old Gods are specifically playing this to summon him. So fucking cool. The power of Rock'n'Roll.

I interpreted the scene that this happened DESPITE the dark place. Like, Alan has been there alone constantly writing for 13 years, suddenly Mr. Door AND the Old Gods of Asgard are there. He finally isn't alone and they are cheering him along. They are a glimpse that he'll finally be able to escape the darkplace.

It really is a fun series for the story alone. So many layers going on. Alan Wake 2 specifically is one of the best examples of Video Games as an art form, not just entertainment. BUT Alan Wake has so much stuff going on that it almost deserves multiple playthroughs and while the first game is pretty easy, can be a little confusing to play. Alan Wake 2 is less confusing to play, but it is using mechanics already familiar to its genre so it might not be the best to get into. (that said I play on medium difficulties and there IS an option that keeps the gameplay very easy so you can engage in the story. No shame in going easy) likewise, if you don't already have a videogame console on a REALLY EXPENSIVE computer (my $800ish PC from 2020 struggles with Alan Wake 2) then don't spend your money on that. The game is also digital only, so you can't walk into a store to buy it if you have a console. This might be my favorite game from this year, but, if you're not already invested in games, don't go and buy a console just for this stuff. (Even though I don't recommend it, if you all REALLY want, the cheapest way to go about it would be to buy a Xbox Series S. It is the cheapest current-gen console, it is digital only so no discs, graphics are toned down because it is a "budget" console, but Alan Wake Remastered and Alan Wake 2 are digital only so discs are a non-issue regardless. Also Alan Wake's American Nightmare is only available on PC and Xbox anyway. it was never moved to current consoles, but the Xbox can still play it.) Again DON'T RECOMMEND BUYING A CONSOLE JUST FOR THESE. I'm just leaving this in case you all do, or someone else wants to. Sorry for the essay. I'm a writer and I have to gush about a series about a writer.)

You should play the game, of course! If you own the proper console. It's a mix of media, part video game, part movie, and it's compareably easy for new gamers to play through. Recommend playing the first game though. The story is really engaging, I love it! You also should react to the other Old Gods songs in Alan Wake 2, like Angers Remorse or Dark Ocean Summoning. They effing rock

Remedy (the company that makes the games) is great at telling stories. Some of most of their games can be pretty difficult, but there are plenty of lets plays (people playing the games, some will talk over it, others won't so people can just experience the game) on KZread that it could be fun for you guys to watch if you wanted to. Either way you decide, my personal recommendation for order would be Alan Wake (the original), Alan Wake American Nightmare, Quantum Break, Control, and then Alan Wake 2. Every game intertwines with the others in multiple ways, and while it isn't necessary to play all of them to follow the story, you will pick up on things that you wouldn't if you didn't play those games. Control, for example, has an entire DLC about Alan Wake. Glad y'all are enjoyin it, for story focused games there really isn't any better studio than Remedy if you ask me.

I love the Poets, BUT, I really do wish they'd do more music like they did for Remedy. A lot of what they've done for these games as the Old Gods has a lot of shades of prog-rock with constant changes and switching between parts. The Poet and the Muse and Take Control are both really great multi-part songs with breaks and changes throughout. Take Control is especially like that in the game itself but sadly the released version is more of a straight rocker, with much cut out, like they'd made a single version of the song. They're so good at it that I would seriously love to see the Poets sit down and work out a proggy concept album some day.
